The coaching for our second half was somewhat cynical but most of all reassuring. The sense I got is that the whole strategy for the second half was I. Use that they are down to 10 to make sure we keep the tie, since Peru beating Argentina was statistically borderline impossible. II. Make sure we don't give the ref an excuse to ''balance things out'', as there was warning signs that this might be how he was thinking. III. Push to get the win. In that order. Was it pretty or glorious? No, but against Chile the task was to lock our spot in the knockout stage and that job got done. Considering the main fear with Marsch was that he was stubborn and unwilling to adapt the fact he was willing to tailor the game to EXACTLY the situation we were facing at that point is reassuring IMO.

Something I haven’t heard anyone discuss but would be interested in knowing is the financial impact of drawing with Chile and moving on to the next stage. Each team gets around $2 million USD for being in the Copa. Teams that reach the quarterfinals receive another $2 million. For Canada, the team also is able to stay together for another week and train around Marsch. How will the $$ impact the team and Canada Soccer forward? An extra $2 million has to be impactful. JJD - do you have any knowledge into the financial benefits of their success?

Yes, this is the time to roll out the 4-2-3-1. It could well be that Kone will gain a lot more confidence from having Osorio in there as well. And my goodness, imagine if we can actually have David up where he can score tap ins like he's so good at. Let's see it!!

Not sure why beating Venezuela should be considered a monumental effort. There's only 4 teams in CONMEBOL that are perennially formidable: Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia. The remaining 6 are average or weak. It's been that way for a very long time. Exception is that Chile had a short run above Colombia for a few years. Venezuela has always been in the bottom 2, along with Bolivia. So regardless of whether its the 20th century or the 21st century, Canada has always had a chance against Venezuela. IF indeed this is now Canada's golden generation with stars playing in many big leagues and a top tier manager, Canada should be winning this match. Except for Adekugbe, Canada had - and continues to have - their top 30+ players to choose from. No injuries or suspensions. We should be scoring 2 or 3 goals against Venezuela and conceding no more than 1. Also remember that Venezuela is only on top of Group B because they too got to play against a 10 man Ecuador, AND against a mediocre Mexico and Jamaica. Bottom line is that this bracket set up is a gift for Canada to come 4th in a Copa America, and maybe even 2nd if Ecuador upsets Argentina - which is not improbable, especially if Messi is not 100%.

Because the best ever Canada could not win to one of the worst Chile in decades, while playing with 1 more player for 70 minutes... This same Venezuela won Chile 3-0. It is possible though, just like happened with Chile. A penalty, a deflection, another red card, Venezuela hitting the posts, etc. Soccer is defined by thin margins.
@djknox24 ай бұрын
@@kkita4all Sorry but Conmebol teams, other than the perennial top 3 or 4 squads, are no longer better than CONCACAF top 6. Watch how Panama takes down Bolivia tonight. Canada is currently not playing up to it's potential, so the Venezuela match will be tight. in two years however, Canada will comfortably defeat and of the bottom half squads of Conmebol. Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Paraguay are all average teams, and probably Ecuador too.

I've said it coming into the tournament and will continue to say it. There needs to be high expectations for this team. I'm disappointed that the soccer heads in this country aren't raising the bar for the team. The talent level on this team is high enough that I expected them to get out of the group. Did I think it was going to be easy, no but these are teams that we can get results from. I look at Venezuela no different that Peru or Chile. They are good team and should be respected, they can beat us but they ARE NOT unbeatable. Canada does need to finish the chances they get. These are quality teams and you aren't going to get dozens of chances, you need to make the most of them. It didn't count but Oluwaseyi's finish is exactly the kind of thing this team needs.
@grantcameron1944 ай бұрын
I like your analysis Josh. Often I think it’s better than the experts on One Soccer. I think a lot depends on how Canada and Venezuela match up in tactics and individual players. I haven’t heard too much talk about that. Based on the highlights I noticed that Jamaica really took it to them. I see Canada as a Jamaica with stronger defense. I think Canada may score a goal or two based on that.

The problem with Canada’s attack is that both Larin and David are hold up type of strikers. Therefore when played together they can’t take advantage of one of them holding the play up and the other making a run or trying to connect passes with one another.
@jrcanuck14 ай бұрын
Josh, sorry; but I totally disagree with you. Shafflelburg played a very good game vs Chile & now that Buchanan is hurt, he will definitely start again. You are also totally undervalueing Larin's contribution to this team. He has brought experience & a very strong defensive game & he made a wonderful pass to set-up the only goal scored. Don't mess with a good thing. You have been pushing all along not to start Larin & again sorry; but you have been wrong about this. Larin will start again! I actually had faith in this teSm & predicted that Canada would make the quarterfinals. The offense needs to adjust to Marsch's new system; but that will come, as the talent is there.
