Another tradition is the two-man saw: Right after the ceremony, the couple has to saw a log in half as a team, their first common task. Since it involves pushing, pulling and getting into a groove together, I think it's a great symbol.

That’s a good metaphor for marriage

At the Standesamt, the couple usually wear different clothes, if this wedding is long before the church wedding. If one is just before the other, they of course have the elaborate clothes, with often a white dress for the bride.

Many years ago I was at a wedding reception Polterabend. The best man had a plumbing company, he unloaded a whole gravel truck full of toilet bowls that the bride and groom had to sweep up!

My best friend married on top of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. That was pretty nice. We went up there with our highheels and dresses. Many tourists took pictures of us, we were a bit out of place. Most people my age who are married already do not marry in a church, because they no longer care about religion, even here in Bavaria, the most catholic part of Germany. When my brother married, I was witness. I signed a paper, nothing else. However, I think my brother did not like it much that his friends draged his baby sister (me) to a strip club during his batchlor party.

German brides usually rent their dress. The shop will make sure it fits and will get it cleaned professionally later.

I was invited to a wedding and when I handed over my wedding present, I said: "I hope that this day will not be the best day of your life." That didn't go down well at all. However, the bride came up to me later, thanked me and said: "That was the best wish we received today."

Normally you make an agreement that the bride will not be stolen, because that busts the whole celebration.

I'm always amazed how much BS DW tells about German traditions. Research is really not their thing. The Polterabend is a Northern European custom that also exists or existed in Scandinavia or the Baltics. Originally there was rumbling/poltern in the nights after the wedding - bachelors made noise in front of the house of the newly wed, played pranks, sang raunchy songs and could only be driven away with a lot of alcohol. Later the custom was shifted to the evening of the civil wedding, which often takes place days before the church wedding. It wasn't until the 1950s that people began to destroy dishes; before that would have been too decadent . Myrtle in the bridal bouquet was and is not a lucky charm, but a sign of purity and virginity, just like the color white. So actually completely inappropriate for most wedding ceremonies. Bride kidnapping is now out of fashion. I haven't seen a wedding where a bride was kidnapped in the last 30 years. This is probably also because there are hardly any village pubs left. The kidnapping also took place late in the evening and not on the way to the reception. The cutting of the wedding cake and the cake in general spilled over from the English royal family to Germany and replaced another custom. Originally, the bride and groom ate together from the same plate on their wedding day, and in some regions this is still the case. In our case, the groomsmen gave us a plate on which the first names of the bride and groom and the wedding date were written. The couple also ate from one plate at their silver wedding anniversary. Those who get married in church usually wear a long wedding dress and sometimes with a long train or veil. It depends on your wallet. In Germany people are more modest than in the USA, where many weddings in a normal middle-class environment already cost six figures. So far it is not the case that the wedding day is considered THE bride's big day, where she and only she alone are the focus. For us, the groom actually plays a role and is not just a decoration.

To be honest: I don't like these kinds of videos about how Germany (or any other country) is doing stuff or how a german acts or what his flat looks like ... They are outdated or so specific, that even me as a german can't see myself as a "typcial german" (
