I think you missed the idea. The personals column in the paper was a way of looking for dates before there was such a thing as the internet. He responded to an ad in the personals, but he had a wife (his old lady). When he went to O'Malleys to hook up with the woman, his wife walked in. They both tried to cheat (for much the same reasons) and ended up serendipitously finding each other!

This song never transfers to todays younger audience, they have no idea what the personal ads are.

no idea how old she is but I'm 24 and I know exactly what he's talking about, I remember (when I was 22 and my parents played this song) and I was like "wait a second, is this guy cheating on his wife?"

When this was first released it was simply named "Escape". After it had been out for a short time his agent called him and insisted he rename the song to something with Pina Colada in the name. Rupert was adamant it stay named "Escape". When it was explained to him that 90+% of the people calling in to radio stations and requesting it were asking for "The Pina Colada song", the compromise was to name it "Escape (The Pina Colada Song"

Catchy song with cute lyrics. From back in the days before internet and online dating, when newspaper ads had to suffice.

Did you not listen to the words to the song? The words are the kicker to this song.
@quicktasticАй бұрын
The song is not really about Pina Coladas or escaping. He thought he was bored with wife/girlfriend and went looking for the perfect girl with shared interests. He found her in the personal columns and, when he met her at the bar, it turned out to be his girlfriend. They were together and didn't really know each other. It is song about how couples should communicate better.

His biggest most popular song he made and it pretty much fits in the Yacht Rock genre .. The tropical vibe in pop music was huge for a few years of the latter 70s.. Check out Pablo Cruise What Cha Gonna Do / Love Will Find A Way

fun fact ... there's a sound effect in the song that you hear after the chorus which sounds like an ocean wave , the creator of the song says that the sound was a mistake which happened in the studio but sounded so good they decided to leave it in ........ by the way i recommend you give a reaction to his other song called ''HIM''

"Him" is, really, the top-echelon Rupert Holmes song. Go listen to that! [Rupert wrote for a lot of people and is a skilled writer and, particularly, arranger.👍👍]

Ok, Rere. Rupert Holmes had a follow-up song to this called HIM. I'll not give you aclue as to what it's about since figuring it out is part of your journey. And you seem to like to comment your feelings and opinion. More from the soft rock category for you react to are,; SUSPICIONS by Eddie Rabbit. BABY COME BACK by Player. DON'T IT MAKE MY BROWN EYES BLUE by Crystal Gayle, who is country legend Loretta Lynn's younger sister. And a song about teenage angst and being an outsider called AT 17 by Janis Ian. Keep going and enjoy the music.

This was the last Billboard Number one hit song of the 70s as this song was released in the Fall of 1979 where it would hit Number 1 in late December of that year. Soft Rock was a very popular genre which started in the mid 70s and carried over into the early 80s.

Most people don't get it. It a lack of communication story between couples

I noticed you giggling when he mentions "making love on the beach". Well if want to blush so hard it hurts, give a listen/look at Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight". It's a 1 hit wonder from the 70s. Also, if you want another soft song from the same era, have a look at "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright.
@RadioJammorАй бұрын
Not an entirely serious song, as the final verse goes, but a clever and witty one. There were a few about in the late seventies of that ilk - B.A. Robertson comes to mind with songs like "Bang, Bang" and "Knocked It Off". As for Rupert, he only had a couple of UK hits, the other being "Him", which is a little more serious but with a similar theme of infidelity and with strong, story-telling lyrics and a catchy chorus. Understand that artists at that time often only got a look-in for a couple of hits because competition and turnover was crazy. Making the top ten then meant you had a really big hit. And this was also a time of massive change of musical styles and fashion. Songs like this quickly gave way to faster pop songs, synth music, etc, as we went into the post-punk period and a multitude of new genres coming into life. It was time for the new wave.

There are other groups with a softer rock, the British band 10CC "I'm Not In Love", and or British singer Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street".

You got it great reaction. Really enjoying. Rupert had no other huge hits but wrote and recorded some solid music in the 70s. Another soft or Yacht Rock singer from the era was Christopher Cross. You should react to his song Arthur’s Theme or Sailing. Think you’d enjoy!
