Critical comment affirms that Michael Kamen's "Quintet" is valued as the most important new work for Brass Quintet in the last 40 years, having become a "standard" work for Brass worldwide.
Classically trained Juilliard graduate Michael Kamen, of "Robin Hood" and "Mr. Holland's Opus" fame, composed this piece for Canadian Brass.
Canadian Brass would like to thank FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings) for their assistance on this album.

Some people don't realize the dedication it takes to play this well... It is literally a lifelong devotion and dedication. This isn't just some side-hobby for them, it is literally their life. I get a little depressed to know that even though I am a pretty talented player, I can never get as good as any professional because I chose a different path for my life. Thank you for this, CB...

Kingwut117 Do not be depressed. We all make our choices. I too selected another path. Music is not there strictly to be mastered, but to be enjoyed, Enjoyed the experience music has brought you and strive to be the best whatever you have chosen to be.

I play in a very good quintet, not quite of this caliber, but still a group of great players. I’m the lone non-professional in the group. At the end of the day we smash brass tubes into our face, blow, and try to male them sound pretty. We do it to communicate and to excite. Focus on that and you will find joy in music.

Hey, been there felt that. I think you can get 80% of the pleasure from 20% of the work these professionals probably put in. Just find a group (maybe the hardest part), practice regularly, and enjoy making music together. I hope you find fulfillment on the path you chose!

i think that although Canadian brass is one of my hugest inspirations, and many other peoples as well, that you may have chosen a different life path, but have fun! play on the side and enjoy! that's truly the only way to get better is to like what you are doing

Played this with my quintet during my senior year of high school as the closer to our last concert. As a French Horn player, I couldn't have asked for any better last piece--any better last note--to play in high school. Now in college as a non-music major, although I still am in music groups, I'm still wishing I could have more moments like this.

Ralph, certainly you've passed along a great deal of your knowledge to so many in music. Thank you for that. I did have the opportunity to perform this last summer at the Humboldt State University Brass Chamber Music Workshop with some excellent musicians, from college age to those of us that have played for years. A beautiful piece.

I played this. I was so honored to play it, we played it for a memorial service for our friend that passed away this year. The trick is to have emotion. Let the music guide you, and watch. Our quintet played it without a conductor, because we conveyed parts through movement.

If you like this music (and who would not?) there is a wonderful rendering of it for concert band. After conducting it many times with my band last summer, I thought about doing it with my brass group at church. A fresh listen to the original brass version changed my mind: As beautiful as this is, I feel it pales in comparison to the version with the full colors of the wind band. Check it out, it is a glorious piece to conduct!

I listened to this once and immediately bought the music (legitimately of course). I hope that my sons, my grandson (trombone) and I can play this. It's beautiful with a touch of sadness. Perhaps the sadness comes through from the players, having commissioned the piece and then having the composer pass away? In any case, simply gorgeous.

I grew up appreciating brass music: My mother played cornet in high school, and I played trombone. As a composer, I loved to write for trombone and brass ensembles. (Some of my music is available online at MusicaNeo.) This piece by Canadian Brass is a glorious performance of majestic music in the amazing outdoors. I cannot help but wonder, however, if it was performed outdoors or dubbed in a studio with a track of geese overlaid at the end, due to the reverberation.
