It will soon be acceptable to have long hair, face tattoos, and beards in the CAF. As Mark Neufeld reports, the decision to was made to keep the military in step with the culture and society it protects.

Remember this is also so you can get a full seal on your face mask when you have to put on the gas masks. The long hair & long finger nails... will get in the way & cause infections & harder to fight hand to hand. As long as the nails & hair aren't too long... I can see that being fine. As for the facial hair... in combat they usually allow grow out... so as long as they have it kept neat, tidy & possibly hold the same standards as the British for their facial hair rules... I don't see much of an issue. Other than Gas mask getting a full seal. But day to day it would be fine. But this all seeming more like a joke. They got rid of a whole bunch of capable, well trained soldiers because they wouldn't get the stick... Now they have to resort to this to get recruits. The funky hair and not shaving it... for basic training is an issue. They should at least make it so they have to trim it & still have to get a haircut... Basic training is about breaking you down... to build hou back up & preparing for the thick of the job... where the enemy doesn't care about your feelings, and you need to push yourself further than you ever thought you were able to with your body... just to survive or complete a mission.

I remember a recruiter coming to my high school back in the 70's and then we guys wore our hair long. I asked the officer why the army didn't allow longer hair. His response was two things I remember. One is hygiene, hair is great to hold dirt and will help infect a wound. Secondly, hand to hand combat. The reason hair was short and visible tatoos were not permitted and the uniforms could not be altered was for unit cohesion. All these changes are trumpeted as recognising people's individuality, but thats just the problem, the military is supposed to be all about group dynamics and reducing individuality. We learned over centuries of warfare that troops need to carr more about their unit and the soldier next to them then themselves. the whole point of wearing the uniform is conformity which builds teamwork. Without teamwork you have no military, just a bunch of individuals, not soldiers. Will this only affect the physical appearance or is there an even deeper mood here? Will this also affect how the soldiers are trained? If your individual needs are placed above the others, above the training, above the unit as a whole, what repercussions will this inevitably bring? How far is the military willing to go to ensure every single soldier is happy? If you decide to join the military, you do as the military does. You can express yourself on your time off.

@@winstonfc Add to that under discretion of the commanding officer. The clip is definitely misleading as it did not state whether full research was done by DND's policymakers on a number of militaries around the world to see if hair length, color, facial beard, tattoos have an affect on operations. I mentioned soldiers and officers of Maori descent serving in the New Zealand Defence Force because tattoos are part of their cultural identity and have no effect on their performance. And our indigenous peoples and Sikh's serving in our military who do have long hair, again no effect on their performance (the latter wrapped in a turban conforming to regulations that can be found on publicly accessible CANFORGEN documents). In the past French sappeurs sported long beards as part of their military culture but not sure if the tradition continues (I like for someone in the French military, whether active or retired to confirm this/j'invite quelqu'un dans la militaire française pour confirmer ce fait, soit qu' actif ou non).

@@quietprofessional Thank-you for your nuanced and informative reply. I think many people are imagining only tip-of-the-spear soliders, regular infantry, on a deployment with rainbow coloured hair and prison tattoos. Just because they can, does not mean they will, barring operational restrictions. I suspect you'll see these changes reflected primarily in purple trades, where it really does not matter, and that the changes will be mostly unnoticeable. I agree that they should have been more transparent about the policy conditions, as well as the research which justified the change, besides retention. But I am fairly certain this will pose no problem to the effectiveness the CAF.

Visible tattoos on CAF members has been allowed for a long time. I’ve been in the Army for 12 years now and have had my hands and complete neck tattooed since recruitment. The face is obviously the new reg.
