Well, it may be a little hardf to understand the movie if you are not German. Background: There has been an author in Germany in the late 19th century called Karl May. He never has been in the US but he wrote some very famous books about the west and the most famous were "Winetou" about an Apache chief and his white friend. This books were the basic for movies in the 60s which were also very famous in Germany. And these movies are what "Der Schuh des Manitou" is related to. Same aesthetics, same costums, very similar scenery, evereyone here who is 40 years and older know exactly what it's about.

On the other hand, I've never been a fan of Winnetou (but I have the DVD for this one), or "Westerm" in general. So yes, the names of the main characters, and they even meet Karl May in the movie, but that's about it. I think it's still fun even if the names are just random names for you, or you wonder about the significance of those few seconds with the Karl May character. I'm pretty sure the abundance of "Western-movie" tropes in the movie are found in US movies as well.

In his late years his career as artist/ writer got problems, became more a kind of philosopher and peace activist. Berta von Suttner (also peaceactivist) heared a speech of him and noted, it was better than she expected.

Just as the movie "Galaxy Quest" is a loving parody of Star Trek, this movie is a loving parody of the Karl May movies. And for both, you can enjoy them when you don't know the originals, but you'll miss half of the comedy.

Take a look at "Superperforator", a clip from the movie, where baddie asks the heroes for a last wish and grants it ...

Also to be mentioned is that some of the characters speak german with an bavarian accent. That makes it even more funny.

3:38 One of the last lines of the movie is a Stan Laurel reference… so, yes, there are significant slapstick comedy influences in the movies of Bully Herbig.

This is an actual scene with subtitles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eam6lHeEoMt5kK8 Not selected because its "the best" or something like that, but because it has subtitles that aren't auto-generated so they are pretty accurate.

There is an English dubbed version (by the actors) on the BluRay.
@Flamebeard08158 ай бұрын
Sadly, it's only a few dubbed minutes, as the studio deemed it not feasible to have the original actors do the synchro for an American audience without angering them with stereotypes. They tried to have native speakers do the synchro, but had to pull the plug on that as it became apparent that they weren't able to convey even a fraction of the humour.

I showed IT to an American friend.she laughed tears,even though she didnt know the original books. And to all the woke folks: there ist no cultural appropreation,the author made Up all the tribes and customs,he never visited the states,and never saw a Native American in His life

If you like movies like the Naked gun movies with Leslie Nielsen, this is your movie, if not you should avoid it, because it's very, very silly.

You can’t understand the true comic of this movie not knowing the true characters being ridiculed. The author Karl May having written numerous books about the red Indian Winnetou and his friend Charly, or better known as Old Shatterhand, a German of cause, are known to everybody in Germany.

I have a ambiguous relationship to this movie. I don't find it particularly good or funny, personally, but my uncle was part of the production crew and he was so proud of it and thus I feel melancholic and nostalgic about it, especially since my uncle died. He only was 10 years older than me and was more like a big brother than like a regular uncle and he died unexpectedly at a rather young age. It was interesting to watch the movie together with him and hear stories he told about the production, like how they all got food poisoning and had to work horribly sick for a week or so.
