We’ve looked at the Canadian government's plan to operate the Airbus A330 MRTT in articles on our website. But, over the past few months, much more information has been released. The aircraft type has a Canadian military designation, more jets have been ordered, and the government has also given the media a tour of the interior of the new aircraft in its interim configuration. This video will explore the latest news regarding Canada's new Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft.

It was long overdue. The A330 was probably the best choice for the RCAF, made even better that the type is operated by many allies and the plane is still in production. A far cry from the former A310s that started out with the former Canadian airline WardAir.
@AirShark95

Also helps that former RCAF pilots operating AC or TS A330s can still serve in a reservist role due to the commonality between the types.

The A310s were originally purchased by Wardair They became ppart of Canadian Airlines after it boughtWardair. when CP needed help, the government publicly refused to bail CP out but behind the scenes , purchased the 310s to be given to military and theybwere renamed to make it less onvious where they came from. I suspect the government was hoping to get Air Transat’s 330s but when AC pulled out of purchase agreement, government had to start looking elsewhere for 330s. (hence delay).

@michaeldunham3385 True, but aging jets parked outside still have the ordinary corrosion issues. The A330 has a lot of brackets holding wing to body fairings that tend to corrode badly and Airbus is a bad parts supplier. It usually ends up with MROs making their own brackets, while Airbus takes multiple days to certify them based on information from an e-mail.

For those wondering why the RCAF didn't go with the A330neo it's because 1) the RCAF operates on a shoestring budged, so second hand A332s is all it could realistically afford, and 2) the A330neo MRTT isn't even certified yet and only exists on paper.

Out of all of the money our government spends/wastes, why in the world can we just not purchase new aircraft for our military/dignitaries? Sometimes I think as Canadians we feel like we are too small of a country to have the latest and greatest equipment for our military. WE ARE CANADA and it's time we shown the world who we are, what we stand for and what we can do! Canadians in general have a "roll up your sleeves and getter done" attitude when it comes to doing work and it's time we show the world who we are and what we can do!

The problem is political optics. If our PM bought brand new planes to use as VIP transport, the Conservative opposition would pounce on that as a luxury for the PM. Just like how the PM's residence needs to be renovated or razed, but the Conservatives cry foul that the PM is spending money frivolously. This is the problem with Canada. Canadians who don't like the PM would jump all over that even though by the time the PM's residence, these planes and most other capital purchases are realized this PM will have been retired.

The ideal aircraft should separate MRTT from true dedicated VVIP aircraft, maybe one day just 2 A330MRTT not enough due to resource allocation between strategic airlift and aerial refueling and VVIP transport. In this regard, Canada shall and should rebid VVIP aircraft contract, separate from those A330s, and maybe a second hand B747-8i or brand new B787 VIP would be necessary. Maybe this should be dubbed as VCC-200, in the way VC aircraft naming does for VVIP transport does (eg. VC-25), and add some A321XLR modified for narrow body Air Force One type in case bigger ones cannot be accommodated in some airports and airfields.

@@alpearson9158 I do have a brain. The a330 burns significantly more fuel and emits significantly more CO2 than the A310 it's replacing. But please turn your thermostat down. You're killing the planet.

@@153eddy We expect our PM to fly to conferences and to go one trade missions. He requires a plane to do that. So he is wrong.

All so our PM can spew carbon at will while we are taxed to death at the gas pumps. All from the do as I say but not as I do Prime Minister. The aircraft is nice but the premise that a PM can do all kinds of carbon emission while pointing out that we can't do the same thing is simply wrong. In his mind he is good and his carbon is special while our carbon is dirty and bad. Soon a new Prime Minister will get to fly in this jet.
