It's sad and beautiful all at the same time, that's what makes this song special and unique. Realize it was *both* of them who were looking elsewhere for their soul mate and they didn't even realize they already found them.

It's two people together for a long time, feeling bored...not realizing that they are not bored with their partner, but bored with themselves. They stopped communicating. But they learned a lesson...if you want something in your relationship, say so. If you want things to stay fresh...make things fresh. I think it's a beautiful song and had a good message.

You never heard this? This was a huge # hit in the 1970s. ‘Old lady” was a cool way to say longtime girlfriend or wife in the 60s and 70s.

You killed me with, "Why does he look like he wants to do my Taxes?" I laughed so hard i had to replay it. You have to understand it was the 70's and what we saw as normal back then looks goofy and dorky as hell now days. Like my high school pics of me with a mullet, wearing leisure shirts and corduroy jackets in bell bottems. I wouldn't be caught dead in those threads now days, but thats how things change with time.

He did have a second hit, The Answering Machine Song. It's not as catchy as Escape, but is also a story.

I heard on the news one time, that this situation actually happened in the Philippines I believe. This guy answers a personal ad, arranges to meet some woman at a bar, she walks in, and it's his wife, they didn't just smile and say oh it's you! They got into a major fist fight! With her yelling at him, " what were you doing answering a personal ad?!" And him answering, what were you doing writing one?!"

Such a happy beat about something terrible. Im surprised you kept a smile when you were listening to the lyrics. I never liked that term "old lady." That was a good way you put it. He is a songwriter, couldn't get anyone to record this song, the producer said you can sing, just do it yourself.

It was just a fun song from long ago. You shouldn't take offense at the lyrics. It was HER letter he responded to, so she was as guilty as he, y'know? lol. Rupert came to loathe his own creation due to constant requests to sing it. Thanks for closely listening to the content. A lot of reviewers just don't get it. Another one like this is Lola, by the British group The Kinks. Have to listen closely or it will fly over your head.
