Kirk also brought in the main fast riff of Trapped Under Ice from "Impaler" by Exodus. Impaler wouldn't make it to an Exodus studio release until 2004's Tempo of the Damned, similar to how The Four Horsemen got a studio recording by Metallica before Dave re-recorded the original version "The Mechanix" for Megadeth. Also kinda similar to how Metallica recorded a cover of Holocaust's live exclusive The Small Hours, before Holocaust made their studio version in 1992. By the way, from one huge Voivod fan to another, please check out Holocaust. Their career underwent a VERY interesting trajectory when they reformed in the late 80s. And since you asked for some of our choices for albums that woke us up to something new, in approximate order of when I heard them: Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil Metallica - And Justice for All Voivod - Killing Technology thru Outer Limits Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables...really, their whole discog up to Frankenchrist Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy Daniel Johnston - Hi, How Are You? Death - Human Nas - Illmatic Die Kreuzen - Century Days Flower Travellin Band - Satori Swans - Children of God thru Soundtracks for the Blind Meme - Chitotetochi Death Grips - Exmilitary Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Holocaust - Hypnosis of Birds N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton The Beach Boys - The Smile Sessions Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly Stereolab - their entire 90s run Burzum - Filosofem Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine: Biomech Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares volume 1 Triple Six Mafia - Underground Vol. 1: 1991-1994

@@musicisajourney Holocaust are woefully obscure but brilliant, one of those bands that cry out for a career retrospective the way Voivod does. They're truly one of those bands where every album brings something new. Their run from 1989 to 2000 is the peak of their discography and Hypnosis of Birds in particular happens to be my all-time favorite album. But, everything (except maybe No Man's Land) is at least worth hearing. Their story is a band is quite interesting: after dissolving in 1984 thanks to a creative split (half the band wanted to go more commercial and split off into "Hologram", while lead songwriter John Mortimer wanted to go heavier and more avant-garde), they reformed with a new lineup in about 1988 with John Mortimer taking over as the singer and driving creative force. The stylistic difference between their debut The Nightcomers and their 1989 comeback EP The Sound of Souls is stark enough, and John forged his own path from there.

Great video, Peter. My all time favourite Canadian band, and an act I've seen far more times than any other. I'm not going to pull out my discography now, so this is all off the top of my head, but my thoughts: 1. Between the Bridges - we're on the same page here. This what OCTA and Navy Blues were paving the way to. It took me by surprise, as it was released rather low key from I recall and before I was really expecting anything from them after such a strong album with Navy Blues. Interesting is that this was the band's first dip into the the world of digital recording (it's a hybrid, according to Patrick). This album reminds me of everything I can vaguely recall from growing up in the era of 70's AOR on the FM dial. Timeless, and Andrew's tour de force, as far as I'm concerned with very strong openers, closers and, as you mentioned, a kick ass epic in the middle. 2. Navy Blues - What can I say, this album kicks off strong and carries on through just as well all the way. Now we're squarely into the FogHat/Kiss/AC/DC vibes of the 70's. I can almost smell the weed on the set of Dazed and Confused while listening to this album. Incredible 1-2-3 punch of the opening then Andrew takes it to his usual deep cut groove (man I miss when he played keys more often). 3. One Chord To Another - My introduction to the band around the time I first saw them live at the infamous EdenFest in 96. I was looking for something "Indie and different" and this album was exactly what I was looking for. A fascinating example of their willingness to experiment with new sounds at the time, as Andrew's drums were recorded remotely (from Toronto) on a 4-track cassette, contributing to the "low-fi" garage band/retro vibe of the album. Love it. Am I the only one to notice the Stones vibe on Take the Bench? 4. Twice Removed - I backed up to catch this one after the fact, so I guess I'm not an OG fan. But it stands the test of time as a true classic. Coax Me reminds me of all of the classic Canadian songs I grew up listening to on am radio as a kid from the likes of the Guess Who, Anne Murray, and Gordon Lightfoot. You neglected to mention My Generation and Snowsuite Sound which, by the way, I have sequeing perfectly from C'mon C'mon (We'e Gonna Get It Started) a Jay Ferguson "mix tape" playlist I'm still proud of to this day. 5. Never Hear The End Of It - the kitchen sink of what Sloan has to offer. Call out to two under appreciated highlights of their catalog on here, with the album opener, trading verses with each member of the "Avengers of Canadian Rock" (I just made that up) and Jay's absolutely gorgeous Light Years piano ballad (I had to learn to play it(. This album marked the point where Sloan locked in their sound fairly consistently from here on in, which is both a blessing and a curse, as far as I'm concerned, as I still miss the experimentation and diversity of their first 4 albums. 6. Steady - yep, I've given it enough time to confirm my initial impressions. This is a very strong outing just when I was beginning to fear an inevitable drop off was in the cards for some reason (surely, no band can continue so consistently this long - and don't call me Shirley). Patrick offers up some very strong and varied contributions, making a very strong return to form. Jay as well, making it look easy. Andrew and Chris... what can I say, it's a very solid Sloan album. 7, The Double Cross - another very strong 1-2-3 punch and plenty more very good tracks. 8. Action Pact - It's an odd one, but a strong one. A bit samey in parts, especially the first few tracks, largely due to Andrew's absence to mix it up a bit more. This strikes me as the rock album Patrick was going for - and a very cool take from the band. Very cool album cover which, by the way is an excellent seque to... check out the very cool mashup of Live On with The Other Man (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYjciYZ9ocaCaqc) 9. Commonwealth - Jay shines here with his suite (You've Got a Lot On Your Mind is a stone cold pop masterpiece), but hang on here... what Andrew has pulled off is masterful - absolutely a highlight. Chris comes in predictably strong here as well. Sorry, but I find the running order in particular of Patrick's side to be too samey, making it feel relatively mailed in. 10. Pretty Together - a transition album. They're still going for the arena anthems with the opener, but also searching for new styles and sounds. Their first full digitally recorded album, which somehow sticks with me as to maybe why their albums started to sound less varied from this point forward, at least in production. BTW, it's criminal the title song was left off the tracklist. The "demo" from one of their b-sides compilation is absolutely gorgeous! 11. Smeared - Since I came into Sloan with One Chord To Another, it took me some time to get into this, as it's so different than everything else I associated with the band at the time. But it's a grower, and where I'm more inclined to look to these days when I'm looking for a "deeper cut" Sloan that sounds different than contemporary Sloan. 12 - This album has some distinct highlights: Another strong showing from Andrew, Right To Roam from Jay, Spin Our Wheels and Satellite from Chris. However, this is where the list starts to reflect the downside of the style and sound that Sloan seems to have locked into by this point. The variety in production, as compared to their 90s albums, is what I think I miss most. 13. Parallel Play - Sloan's Beatles For Sale - even the album art looks tied and uninspiring. This is an album of leftovers from the massively ambitious Never Hear The End Of It and, unfortunately, it feels a bit like just that. Solid, but not as varied, interesting and compelling as others.

@@DamnableReverend Yeah, I never took to Nu Metal either though I had a Slipknot album and one by a band called One Minute Silence. I don’t have either now. Kittie seemed to have become associated with the scene partially by coincidence and they soon moved away from that style. I recommend listening to Eyes Wide Open and Shadows from the new album, Fire. I think they sound really good.

I’d love to play the drums again. Sooo many years ago 😫 I once had a CD shipped in a jewelcase without the shrinkwrap with the shipping information sticker keeping the lid shut. Not amazon mind, was a company that I otherwise bought from quite often called CD-wow. I got a replacement. So, what’s up this summer for Peter? Hei hei from Morten

Hi, Morten! Thanks for commenting. So, you were a drummer once, eh? It's funny you didn't compare my playing to Lars Ulrich as two other people did. Ha ha! I don't know if Amazon would have sent me a replacement since it was the only one they had in stock, but it was already a replacement, and I had recently complained about receiving a used CD when the product information did not say it was a used item. They gave me a refund on that one. This summer? Well, it was 39 degrees yesterday and will be 41 today. So, I guess the goals are avoiding heatstroke and working to pay for the forthcoming electricity bill on top of the veterinary bill!

@@musicisajourney Yeah, I tried. Had a drumkit and all, but never found anyone to play with. Then moved from house to flat after my dad passed and had to get rid of it. Then after a couple of years I did play in a band at the school I attended in Denmark. That was fun, played a couple of school events. No, I don’t really do make fun of peopøe humour too much? (At least I hope not) I’m not a good recipient of said humour, and I worry I’ll hurts peoples feeling if I dish it out. Also, despite him treating Jason Newsted like shit and having some sort of stroke on St Anger, I kind of like Lars. He’s a dane with success and they tend to tell people who envy them or badmouth them to sodd off. Haters don’t like it when their victims turn the tables on them I guess, ha ha. Oooh, that does not sound pleasant at all! Here its classic Scandinavian summer. After 35 degrees in may. Its 16-20 and wet wet wet now. @@mortenaastad796 I don't know why so many people don't like Lars. I always thought it was cool he was a Dane, like that guy from White Lion. I have no complaints about his drumming either. I can take the humour, especially when it's ribbing from people I know or sort of know. It happens every once in a while I get a nasty comment. But that's the way of the Internet, and I respond politely because people can make mistakes and they don't need to have a war over that. I have had some doubts over the years about what kind of band Blue Oyster Cult is and what they may stand for ... if nothing else in the eyes of their fans. I, personally, was glad to hear/see interviews/videos explaining how the BOC band members resisted being labeled a heavy metal band (I never thought of them as simply an American Black Sabbath) and hearing Buck Dharma Roeser explaining they are just as much a boogie rock band (see Buck's Boogie for one obvious example). I, also, have become tired of hearing people who claim The Cult worships the devil, that the proof is in The Symbol; the upside down cross of question. So, for myself, I was glad to hear the band was getting 'tired' of trying to shock in order to sell to a heavy metal(?) fan base. When I was 11 yrs old and starting to realize BOC was my favorite band I took a step back because of the drawings of dead german shepherds at the feet of the band members posing by a ME 262 with the BOC symbol plastered on the tail ... like a swastika? If I hadn't been aware of Agents of Fortune and my already favorite BOC album Spectres I might have stopped listening at the sight of Secret Treaties. But, thankfully I continued to listen; and just recently reintroduced myself to another Live album Some Enchanted Evening. It's better than Extraterrestrial Live. I also have Halloween Reapers (3 shows: 1979; 1982--when Al Bouchard was fired; 1986 when they were touring for Club Ninja); and, of course On Your Feet or on Your Knees. Blue Oyster Cult: the thinking man's rocknroll boogie band with sci-fy and heavy metal leanings.😎 I'm loving all these videos, analysis, et cetera of Blue Oyster Cult. Music is a Journey thanks for the video.

@@user-mu9cw8xe4r Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I think it’s clear early on that Blue Öyster Cult is not a heavy metal band but they employ some heavy metal elements at times, especially in the seventies when heavy metal rock and roll as it was regarded in those days could include BÖC. One thing I really admire about the band is that they have their own mythos. They never sang about the devil. They had aliens, magic, ghosts, and the unexplained to work with. They capture this almost Outer Limits or Twilight Zone feeling even when they sing about mundane things. I’m glad they never gave up on that!

@@musicisajourney some have pointed out the lyrics to Seven Screaming Diz Busters as the giveaway for their devil worship. Obviously, I disagree. It's one fleeting reference.
