As a Canadian, I think it's fair to say that overall your message is wasted on Canada. The overwhelming majority of Canadians view China in old-fashioned stereotypical ways - poor, low value labour and constantly stealing IP. Their views on Mexico aren't much better. I'm shocked how out-of-touch my compatriots are. For an educated country that should know better, it's quite embarrassing. We are about to suffer a significant economic shock brought about by Trump and his bullying ways. We've thoroughly antagonized China, India and Russia among others and we are now going to pay a heavy price for being so beholden to the USA. Maybe we'll learn something from it!

Thanks Kevin. I live in México, Tijuana to be specific. The amount of Chinese cars ( brands) has grown exponentially in the last 5 yrs. None of those cars go to the U.S. they are consumed internally. American brands are shrinking here. I used to import goods from the U.S. 15 yrs ago, many of them were made in China. Now Mexican importers and manufacturers have become very competitive, reliable and affordable, better than the suppliers I had in the U.S. They supply and transform Chinese products as well, but without the excessive prices and poor customer service. Why is that wrong? Isn't that what free markets are all about? Isn't that what the U.S. and Canada asked us to do more than 30 yrs ago when México entered NAFTA? What about all the years and business closed that took us to become competitive? The U.S. and Canada were in such an advantageous position back then. Now open markets do not work... apparently.

Canada and Canadians think that their 40 million population is too much, despite having the biggest land mass and enormous resources. Despite having all the resources in terms of land and wood, Canadian home prices are highest in the world, and it shows how much the economy is financialized. Canada is just an outpost of the USA. They don't have any independent foreign policy or trade policy. If you want a template on how to be a successful oligarchy and monopoly, you can take it directly from Canada.

Canadian home prices are basic supply and demand. Canada has plenty of land, but doesn't build much, while importing literally millions of Indian and other foreign nationals. Everybody needs a place to stay, so housing demand skyrocketed and so did price. If Canada were to better manage immigration, the housing issue might not be so bad. Note that this will be the same in Australia and UK, as they bring in more and more immigrants. Great for homeowner investors, though.

@@ZweiZwolf that is a conservative talking point with no basis in reality. Migrants aren't to blame for skyrocketing housing costs, banks and private equity buying up all the real estate to keep demand artificially high and thus spiking rent and mortgage costs is the reason.

China is, where possible, simply removing excuses. The best way to stop a bully is to NOT fight them, but for a large group to ask WHY they're fighting, and only THEN say STOP! If they still make noise, leave (As a group) That's what is happening.

China doesn't need to impose taxes when it's easy enough to simply ask people to stop importing overpriced Western goods when Chinese goods are objectively better and more affordable. China should be banning import of Western goods that go against Chinese national interests, such as gasoline automobiles and other carbon polluters.

The US is not going to beat or even deter China. It can move its factories anywhere and import most of the parts from China. At the same time, 120 countries do 1/3rd of their export/import trade with China, so are highly motivated to open up completely to China (and not the US). Who do you think is going to win this trade war, guys? I expect the size of the Chinese economy (in PPP) will be twice the size of the US in 6 to 8 years or less. America has to sit down and seriously do some longterm planning.

In Canada, our problem with Mexico has a lot less to do with 'trade' and much more to do with 'auto industry' protection. We also fear American trade retaliations. Ontario is next door to Michigan, an auto industry nexus. While Alberta wants to hold onto to its oil ties with Texas. That said, Mexico has only a few options, one of which is to become closer to China -- along with the rest of the world who want cheaper EV cars and climate-friendly investments.

Irónico, no creén??

As an ex-American in Mexico, Canadians come down here in droves in winter and can easily be shut out of that option if Mexico deems them more trouble than they are worth. Matter of fact, the prices they pay for real estate are so high, removing their demand from the economy will bring downward pressure on Mexican inflation. Anything reducing inflation here helps the working class and expats of other countries who also winter here.

Canada is afraid of the USA cancelling NAFTA. I think what many USA/Canaga policians are ignoring is that while their middle classes are shrinking, that class is growing in China and their average energy consumption per capita is rising to similar levels to the middle classes in developed countries. The middle classes will command a lot of buying power so it would be a poor investment to bet on USA/Canada middle classes... since their governments are doing nothing to slow the shrinking of the middle classes.

Very interesting. I didn't realize that 74% of all mining exploration concessions in Mexico were from Canadian companies. You also make an excellent point that Mexico will be more inclined to trade as equal partners with the global majority as opposed to helping Premier Ford win votes from auto workers in Ontario. I think trade restrictions usually have negative consequences. Being home to one of the largest subnational economies in North America, Ontario would have better ways to be competitive than to opt for trade restrictions.
