I grew my first dahlia last year and now I'm hooked. I've got two seedlings in starter trays now hoping for more. I saved them from mine and like you said it feels like Christmas I can't wait to see what I get. I'll have to love them they'll be my first.

I live in Ontario, Canada (the Niagara Region). I was wondering if Kelvin Floodlight Dahlias are the type of perennial where I can just plant it & forget about it. I've been watching videos that talk about *removing the tubers*. I don't know what a tuber is, but I'm not planning on planting them in pots. I plan on planting them in the backyard. So, can I simply plant the bulbs,and let nature take it's course? Or are there any special maintenance requirements?

Michael what zone are you in ....are you also in Ontario? On GEORGIAN bay the Japanese beetles just decimated my beautiful David Austin roses ...but strangely don’t touch my dahlias... I thought it was because dahlias aren’t exactly fragrant, you don’t find that they manage to get in with the bottoms of your shade cloth up off the ground? ....you have some wonderful plants -What Canadian exhibitions do you show your flowers at? I am zone 4B and would need a greenhouse to grow flowers the size of yours ! ...our season is so short. Thnx so much giving the names, your video is much appreciated!

Hi there. This is Lori, owner of this channel. You’re looking for fertilizer with a higher middle number. Tomato fertilizer is a good example of what you could be applying to strengthen the stems. I also make comfrey tea (think I have a video on my Facebook page on how this is done) which is high in phosphate as well.

How did you get such a huge size of dhalias ? Plz share about the fertilizer you apply.,
@singingmeadowsfarm Жыл бұрын
It’s not necessarily about the fertilizer. First you need to get a cultivar that produces big flowers. Not all dahlias will do that. Second you need to only let 3 blooms grow on the plants. All other branches are removed.
@sureshpatel3225 Жыл бұрын
They are great but too tall developers dwarf variety ? when do you sell the tubes.
@singingmeadowsfarm Жыл бұрын
Yes, the dahlias in Michael’s garden were quite tall but if grown in full sun, they wouldn’t be that tall. The screen Michael grows under shades the plants a little.

I have around 100 Dahlia's. Do you ever have problems with the foliage dying from the base leaves and gradually continue upward? I constantly remove them but by the end of summer they are pretty stalk like at the base to maybe the middle. Is this normal?

@@ThatBrickChic I started to get it this year in July/Aug again but I think it is overwatering. I stopped watering around Sept and they never looked as good as they do now.

@@Industen - oh interesting. I am in Edmonton and we are usually so dry mid-August into fall. I probably am over watering too. Thanks for the info!
@phifediggy9659 Жыл бұрын
Side note on this even though it's way late, I found it happened to me with too small of a pot plus lack of consistent watering, either too wet or too dry. Like us, plants get stressed and that's all it is. Keep em fed and watered, you'll have some happy dahlias

Is the sun's rays harmful to the plant? Why the cover? Is it possible to root the branch with water?
@singingmeadowsfarm2 жыл бұрын
The cover helps to keep the colour on the blooms. In the hot sun, they fade. Dahlia cuttings root very easily in potting soil.

is it too late is auguest to cross for seeds this is my first full year of growing.
@singingmeadowsfarm2 жыл бұрын
No August is not too late to perform your dahlia crosses. Note that the seed pods will require several weeks to mature. I also have cut the pods with several inches on stem, put in water and allowed to mature inside. Sometimes this will work.

What do you mean when you say 5 up or 6 up
@singingmeadowsfarm3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chuck. It means that when we take the top of the plant off or stop it to get the side shoots to start growing, we only allow 5 or 6 branches to grow. We will only allow one bloom on each of these branches. This is how we get the best size blooms. Note that this is how we grow we show only. In the garden, you're not as worried about size.
