The english version is not spoken by the original actors. They tried that for a few scenes (you can find that on KZbin) but they then decided to use professional voice actors instead (which is a shame, because the original actors used a very funny accent)

Yes, many puns would not work in the translation. This starts with the title. Traum = dream Raum = room or in Weltraum = space. Raumschiff = space ship Traumschiff = dream ship And there is also a German TV series called "Das Traumschiff", which is a soap that takes place on a cruise ship. It is running for 40 years now.

Traumschiff Surprise started as a series of parodies on a tv show „Bullyparade“ (named after comedian Michael „Bully“ Herbig), and the movie spoofs more than just StarTrek. It was quite popular in German cinemas.

Michael Bully Herbig is a well known comedian in Germany. He had a comedy show on TV and also made movies for the cinema. "Der Schuh des Manitu" was a huge success in German cinemas, too. It's a parody and hommage to the old German "Winnetou" trilogy with Lex Barker and Pierre Brice (1960s). They were also very popular. Since I was a fan of both the "Winnetou" trilogy and Michael Bully Herbig I watched it in the cinema and several times on TV and VHS/DVD. Another parody film is "Der Wixxer" (Starring comedians like Oliver Kalkofe and Bastian Pastewka). It's a parody to the Edgar Wallace films like "Der Hexer" from the 1960s .

What is important to know is that the pronunciation of the 3 main actors is a little 'special'. They speak the way you would imagine stereotypically gay men to speak, to put it mildly. Of course, that makes many situations even funnier. Unfortunately, this doesn't work when reading the subtitles. Of course that's a shame for people who don't understand German... Bully, Christian Tramitz and Rick Kavanian, when I spall those names correctly, had a comedie series named Bullyparade. Each show is a compilation of sketches. Bully made a few movies to extend those sketches. As far as I know, there are "Der Schuh des Manitu" ("The shoe of Manitu"), "Traumschiff Surprise - Periode 1" ("Dreamship Surprise - Period 1") and "Lissi und der wilde Kaiser" ("Lissi and the wild emperor"). The last movie is an animation-movie. I would love to see a movie about "Die Kastagnetten", but I don't think, that is possible. And I think, the jokes would be lost in translation as it depends highly on word-play.

There was a tv show called Bullyparade from 1997 to 2002, where they did short comedy sketches. Out of that came Der Schuh des Manitu (the shoe of Manitu), which was a parody of the old Winnetou-movies, basically german western movies from the 60ies filmed in Yugoslawia. The guys were so succesful, that Bullyparade ended and almost everyone got his own show. Traumschiff Surprise was not really a reunion but rather a clever usage of their united popularity by having a continuation of Schuh des Manitu, but without just making a boring part 2.

The head behind this movie is Michael Herbig (or "Bully" Herbig). He and his friends Christian Tramitz and Rick Kavanian started as a comedy trio at a radio station. Later they moderated a late night tv show called "Bullyparade". In these radio and tv shows they did among other things some comedy acts about famous movies like Star Trek and in germany popular novel adaptations from Karl May. Traumschiff Surprise apparently is a parody about Star Trek. The movie was very popular but I wouldn't call it a blockbuster. Traumschiff means dream ship or cruise ship. "Traumschiff" is the name of an old german daily tv soap about a cruise ship. There is a second movie by these guys called "Der Schuh des Manitu" or "Manitou's Shoe".

There in german TV since 1980s a show , Traumschiff ', every year only two episodes , shown in Christmas/ New Years Eve time. Simple family friendly stories , about crew and passengers of a Cruising (?) Ship durig a ship journey.

In Germany, "Star Trek" is known as "Raumschiff Enterprise", so they switched it to "(T)raumschiff Surprise" to make a little fun of the series - but they mix it up with some ingredients of "Star Wars" with a "Lord Maul" as the big evil guy...Till Schweiger, he said, "If I do it in America, I´ll never return to Germany". They started with Comedy TV Show and The Movie was big success Hit but is Comedy Parody of couple of films the Trio loved and likes and references some of their Shows sketches and the former Film Der Schuh des Manitu Winnetou Parody from the sketches as well from the Show but bigger also pretty successful (the shoe of the manitu Sequel is coming next Year in August 14th 2025 Das Kanu des Manitu-the canoe of the manitu in german speaking cinemas in Germany and Austria) . Only the Otto Waalkes Comedy Movies had the same Success before in the 80´s/90´s. With over 10 Million people watching the films in Cinemas as well as those new comedy movies watched by so many people. Die Bullyparade is the name of their Show and they also did a Movie based on the Show itself having sketches in the Movie also blown up and some tiny Sequel stuff to Schuh des Manitu and Traumschiff Surprise as well in it. That Movie is called Bullyparade der Film (the Movie). Lena Mayer-Landruth former Song Contest Winner (with Satellite) has also a small role in the Movie.

You can't really translate such a movie as a lot of its comedy comes from the regional accents used by the characters. The emperor for example speaks in an east German accent, the accent itself is hilarious for non eastern Germans and even more when used by an evil character, you just can't take this character serious. And that is no offense to the east Germans, many German accents are just hilarious in the right circumstance and context. A lot of German comedy evolves around playing with this aspect of the language, its great for character building and making fun about regional cultural differences and stereotypes.

what doesnt really translate well in subtitles i think, is the constant over the top gay acting, its incredibly bigoted, although, 2004, i can only remember the hype, and cant recall any real criticism. i was just a young teenager back then though, im sure some people called it out and were probably just laughted at. for a bit of context, the cast had a tv comedy show back then, the bully herbig show, they made a movie, "der schuh des manitu", that was "one of the most successful german movies after the second world war", in 2001. they had one over the top gay character; traumschiff surprise was kind of the spiritual follow up to that movie, and clearly they then thought, yeah, we need way more of that one joke over and over again. i think they got many people to watch it back then, so the movie did well, but at the same time i dont think they have done anything noteworthy since its release. kind of a sad epitaph, considering how iconic they were for a while. and that song. oh my fck god that damn song ;) its the only thing i distinctly remember abotout that movie, that song was played constantly ;D

Till Schweiger is a terrible Actor. And has some sort of Problem with beating other actors while being drunk. ps. Schweiger is mumbling all the time. Even native german speakers have problems to understand him (maybe worse thru his addiction). Also his acting is far from the top. He only had luck to look handsome and got roles in some great movies in the past.

That movie was bad compared to their tv show skits, i think it was a bad decision to spoof the prequels, should have stuck to spoofing Star Trek, that was what made the skits funny after all, the Star Wars bits were pretty awful

While I don't know the TV show, I've always regarded "Der Schuh des Manitu" as being the better of the two. For non-Germans, that's a spoof based on a series of German western novels and the movies made from them. Incidentally, while "Traumschiff Surprise" is not a sequel, it's still the later of the two, so maybe the "sequel curse" still applies to some extent... On the positive side, I can imagine that Star Trek and Star Wars are more widely known internationally compared to "Winnetou". It was rather easy to connect "Captain Kork" with the other one, but that might not be the case for "Der Schuh des Manitou". Although, it might not actually be that important -- I've never been a fan of Winnetou myself, and the movie worked just fine for me regardless.
