It is great to be able to 'travel the world' without leaving my country. When people immigrate to Canada, they bring something from their culture and add it to Canada's culture. I also enjoy the freedom that we have to be true to ourselves and be able to express ourselves how we wish. What do you love about my country?

It looks like everything and everyone is saying to you "Just give'er!" or "Be calm and enjoy your short life!" Someone should have lived in a crowded, noisy city with everyday kerfuffle, then s/he would had clean eyes to see mellow and real life in Canadian cities.

When I came to Canada, first thing that makes me happy it was how Canadian people are polite. Every one says thanks or sorry with out no reasson. If you want to get in somewhere the person in your front holding the door and he is welcoming to you to get in to.I love Canada.

Thanks for your comment. A few of the words I didn't realize were slang either until I was teaching English in Japan and spoke with native speakers from other countries, and they looked at me like I had two heads. 😆 (However, I did the same with my Australian friends in Japan too sometimes) 😅

I was just telling my daughter that the hoodie she was wearing today is called a bunny hug. She loves that slang and will use it all the time now. My favorite thing about Canada is how unified, polite and peaceful we are as a people! I couldn't be prouder to be a Canadian!!

Was talking with an American at one point, and he was confused as to why I would use the word "Canuk". He said in America, that's a derogatory word for a Canadian. Lol I laughed. I said, "It's ok, Yankee."

As a Canadian I love everything about Canada, especially multiculturalism, universal healthcare, and how clean, well maintained and orderly most every place and thing is. There are plenty more things you could still add yet. Especially when you get in to more regional expressions. There is poutine, b’y, how’s she goin’, fish plastic, how are ya now, caper, iron cow, and others.

Tim Hortons is my favorite thing about Canada. Anytime I visit, I search out a Timmies, and because there's one on every other corner, they aren't hard to find. I love Timmies coffee. Starbucks sucks by comparison!

My favorite thing about Canada? That's a difficult question to answer because I like many things about Canada! I like the beautiful land, the kind people, great fishing, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Paul Bunyan's French-Canadian heritage, and last but not least, the use of "eh" in everyday conversation. I'm American. I found your videos trying to teach my kids about money outside the US. We call soft drinks in Colorado, pop too. But I've heard soda in other places. In New Mexico people call it a Coke, no matter the brand. I'm from the Southwest, so the South, East, Midwest and West have regional dialects and accents that differ from where I am. All the rest was intriguing to watch. I learned a lot.

I've noticed a lot of Canucks say beauty and sketchy. It seems beauty is something good or a good situation, and sketchy is something bad or a questionable situation. "That looks sketchy, eh?"

One of my favorite things about Canada is your videos. Even though I have been Canadian all my life I learn new things from your videos. I have never heard the slang for Toronto or the term just give’er. I agree the scenery, the wildlife and the multiculturalism are some of our best features. People who live here and people who visit should spend some time in the National Parks to really enjoy the country.

Haha, thanks so much for your comment! I'm glad you enjoy my videos. In addition to The Six, other nicknames for Toronto include T-Dot, The Big Smoke, and Hogtown. I think that which nickname people use depends on their generation. I used to call Toronto T-Dot, but then Drake made the nickname The Six more popular and that's what most people I know seem to use now. As for Give'er, this Canadian slang was more popular in central Canada and has since spread because it was used in several movies and TV shows. I've heard it used many times, but don't personally use it. Anyways, I agree that people should visit Canada's national parks to enjoy Canada's nature. Do you have a favourite national park?

This is such an adorable video. Reminds me of my Australian coworker who had just arrived in Canada about a week earlier. Canada has regional vocabulary just like many large countries. Some of these words are specifically Ontario words, others [likely] are Torontonian. In Saskatchewan, you would be hard pressed to find milk in a bag, and Mounties are our provincial police and local police in smaller centres, so we see them all the time [not on horses, or wearing red, but they are everywhere]. Also, in the US upper midwest they call soda 'pop' too. But the video is still helpful for newcomers. Cheers.

Some terms are generational too. 'Chesterfield' tends to be used by (some) older folks. 'The six' on the other hand, is most popular among young hipsters, especially Drake fans. Older Torontonians would say 'T.O.', 'T-dot', or just 'Tarrana'. And finally, I always spell it 'tuque', maybe because I grew up in Quebec and that' s the French spelling, but it also makes more sense phonetically. No one pronounces it like 'toke'!

What about a "dep" for a corner store. Im Canadian and I didn't know half of these terms because many of them are provincially based and not national, so id say "dep" as in depaneur is a good one. Also, considering Molson, is from Montreal, id have heard the term, but ive never heard that "Molson muscle" in my life.

@@lecoughlan Its Quebec lingo deriving from "depanneur". Practically all of Quebec uses it and so almost 1/4 of Canadians use the term id assume. English and French speakers alike in Quebec use it. My albertan friend had no clue what it was but uses it now.

Two years ago, I was on a tour visiting East Canada. I was in the Six and I was feeling myself as a real Canuck. Sometime ago I also visited The Peg. Canada is without a doubt my favorite country.

I was not for Canada 150. My last trip was one year after, on June 2018 with a group of 45 people for seven days. As a matter of fact, I must tell you that I lived in Montreal for two years with my wife and two children, one of them born there. This was in the sixties, quite a long time ago. Thereafter I have traveled to Canada four more times with my wife and another couple. We visited The Peg, Victoria and of course The Six and some other places. That’s why part of my heart ❤️ will always be in Canada. I am so grateful for the opportunity you give me to refresh my English so easily. You are the best. 👍👍👍

As a Canadian I am going to disagree with some of this. #1 - Eh: Eh can certainly make a sentence interrogative, but not always - it depends on where it falls in the sentence (as in, "Hold my beer, eh - I gotta take a whiz!"). In this context it is more like "okay" than "right". Eh can also replace the American "huh" as well (which can often end sentences). Your sample sentence at the top here also uses "eh" in a non-interrogative way. #2 - Hoser: I think you're way off on this one. A hoser simply refers to a "loser" (or contemptible person) and is linked to our great past-time - ice hockey - where the losing team had to stay back and hose down the rink. You don't have to be fat, beer swilling, or male to be a hoser. For the record, this can also be a term of affection among close friends, or be part of light-hearted banter among Canucks. #3 - Alcohol Slang: While the terms two-four and mickey are certainly Canadian, you forgot to mention the 26'er and 40 pounder (lb'er). A 26'er refers to a 26 oz bottle and a 40lber is the 40 ounce variant. These expressions (Mickey, 26'er, and 40lber) all refer to hard liquor bottle volumes. #4 - The Peg: You forgot to mention that Winnipeg is not just The Peg, but can also be referred to as Winterpeg because of the harsh winters it experiences. #5 - Mounties: You should probably explain that the reason YOU don't see Mounties everyday is because Toronto is in Ontario which has the OPP, not the RCMP as their regional police force. Here in the West, we are more likely to see Mounties with the exception of cities that have their own police force (like the VPD in Vancouver). Canadian language is diverse and varies across this massive country of ours - not all regional slang apply across the country (i.e. Bunny-hug - never heard it before). You also missed out on "thongs" (as in the footwear, not the undergarment).

I believe Canada is the ideal country of world peace. Canada is a very multicultural country but all nationalities seem to get along well. Canucks are kind and very patient to listen carefully to English learners even their English skills are poor. They don't give up on people like us whom have just started studying English. Okay, am Canadian, and most were correct but: - eh - no, you’ll hear that very little. Even she uses ‘right’ not eh - ‘The six’ for Toronto is a regionalism and not commonly used, are more likely to hear T.O.. - Milk in bags is more an Ontario thing, most places have the jugs. - Canuck is very rarely used in everyday speech. If somebody means Canadian, they generally say Canadian. - Winnipeg is most commonly, to my experience, called ‘Winterpeg’.

My favourite thing about Canada is that we have the freedom to be critical about our governments (Federal, Provincial, Municipal), especially in regards to how indigenous Canadians have suffered under countless regimes of white supremacist governments. That, and Nanaimo bars! Fun fact: in the 1950s the government in cooperation with the Americans (who were very worried about Russians claiming land in the arctic) sent the Mounties up to the arctic to slay all the Inuit’s dogs so that they couldn’t continue with their traditional nomadic hunting methods. This forced Inuits to live in government issued shanty towns, living on rations of wheat so they could live the White way. The more you know.

Thanks for your comment, Michael. When I read the first part, it was very serious in tone and I agree with you completely. The government treated, and still continues to treat, First Nations in this country terribly and much more should be done to try and compensate them and attempt to make their lives better now after so much oppression. Then when I got to the Nanaimo bar part I suddenly burst out laughing. I enjoy your style of writing; telling it like it is, making the mood lighter with a bit of humour and then packing a final punch with your 'fun' fact about the mistreatment of the Inuit. As an English teacher though, I'll give you some feedback on how to make your sentences better. The words 'current' and 'now have the same meaning, so it is redundant to use them both in the same sentence as you have.
