Question of the Day: Please tell me something interesting about the money in your county. (For example: What is the name of your currency? Do you have any special names for your coins like we do in Canada? Who/ what is on the heads and tails side of your coins? What / who is on the banknotes in your country? ) I look forward to learning a bit about your country's currency. 💸
@MrMAIRENEE4 жыл бұрын
I'm from the Dominican Republic, the name of our currency is the Peso (Dominican Peso, DOP), we do not have cents coins. We have one, five, ten, and twenty-five peso coins. We also have 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 2000 peso banknotes, each denomination with a different color. We had a twenty-peso banknote that was made of polymer, but since the others were made of paper, the twenty-peso one would take the rest out of your pocket, it was very funny until you lost your money on the street, that's why they stopped doing them.
@JeNsJyugyou4 жыл бұрын
@@MrMAIRENEE That's very interesting! 🤗 Thank you so much for sharing about money in the Dominican Republic. 🇩🇴 I am very surprised that they made a 20 peso banknote while there is a 25 peso coin. I've never heard of a country having one of their coins be more valuable than one of their banknotes. 😄 Also sorry to hear that people lost money due to having one polymer banknote while the rest were still paper. I hope that didn't happen to you personally. 💸 I am curious though as to why they stopped making the polymer banknote and just continue with paper banknotes...wouldn't it make more sense to convert all banknotes to polymer since polymer banknotes last longer and are more secure (so in the long run it would save the government more money) ? 🤔

What I love about the Loonie is that the general public named the dollar coin , not the government. When it was first introduced, there were a lot of protests about replacing the dollar bill by a coin; people called it a loony(crazy) idea and started to. call the coin a Loony. The nickname stuck, and the name Loonie was then officially given to the coin.

Hi, Jen. Thank you so much for your excellent work making this video for us. Many different aspects of Canada are shown on each bill and coin: some of its main historic events (national and international), its nature, and its contribution to science. I think the most beautiful bill is the five-dollar bill because of the image of the five great lakes seen from space.
@anothersquid3 жыл бұрын
"Nickels" are so called because they used to be made of nickel, until it started to cost more than 5 cents to make one, and the metal was changed to steel. And remember the front of the coin is "heads" and the back is "tails" If you look through the little translucent maple leaf at a point source of light - sunlight reflecting off a round surface, or a little christmas light, if you look through there or shine a laser through it, it will have the value of the bill (5, 10, 20, etc.) that you can see (or project if you used a laser).

@@catherineramsey5375 Prior to 1968, Canadian 10c and 25c pieces were made of silver as well. 1c pieces actually contained copper until 1996... 98% copper from 1942-1996, after which they were turned into slugs, like all circulation coins in Canada today.

Thank you for your informative and interesting video, it helps to know more things about canadian everyday life as well as learning English! I have a question, I'm sorry if you already explained that in one of your videos, but apparently in Canada when you go to the supermarket taxes are not indicated on the price of the product. So how do you do to predict what exact price you are going to pay for at the end ? Do the taxes depend on the province or territory, how do you do if you don't have your cellphone to calculate if you have several products ? Doesn't seem easy ^^
@JeNsJyugyou4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and interesting question, Abby 🤩. You're right, when you are shopping in Canada, the price if the item doesn't include tax. I am terrible at math and can rarely predict the exact price I'll need to pay for an item. It isn't easy to figure out. I'm not sure about all of Canada, but in Ontario we used to have two types of taxes when paying for items. We had GST (Goods and Services Tax) and PST (Provincial Sales Tax). But now for the most part since 2010, the taxes are now combined into one tax called HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) which is + 13%. In addition, not everywhere in Canada is the same. Our provinces and territories have different tax rates when purchasing items which range from 5% - 15%. 🇨🇦 I hope that helps. 🤗

Bitcoin is the future of Crypto and the question traders ask themselves now is if this is Right time to invest ? Before jumping into conclusion I think you should take a look at things first . For the past few days the price of BTC has been fluctuating which means the market is currently unstable and you can't tell if it's going to bearish or bullish . While others still continue to trade without the fear of making lose , others are been patient . it all depends on the pattern with which you trade and also the source of your strategy .

The only times I have seen the golden-colored dollar coins (showing Sakagawea) in the USA have been at coin-operated laundries. I showed them to my mother and she was amazed, having never seen them before. If I use them at a store here, I always point out to the cashier that I am using dollar coins, because I don't want them to be mistaken for quarters. When I was in Canada the "loonies" were commonplace, though.

With plastic bank notes in Canada now, I'd love to see them return to a one dollar bill. True, we don't use cash that much anymore, but when you do, it's a lot easier to carry a bunch of one dollar bills versus coins, especially if you're a guy since you won't have a purse or a wallet with a coin purse attached. Keeping coins rattling around in your pocket is annoying and quite often they can fall out.

In Kenya we have shillings. 0.50, 1,5,10,20, 40 in silver, gold or a combination colour coins. The rest, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 are in notes with colours very close to your currency. One Canadian Dollar is about 90 KSH. The twenty shilling coin used to be a note but now it is a gold coloured coin. We call it a Pound in slang, somehow this is connected to the British Pound (during colonial period). A hundred is known as a red, not sure why because it is purple in colour😀

In Romania we have paper money called "leu" which translates to the word "lion". Compared to most other currencies, the Romanian leu is pretty weak (about 4.5 Romanian lei in 1 US dollar), so our coins are pretty insignificant. We have a lot of different banknotes such as 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 (I think I've seen 300 and 500 once. Those are rare). Just like Canadian banknotes, ours are also made of polymer and have semi-translucent shapes. The faces on the Romanian lei ("lei" is plural for "leu") are of famous Romanian writers from the past. 😊🇷🇴

A few of the Canadian notes resemble the colors of some of the notes here in Barbados..also note that Canadian money can be changed at the banks here.some businesses also accept Canadian dollars,so anyone visiting Barbados can travel with Canadian money.

Hi Julian 😎. Thanks for sharing about money in Barbados ☺️. I am surprised to hear that Canadian money can be used so easily in your country. When travelling, many places accept American money, but it is exciting to hear that Canadian money can be just as good in Barbados 🇧🇧 🇨🇦👍🏻.

I found out on one of my visits to Canada that the polymer banknotes will tear if not handled properly--so be careful. Also I was intrigued by a coin celebrating First Nations culture, that there was pigment on the coin--similar to the poppy coin that was shown in this video. I traveled across the prairie provinces, and especially enjoyed the cities and towns there. I know that many people wouldn't agree that they are fascinating, but I really liked that part of Canada.
