Canada Introduces Category-Based Selection in Express Entry System for Economic Immigration

Today, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced a ground breaking development in Canada's flagship economic immigration management system, Express Entry. For the first time ever, category-based selection will be introduced to facilitate the issuance of invitations to apply for prospective permanent residents with specific skills, training, or language proficiency. Additional information regarding the timing of invitations for individual categories and the application process will be disclosed in the upcoming weeks.
This year, category-based selection will primarily focus on inviting candidates who exhibit strong French language proficiency, or possess work experience in key sectors, including healthcare, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics professions, trades such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors, transportation, as well as agriculture and agri-food industries. By prioritizing the invitation of skilled professionals in these fields, category-based selection supports Canada's commitment to welcoming high-demand individuals into communities throughout the country. Moreover, the Government of Canada's emphasis on Francophone immigration ensures that French-speaking communities can continue to thrive in Canada and exercise their language rights.
