I have watched this video I think a million times and have told a million people to watch it also lol . It was my inspiration for my FIRST dahlia garden last yr 2017 and I shared the flowers with so many people for different reasons like funerals, weddings, gifts, etc. and they loved it. Learned a lot but I lost most of the tubers in the winter because I dried them out to much before storing. My bucket list would include visiting you and your garden to tell you personally how you have blessed my life when I needed it most. I am growing them again this yr. Hubby even made me a Texas Prepper Utube video greenhouse with added potting table because I liked yours so well and the house is way less messy. I need to know now how to start them better so I don't get so many shoots coming up. I break off all except one like I see in you pots. I hope that is the right thing to do. Also pruning them in the summer was hard for me to learn to do . I need help there if you can give me ideas. Thank-you so much for this video, please help me if you can. I know you must be very busy now.

That was very helpful. I'm growing my first dahlia (singular). I put a set of tubers in the ground for fun, but didn't think it was going to grow at all, as I had heard that Dahlias are quite difficult to even get to grow at all. Now it has just started showing above the ground. I got a bit panicky, realising I didn't know how to properly care for it. Your video has shown me all I need to know! I will refer to it througout the year. Lets hope I can keep mine alive and comfortable. Thank you so much and congratulations on the spectacular garden!

I usually restrict plants to a single stem, though for shorter varieties I sometimes allow two stems to grow. The shoots you remove can be used for cuttings if you like. The art is to to divide your field tubers to get several small "chicken leg" tubers, each with one or two shoots. Any tubers with no shoots can be discarded, they don't add anything. There are lots of ways to divide field tubers, I use scissors, knives, loppers, and on occasions I've used a chisel!
@nicnac.4 жыл бұрын
Geoff, how do you stand on the argument that tubers don't make as good plants as cuttings? Clearly this works for you, but do you find some loose their quality and colour? I follow your way but a few have lost their colour and vigor!
@Dahliaholic4 жыл бұрын
To DontmatterPth. I am guessing you are in the USA. Many Americans store their tubers in a cool basement. Anywhere that is cool and frost free will do. The mother tuber is darker coloured than the other tubers and tends to be softer. However, my suggestion to you is that you leave the dahlia in the pot, dry it out as best you can before the winter, and store it somewhere cool. The soil it is in will help protect it. Don’t worry about the mother tuber. If it survives the winter you can remove the mother tuber in spring. I have never tried growing dahlias indoors, but so long as you don’t let it get too wet it’s worth a try.
@Dahliaholic4 жыл бұрын
Re growing from tubers, I do find that some varieties lose their vigour over time. However I have also found that growing from cuttings can sometimes result in the plant not producing any tubers. I try to grow at least one plant from each variety as a cutting and growing it in a small pot which is not allowed to flower. I find that “pot tubers” produce strong plants the following year.

Dahlias will grow in most soils except heavy clay. They like soil that retains moisture but drains freely (or the tubers will rot), a position in full sun, and shelter from cold winds. If you can add organic matter such as compost or manure, they will grow even better.

Turning the tubers upside down helps any excess water drain away. They are then less likely to rot in storage.
@Dahliaholic8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do get some mildew, but I try to prevent it before it gets bad. I spray with a systemic fungicide in mid summer, and again if I see signs of mildew. If it starts to get bad I remove the lower leaves on the plants to try to improve air circulation. Some varieties are more prone; if they are particularly susceptible I throw out the variety. Re compost I don't use any accelerators, I leave it to the elements to do their thing. I mix all sorts of vegetable matter, grass cuttings, plus dead heads, then at the end of the dahlia season I chop up stalks and put alternate layers of dahlias and leaves off trees in the area.

What a tremendous video!!!!! 2 things that Geoff and Heather choose not to do: 1) take the cuttings in spring including a little of the tuber once they've begun to send shoots - cuttings will give more vibrant colors. 2) Pinch off the side shoots to maximize long stems and large, brilliant individual blooms. I think that Geoff and Heather's plan is just wonderful for a mass of color and impact - and I plan to follow their lead except for the 2 exceptions. Another exception really - in Zone 5 I can't leave the dahlias out in a "cold greenhouse" - they would be compost by March. This year I'm trying packing in moist potting medium in cardboard boxes with a blanket around the entire group in my good friend's basement. I was surprised by how closely zone 8 seems to be in TIMING only - to zone 5 - I thought that dahlias would continue through November there. Stockport Zone 8b: -9.4°C to -6.7°C
