Covers of famous songs are common enough on a great many albums. In this video, I'll talk about a few songs originally written and recorded by Canadian artists that were then covered by American or British bands.

The Hootie cover version made 54-40 a truck load of money!

Really cool video. I learned some stuff. I actaully did know about the Blowfish/Fifty-four Forty thing, though I never really got into either band. I remember when the cover was played on the radio the local DJs loved to point out that it was a Fifty-Four Forty cover. One I didn't know about, and I've loved this album for years, is "Timepiece". had no idea that one was a cover. That's a fantastic song and album. This isn't a real Canadian connection but just one that's always been in my head: the Bloodrock singer reminds me a lot of Burton Cummings. is it just me? There's a cool German heavy rock band from the 2010s called Zodiac. They cover two Canadian artists on their first album: "Cortez the Killer" from neil Young, and something from BTO...I think "Not Fragile"? Really cool band, especially their second album, Sonic Child.

Hey, that's a lot for contributing to the conversation! Zodiac, eh? I'll have a listen. I can kind of hear the Burton Cummins similarity. Maybe Bloodrock's singer is a Texan cousin to Burton. I've got two more 54-40 albums on order but coming from the U.S. We'll see how it goes from there. Right now I am really keen on hearing more Canadian artists that I passed by or didn't really get to know. Thanks for the long comment! They're my favourites.

Great Video!, I just picked up Bloodrock 2 on vinyl the other day. I didn't know they did a cover version of The Churls - Time Piece on that album.

I still don’t have Bloodrock 2. There’s a song on that - DOA, I think - that people keep talking about. How is it? I have the first and third albums.

Excellent video. I love that there's a conspiracy theory associated with Klaatu.

Yes, that's quite a story. There was also the one that Frank Marino became a host for the spirit of Jimi Hendrix after Frank tripped on acid. Back to reality, I didn't include the story of Bonnie Dobson's song, "(Walk Me Out In The) Morning Dew" being "stolen" by Tim Rice. She won her song back in 1998. Lots of bands covered her song, including The Grateful Dead, Episode Six (with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover), and Nazareth. Late I'll do some videos about songs of the sixties that have often been covered. Maybe I'll do one about that one, too.

Sadly, I had to do multiple takes. I’ve been in Japan too long to just naturally slip into hoser mode.

It’s the only Hootie song I can think of.

Wow a costume change and full Canadian eh's 😂 I didn't know any of the originals but I know the Carpenters version. It seemed a strange song compared to the other stuff they did. Karen was a great drummer. Oh hang on I know of Krokus too.

Unfortunately, I couldn't totally slip into Canadian hoser mode as well as I used to. I've been in Japan too long! I need to watch more Bob and Doug McKenzie first next time.
