The overwhelming majority of Canadians view China in old-fashioned stereotypical ways - poor, low value labour and constantly stealing IP. Their views on Mexico aren't much better. I'm shocked how out-of-touch my compatriots are. For an educated country that should know better, it's quite embarrassing. We are about to suffer a significant economic shock brought about by Trump and his bullying ways. Thanks Kevin. I live in México, Tijuana to be specific. The amount of Chinese cars ( brands) has grown exponentially in the last 5 yrs. None of those cars go to the U.S. they are consumed internally. American brands are shrinking here. I used to import goods from the U.S. 15 yrs ago, many of them were made in China. Now Mexican importers and manufacturers have become very competitive, reliable and affordable, better than the suppliers I had in the U.S. They supply and transform Chinese products as well, but without the excessive prices and poor customer service. Why is that wrong? Isn't that what free markets are all about? Isn't that what the U.S. and Canada asked us to do more than 30 yrs ago when México entered NAFTA? What about all the years and business closed that took us to become competitive? The U.S. and Canada were in such an advantageous position back then. Now open markets do not work... apparently.

Canada and Canadians think that their 40 million population is too much, despite having the biggest land mass and enormous resources. Despite having all the resources in terms of land and wood, Canadian home prices are highest in the world, and it shows how much the economy is financialized. Canada is just an outpost of the USA. They don't have any independent foreign policy or trade policy. If you want a template on how to be a successful oligarchy and monopoly, you can take it directly from Canada.

Canadian home prices are basic supply and demand. Canada has plenty of land, but doesn't build much, while importing literally millions of Indian and other foreign nationals. Everybody needs a place to stay, so housing demand skyrocketed and so did price. If Canada were to better manage immigration, the housing issue might not be so bad. Note that this will be the same in Australia and UK, as they bring in more and more immigrants. Great for homeowner investors, though.

In Canada, our problem with Mexico has a lot less to do with 'trade' and much more to do with 'auto industry' protection. We also fear American trade retaliations. Ontario is next door to Michigan, an auto industry nexus. While Alberta wants to hold onto to its oil ties with Texas. That said, Mexico has only a few options, one of which is to become closer to China -- along with the rest of the world who want cheaper EV cars and climate-friendly investments.

@@fannyalbi9040 Well, Canada is not a super power. You mean like China, US, or other nuclear powered country. That said, I hope Modi keeps things chugging along. If super power is what you want, perhaps Modi can start a war? Maybe India can join the US in sharing the fun. Good luck.

Irónico, no creén??

As an ex-American in Mexico, Canadians come down here in droves in winter and can easily be shut out of that option if Mexico deems them more trouble than they are worth. Matter of fact, the prices they pay for real estate are so high, removing their demand from the economy will bring downward pressure on Mexican inflation. Anything reducing inflation here helps the working class and expats of other countries who also winter here.

Canada is afraid of the USA cancelling NAFTA. I think what many USA/Canaga policians are ignoring is that while their middle classes are shrinking, that class is growing in China and their average energy consumption per capita is rising to similar levels to the middle classes in developed countries. The middle classes will command a lot of buying power so it would be a poor investment to bet on USA/Canada middle classes... since their governments are doing nothing to slow the shrinking of the middle classes.

Very interesting. I didn't realize that 74% of all mining exploration concessions in Mexico were from Canadian companies. You also make an excellent point that Mexico will be more inclined to trade as equal partners with the global majority as opposed to helping Premier Ford win votes from auto workers in Ontario. I think trade restrictions usually have negative consequences. Being home to one of the largest subnational economies in North America, Ontario would have better ways to be competitive than to opt for trade restrictions.
