I was surprised they did not include Pembroke Castle, but this didn't include South-West Wales. I have recently been to Chepstow Castle. The most remarkable thing they've got are the Castle gates. Now, dendrochronology ( tree-ring analysis) is a precise science, working on the pattern of tree-rings in the wood used; the widths of the rings in the timber reflect how good the particular years were for growth. Statistical analysis then calculates how likely that piece of wood was felled at a certain time. This technique has proved that the substantial tough wooden gates we've got were from the same date as when much of the castle was built, about 1200! Chepstow Castle was the favourite home of one of the greatest nobles of our history, William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke. A penniless younger son, he made a fortune by besting wealthy nobles in the (very rough) tournaments of the day. He went to the Holy Land, bringing back the Middle Eastern idea of building round ( rather than square) towers. He was known for his honest and honourable behaviour serving various Kings, and early on was rewarded by being allowed to marry a great heiress; even though she was 17, and he 43, the marriage worked! King John was horrible, and William steered rather clear. But William advised on the drafting of Magna Carta in 1215, which King John had no intention of sticking to. But as King John lay dying the following year, knowing that William was honourable, he entrusted the Guardianship of the Realm, on behalf of his nine-year old son Henry III, to William. Not only did William, aged about 70, and fighting personally, defeat the French King son at Lincoln in 1217, but he established our liberties by re-issuing Magna Carta. 'Marshal' was a title, officially looking after the King's horses, but it had great prestige. Informally passing down through William's descendants, the title, later 'Earl Marshal of England' became formally hereditary with his descendants the Dukes of Norfolk, who still are responsible for organising our Coronations and State Funerals. So Edward, the 18th Duke of Norfolk, as Earl Marshal, played a major part in both Queen Elizabeth II's funeral and King Charles III's Coronation recently. The Landmark Trust can arrange for you to stay in historic properties. I believe castles aren't that expensive to buy, but beng Grade 1 Listed, you're not allowed to do anything with them. If you want to build one, ancient law means you have to have a "licence to crenellate' (have battlements) which is difficult to get. I have also been to Raglan Castle. I think it was there that they"ve got the castle accounts 1301-1304; fascinating, showing how castles were run.

As someone from Caerphilly, I think we take these castles for granted and it seems only tourists visit them. One that I like is Grossmont, which wasn't listed. But there are castles everywhere here.

Wales has the most castles per square mile in Europe and has the most in the United Kingdom. Whereas in Scotland and England their castles are mostly 19th century follies which have been converted into hotels and not classed as medieval castles. I Found this info on the Web.

Sorry, Wales has the most castles in Europe per land area. Also, 70% of "castles" in Europe are actually Chateaux, where Noblemen built them as homes first and not fortification first.

@@gagada124 This seems true, in another video a German said there were more castle's there in Germany, but most of the ones I looked at were just at best fortified fairy tale looking buildings on hills, definitely not what I'd call a castle.
