It's a sad day as CN 3206 and CN 3269, presumably the only two units online, lead a 18 unit procession of old workhorses destined for scrap. (20 units in total)
IC 2462, CN 2019, BCOL 4623, CN 2424, CN 2008, CN 2003, CN 2038,
CN 2005, CN 2037, BCOL 4619, CN 2402, CN 2036, CN 2432, BCOL 4620,
CN 2431, CN 2434, CN 2444, CN 2180 would be the retirees.
Seen approaching the Weston Road Bridge July 26, 2023.

Nope saw an article the other day about the worlds longest and heaviest trains miles long BUT each and every one was a one off made for testing rail capabilities with super long and heavy trains. Most were loaded with coal or iron ore. But this looks to be in the running for top 10 humongus😮

It took me back a very long time when you would see similar trains of old British steam locos being being taken off somewhere for scrapping. I daresay that many had been built at Crewe Works, a huge complex when I was young.

That was probably close to a 20,000 ton train. When I finished my 30 yrs with the CN in 2015 that was about all they did with just head end power. Now if it was set up dp then you might see 22,000 tons or more.

I was gonna say the same thing… you usually don’t hear ET44’s that loud because they’re so silenced because of the emissions. But those two were loud and screaming while they were pulling. Almost like a GEVO series on a regular day.

They’re on the Hilton outbound. It’s downhill to a light at the Humber river and they’re in dynamic braking and that’s why it’s so loud. Also, with 2 AC units its limit is 0.5 hp per ton so with about 8600hp, the tonnage is approximately 17,200. BUT, when units are deadheaded, we don’t count the weight of the deadheaded units.

Could someone explain to what extent is the train in this video part of 'the funeral'? Is it all of the locomotives, or are the lead engines viable and to remain in service? What about the rolling stock (if that's the term for the cars being pulled behind the engines)? Many of them look old and in poor condition. Obviously, the cars loaded with forestry products are still in service for now. Thanks for any/ all explanations!

There's a few in there that look like they are switch engine material, but my guess they are just being stored. I worked for BNSF, and it was very common when coal sets weren't needed, that locomotives would be set out in either freight house yards or in some cases, long sidings that weren't in regular use anymore.
@Thisoldhiker

I'm sure that if there is usable life in them, they will be stored or sold overseas. North American railroads appear to be in the business of squeezing every last dollar out of old equipment and facilities.

they don't look like they are being scrapped i worked for CN for 40 years they don't scrap units with that many usable parts still on them my guess they have been sold to another railway either in Mexico or farther south or they are leased out engines coming back after being abused and cannibalized down in the states. the American railroads have a habit of taking the parts off our engines that they liked like the comfortable seats, radios, hot plates microwaves and other things theirs didn't have. We got em back though we would steal their AC units from their engines and put them in ours until CN started ordering ours with AC in them

How many locos were there, I counted 13. Each one of them is a diesel electric? Ok, use them in winter to supplement the grid that is grossly under resourced in the way of generation capacity. I forget how many mW each unit generates, but as an emergency generation source, makes sense. Sorry😢, my bad, nothing makes sense in the face of the mighty $.

@@sommebuddy Unfortunately, what the eco nuts don’t grasp, is that the use of fossil fuel fuels, will not stop overnight at the snap of one’s fingers, and they need to chill a little bit in the short term. 😎 So, until some really smart eco nut comes up with an alternative, I fear we is stuck with what we have. 😥 This would be a short term solution only, also a good recycling alternative, but unfortunately no carbon credits like wind generation.

@@bunkerhill4854 It might be a bit late this year as the rail tracks will be out of action until the thaw. Underinvestment in infrastructure is continually a big problem, until extreme weather conditions arrive, a bit like the leaky roof, it’s not a problem till it rains. I like your suggestion. Problem is, it’s too logical, and who would cough up the dollars to do it….?

@@briandalrymple9986 Right, and why acquire new capacity at such a warm and sunny time? Government thinking in action.
