As I’ve commented in the past, I really liked everything about EF except the pocket clips. Looks like they might have fixed that! I’m digging that.

I know you shout from the rooftop of CCE HQ to learn how to use a sharpening system, but for me the investment is a moot point because I just don't use my knives that much to make them dull to warrant a cash outlay like that. If you can learn to become okay using the Spidey flick opening, then I should at least try to not suck that much at flippers. Lol. Thanks for sharing, Jake.
@CanadianCuttingEdge6 жыл бұрын
I really do believe that getting a good budget sharpening system and then getting good at using it will bring a LOT of extra happiness to your knife hobby. Most folks don't need a TSPROF or even a Hapstone - the cash outlay of less than $50 is all that is really necessary for most folks, and that amount of money is hard to call expensive and easy to make it worth the expense. I used to be terrible at flippers myself. It just so happens that I got good at it before I started making youtube videos. It's all a matter of how willing I am to get my wife mad while we are watching TV. She just hates the noise of me playing with my knives, but I need the time to get better at it. One thing I think will never learn is how to play with butterfly knives. They are illegal here so that is my excuse - but of course, there are many items that are made exactly like a balisong but it has a spoon or comb instead of a blade and I could get those legally... But it will never happen.

Thank you for the recommendation on the lansky system. I love knives but know little about sharpening them. I'm going to invest in it. It's too affordable not to. Just sayin...

I always say get the best sharpening system that you can afford to get because when you learn to sharpen well you will get so much more joy from the knife hobby than you thought possible.

Thanks Harry, I don't plan on taking that out - I did skip that footage on the fixed blade video I did yesterday but that was for other reasons and won't become the norm. I am convinced that there are enough folks that want the measurements so I will keep providing them, especially since many knife stores get the numbers wrong and even some manufacturers have what I think are big errors on their websites.

If you are reviewing a knife for yourself or for others, you will have to get more informations out of the knife as much as you could and that includes sharpness of the knife.. About Kevin Cleary, he is okay but not my cup of tea.
@CanadianCuttingEdge6 жыл бұрын
Could you describe more clearly what you mean? Is there information about the knife that I am missing?
@olivierm.13536 жыл бұрын
Hey Jake, I love your reviews but kinda disagree that cut tests are pointless for a review. I fully agree that the blade sharpness is expandable, but: - I like not having to sharpen my knives out of the box. - Cutting tests will not only show how sharp the blade is, but also how good the blade shape is at slicing - Also, factory sharpness tells about how much the maker cares about details, it's part of the finish. Now we don't need to see you slice through stuff, but a quick feedback on how sharp / regular the edge was out of factory sounds as relevant to me as blade centering.
@kidbach6 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly concur.

I believe I do exactly what you ask for in your closing sentence. If cut tests were the only information that a reviewer gives and if I were to be one of those reviewers and then left that info out then I would indeed be doing a major disservice to my viewers. I believe I give a WIDE variety of information that will tell a person if the knife is well built and if the makers care about production quality. Several bits of info that I give are extremely rarely ever given by other reviewers. Grind angle of the final grind and the thickness of the edge behind the grind - info which I believe should tell the viewer much MORE about the blade than a cutting demonstration will. They don't cover these things In part because reviewers tend to copy each other and they haven't seen that info talked about before so they don't realize how important it is. I believe I provide the information you want to have about a company and about the knife without showing cutting. I am not saying that I will never show cutting, but not all that often. I get no complaints in videos where I don't show cutting, just when I mention that I won't show cutting. It's funny, I get people commenting about how it is good to stop showing cutting and others want it - a reviewer can never satisfy everyone so I make a point of satisfying myself - If I believe I have given good honest and clear information that will help a person decide if they want to buy a knife then I have done my job.

@@CanadianCuttingEdge Sorry, I realize by reading my message again that I didn't make my point clear enough. I support the idea of not doing cut tests during the review. They are mostly boring and not proving shit. I just wanted to clarify that I believe the information given by such tests matter, but don't need to see them happen. A simple verbal feedback is perfect :) Going further, I am also thinking about measurements. I don't find it too interesting to look at. A simple picture of the knife next to a ruler and with some text summarizing the details in both pounds/inches and grams/mm would be perfect and from my point of view more interesting to see commented than the real time measurements.

I always appreciate some comments about sharpeness. I have bought knives that appeared to be un-sharpened and others which were impossible to sharpen given the blade grinds. There blades needed a whole rethink before it could be sharpened. If I had less tools I may expect/need a knife to work out of the box. I trust your judgement Jake, just give us what is important.
@CanadianCuttingEdge5 жыл бұрын
A knife should work well out of the box. You are totally correct. I like to offer some commentary about how easy it will be to correct sharpening problems, but that is more of a current emphasis that might now be present in many of my older videos. It is important for the potential customer to know if they will be able to make the knife function well for them without too much effort or not.

Hey Jake, your links to fastech, are they US based or out of China? Just trying to estimate shipping times to my state if I order from them. Its taken over 3 weeks to get my knives from Gearbest, was wondering if its about the same for timing?
@CanadianCuttingEdge6 жыл бұрын
FastTech is in China. they ship out of a number of countries, often Singapore is on the package of knives that I get from them. Shipping will be SLOW, usually just a little faster than GearBest but not by a lot.
