Short answer is that the story is bad and the rest is fine Long answer: sly 4’s story and characters does not hold a candle to the trilogy, even the first game was simple as it was was better structured and had more heart behind it. I really liked the ancestors but the main gang just weren’t right, They’ve just been flanderized into being more simplistic characters compared to their development in the trilogy. And I hate the “””twist”” with Penelope being such an asspull that didn’t need to happen other than being way to add drama when the trilogy didn’t need to pull a cheap and senseless stunt like that. I don’t hate sly 4, I do like, it but sanzuru clearly didn’t understand the characters enough to write a good story line Sucker punch originally had.

Wasn’t a fan, stories of the first 3 felt like a well written saga, starting with the protagonist being cocky and out for revenge, then looking to seal the deal to ensure that what made him an orphan never happens again, all while being followed by two people who are willing to do anything for him. All culminating with a finale game where sly comes to terms with the costs of pursuing his profession, and how it leaves the people he cares about with no position to branch out, since they were intertwined with Sly’s journey. So he stopped, left Bentley and Murray the entirety of his thieving fortune, knowing both were capable enough to keep the wealth safe. as well as that, Sly himself can branch out from his field also, not being teathered by revenge, or driven by a bunch of dead ancestors and their heritage. instead he does what he wants to do, not following in his fathers footsteps, no matter how stimulating he finds the act of theft he knows the damage that can cause. Sly 4 started in a glorious fashion. It shows how people can’t disobey their roots that easily, it’s what makes them function as individuals, this applies for Sly, Bentley, and Murray. but even with that, it doesn’t feel like it was built upon come the climax, it’s as if nothing was learned from the past 3 adventures, Bentley and Murray follow sly, a man who has brought them to a place of incredible danger, repeating the cycle all over again.

@@marioandultrachap Except the game does a terrible job at delivering this message, heck it was basically ignored after the first chapter. They should've gone for an Uncharted 4 approach of this message. Where the protagonist eventually became so buried in the adventure that he became reckless and the supporting cast eventually made him look at how idiotic his actions were. That didn't happen at all in this game. But rather everyone acted the same throughout the game (rather than Sly being a lot more cocky and annoying, Carmelita being a lot less head-on and tough, Murray being way more whiny, and Bentley being deliberate) aside from the very short, forced and rushed character arcs that Bentley and Murray experienced. It also doesn't hurt to mention that Sly wanting to return to being a thief doesn't make any sense and completely craps on his arc throughout the trilogy.

Short Answer: No. Long Answer: Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was a relatively ambitious title that had a great gameplay balance/set-up, character abilities, challenges, and some memorable moments. It had a decent story that could have easily started off a secondary trilogy, and just looked, felt, and sounded great when it came out. With that said, I left off on an aggravating cliffhanger, and changed a beloved character for the worse, almost rehashing a previous story in the process, while also putting a massive strain on the relationship between Carmelita and Sly. It was a worthy addition to the series, and if Sanzaru would have been given the green light to go ahead with a DLC story or sequel, we could have seen even better. It is, by and large, a rough diamond, but a diamond none-the-less.

What we need is a spin off game that purely focuses on the ancestors. Meaning we play exclusively as them in their lives. They are an important part of the lore of sly and thieves in time did not show that nor give the credit to the mystery built up in previous games especially the finale of 3. @@grimlockgreg3063 "and at least they gave some reason why" What the heck is that supposed to mean? "TAKE NOTES SLY 3" At least Sly 3 outclassed Sly 4 in every way. Giving the characters a very plausible ending that they deserved, way better villains, a WAY better story, far better characters, a WAY better antagonist, better boss fights, better unlockables, and, overall, better gameplay. At least in Sly 3, Sly wasn't an arrogant, cocky selfish brat who didn't know how to take situations seriously and stand-up for himself. At least in Sly 3, Sly showed incredible respect and honour for his ancestors, yet in Sly 4 he was pretty whiny about them. At least Sly 3 took the story in a WAY better and more understandable direction, rather than placing the characters in a very garbage and unnecessary plot so during the end our characters learn absolutely nothing. Also, the climax is a big joke. I don't feel sad at all. In Sly 4, Sly went from being a kind righteous person to being one of the worst characters ever. To a point where I kind of rooted for El Jefe during their boss fight.

@@grimlockgreg3063 So? The bosses sucked in Sly 4 since they were outlandishly annoying and they weren't threatening at all. El Jefe is the only good boss, since he retains the classic charm that the bosses in Sly 1 did and because his actor, Nolan North, did a pretty good job as him. He's funny, threatening and cool. Toothpick is bad. His backstory is pretty ordinary and cliché, but he's annoying, unfunny, and really unthreatening. He ditched the original-charm that El Jefe had and his attempts for humour fell completely flat. His boss fight was mostly a rip-off of Raleigh's boss fight from Sly 1 and his ending was VERY anti-climatic. Grizz was the same, but his backstory is a lot more interesting and he retains the classic-feel of Sly 3's bosses, but then all interest was wasted when we learnt his true intentions. His rapping-stuff is pretty funny for me, but as a whole, he isn't that good. His boss fight is so damn annoying and repetitive and is a rip-off of Sly 3's Opera-Scene and Sly 2's Dance-Scene-ish. I could make a 1 hour-long video as to why Penelope absolutely SUCKS as a villain, but not for the sake of this. Ms. Decibal is a blatant rip-off of Dimitri, only difference is that Dimitri was interested in art. She's not funny, unthreatening and very annoying. Especially when she whines like a baby. Her boss fight is cool though, I liked that. Even if it is just a mixture of Rajan and John Bison's fight-ish. And then there's Le Paradox, he's the 2nd worst villain. Penelope beats him by a long-shot, but Le Paradox is still awful. He isn't threatening, his motivations don't line-up nor do they make sense, he's annoying and was a waste of time. He did NOTHING throughout the game. He didn't steal the canes, he didn't design the time-machine, he didn't fight the gang, he didn't tamper with the time-periods, nothing. And the game LITERALLY says this! His boss fight was... OK. It was fine. But it was a terrible way to end the series. The fight is so easy that I'd consider it a challenge to get HIT! And wow. What a way to end the series, with a boss fight so easy that you could multi-task. The build-up wasn't good, the fight wasn't that good, and the conclusion was awful.

@@grimlockgreg3063 Now, let's check-out Sly 3's bosses. Don Octavio is pretty good. He has his own unique charm, he's threatening and his boss fight is pretty cool. First its an opera-challenge, where Bentley hilariously competes against Octavio, all the while Sly is slicing the ropes holding a light, meanwhile they're both waiting for Octavio to get under the light, they cut it, but Carmelita destroys it, and Octavio manages to escape! BUT, then we enter an awesome canal chase where we shoot Octavio's motor and he crashes right back where we started. Then he blows up some houses with the detonator and then we're shown that he's freakishly fast in combat! Then Murray enters the ring, we fight him while travelling through the city, and then he finally falls. THAT is awesome. While his motivation doesn't make that much sense, his fight was awesome and he as a whole is a pretty cool villain. The black mask is weird... I don't really like it all that much because it's pretty weird... And it does get pretty annoying over-time, but the missions it's in, are awesome, mostly. Remember the Lemonade Drinking contest? That was one of the best things I have ever played. As a whole, it's a decent villain, obviously not that good. But at least it's threatening and its design is pretty nice. Penelope (or Black Baron) is like Octavio. But doesn't really get as much screen-time as Octavio and is kind of forgotten a number of times. But we're given enough information about him (or her I guess). She rigged the aces flight competition to win every time and was extremely corrupt. But then we learn she only dawned the disguise to enter the aces flight competition because she wasn't "qualified", and then she joined the team, how nice. Her boss fight is awesome too. I love the way it takes place in the air and how it transitions from a dog fight to a fist fight on the wing of a plane. So Black Baron's pretty cool. Don't really need to discuss Panda King, but General Tsao brings me mixed thoughts. He isn't bad, but he's not all that great. His voice is too off for me and he does get pretty annoying at times. But he shines in his own places, not only is he pretty threatening, but his boss fights are awesome. I don't mind the dragon fight all that much, it's fine. But the bamboo forest fight, was excellent. So he has a pass, and his backstory is pretty emotional, especially for the contrast he plays to the Panda King's alter-ego. Lefwee is good. He's very threatening, smart, cool and pretty funny at times. I love his temper, his voice actor does a solid job, he isn't annoying, etc. His boss fight is awesome and I love how much of a threat he's seen to by the gang and by the public. His climax was daunting and very earned and he was very evil. I really like Lefwee. Dr. M is the best villain. I don't want to get too in-dept with him, but he is insane. Hell-bent on feeling manipulated and betrayed by his former gang, especially Sly's father. Playing as such a contrast to Sly's gang and Sly's family, as well as tampering with Sly's emotions, talking trash to Murray and being outsmarted by Bentley. His fort being a very dark and secluded mad-scientist-like structure, making it all the more daunting as well as making him very threatening... Surviving countless near-death experiences, such as surviving from falling hundreds of feet in the air, being electrocuted by high voltage electricity, passing through the Cooper-Vault, surviving being under-water while controlling a giant Angler-Fish, etc. He's awesome. Easily the best villain. He's very threatening, he's awesome and the contrast he plays to the gang and the way you can feel the heart-break in his soul is daunting... His boss fight was so earned, and it is pretty challenging. Making it all the more daunting and making you wish he won't win. Then he is finally crushed under tons of rubble. He spent most of his life trying to crack the Cooper-Vault and discover its fortune, and he was done... Now, compare Dr. M to Le Paradox. Did Dr. M do nothing? Heck no, he almost killed Sly, he humiliated Dimitri, he tampered with Sly and his gang's emotions, and built a very secluded island that not even Bentley knew how to break into at first. Was his boss fight easy? No. It was pretty challenging, his movement was very unpredictable and he was pretty strong, keeping you on your toes and strategising with the gadgets that you picked up throughout the gang. Was Dr. M unthreatening? No. With all of the deformed supernatural-like animals he had created, his island's structure, his will to murder his own minions, his feats and technology make him very threatening. Were his motivations implausible? No. They weren't. He felt so betrayed and manipulated by his former gang that he came to abandon them and try to steal the glory for himself, or at least have a hint of it... Is he annoying? No. For reasons I've already hinted. There. That's why Sly 3's villains still trump over Sly 4's villains. El Jefe can live up to some of them, but everyone else falls very flat and are a waste of time.

I think one way to “fix” some of the plot would be that in Sly 5 (if it gets made) it starts off in Egypt and down the line the reason Penelope betrayed Bentley and the gang, she was put under a faulty mind control device by someone who hated Bentley, like some evil rival or something.

Mind control would actually work perfectly, since Ms. Decibel was a hypnotist herself. Explaining Penelope's strange twist in character over being under the influence by Decibel's music would had worked amazingly well to the point where I'm surprised they didn't do it. If it's a matter of wanting to create conflict in Penelope's character, they could say there was small a part of her deep down that did feel like Bentley was focusing too much on Sly's vault over anything else, and the hypnotism just brought out that in a far more extreme way than she ever wanted, and it makes her afraid of just how far she might go.

I honestly really like thieves in time, the only part I really dislike is... well yeah, bob. I liked Ryoichi's whole style of basically being the basis for what sly would become in the future, while still having his own long jump to make him unique, especially with the faint mystical/spiritual vibe to it. I enjoyed seeing a cooper actually using a gun with Tennessee. Bob was just super lame, it feels like he's supposed to be a strong Cooper, but it falls flat because he isn't even that strong, his climbing was noteworthy, but it really slows down the gameplay. I honestly didn't mind Sir Galleth, I like his thing of destroying obstacles, but it fells like a missed opportunity to not have him have a move to do it to obstacles on ground level as well. Salim was fun as a character, but he didn't really bring anything to the table, he just felt like a reskinned Sly, like his climbing fast is cool, but then Sly gets the thief outfit that allows him to do the same thing by slowing down time, and unlike the previous games when you slow down time in this one sly is able to move at full speed, it was a huge missed opportunity to not have the rest of the 40 thieves play a bigger role.

The only way I could see Penelope's betrayal working was if she was blackmailed into helping Paradox, and if she didn't, Bentley would be hurt, then when she gave Paradox the plans to the time machine, she was forced to continue to help as Bentley was still being used as the bargaining chip as with a time machine, Paradox could easily alter time to remove Bentley from existence. No. Also, just wanted to point out that why the second half feels weirdly bad, maybe it's because they got the first half done on schedule, but then they had a sudden time crunch that just started to make people lose focus on the broader picture, including the cut Egypt part
@noblesseoblige3194 жыл бұрын
The worst thing about Penelope is that at the end of sly 3, sly left them a literal ton of gold. They were already rich, and she was the one THAT MADE THE VAULT LOCKING THE MONEY AWAY how the hell can you turn greedy when you don't even touch the crap ton of money you're given, and make it impossible for people not tied to your new cooper gang to access? If you're gonna pull a evil villain twist, start out the game with someone stealing the entire vault, which should be literally impossible without the cane and whatever Bently tied his and murrys sections to. At least then we'd get hints of her greed and the fact that only she could break the vault since she helped make it

I have the super unpopular opinion that Sly 1 is by far the best game. I love the "one-hit" system. I love the intense, tight platforming. 2 felt to me like a bit of a mess. I found it really tedious, I REALLY hated playing as Bently and Murray, and I hated how the story tried to make it out that Clockwerk was LITERALLY fueled by hatred (I always interpreted his lines in Sly 1 to mean that hatred was his drive to achieve immortality through machinery, not the literal reason he was still alive). I thought 3's story was forgettable as hell, but I felt that the gameplay itself largely improved on 2 and was a much more enjoyable result. Honestly, Sly 4 is my second favorite game in the series. I totally agree that the story itself was ass, but I adored the visual overhaul and I liked how the platforming was more of a focus again, like in Sly 1. The worlds were just significantly more fun to explore IMO. Still not even close to Sly 1 (Sly 1 is easily in my top 5 favorite games of all time), but it was the first time I played a Sly game since the first one and didn't feel completely underwhelmed by it, even if it did have lower low points than 2 and 3.

I believe Sly Cooper 4 Thieves in Time was a good game And even though Sly has a hairatege of Theives I wasn't aware half of them were grumps when Sly introduced himself to them all except Bob the 1st Cave Cooper So if the chances in Sly 5 Sly's Comeback If Sly came across More Cooper Family members that could help Sly return to His time period we can only wonder and hopefully these other Cooper Family Members would have more friendly personalities

There are elements that I like about Thieves in Time, I actually liked Bob and his particular character arc as a contrast to the more limber Coopers we had seen, some of the sections had an interesting feel to it. I enjoyed the exploration element to the game levels and bringing back the clue bottles from Sly 1 & 2. My problems with the game where the sections of gameplay that relied so heavily on the axis motion controller junk with Bob's training mission being one of the only times it was bearable and I wasn't to fond of the character redesign on Carmelita making her so thin and twiggy along with the miniskirt. Still I'm hoping we get a new Sly Cooper game to hopefully continue the franchise or conclude it.

I agree with many of your points on Sly 4. Personally, Sly 2 is my favorite, but I actually rank Sly 4 over Sly 3. I feel like both tried to expand gameplay and story by adding more characters, but I felt the ancestors were more fun to play as. Also, I liked Sly 4's replayability better. Sly 3's challenges were boring to me. Another weak point of Sly 4 (and Sly 3 to me as well) is that there didn't feel like there was a cohesive story. In Sly 1 and 2, we had a reason to go after each boss, because it leads to our goal of collecting the Thieveus Racconous/Clockwork parts. Sly 3 and Sly 4 felt disjointed since we never really knew enough the big villian until the very end of the game. Sly 3 didn't show us Dr. M until the final levels. Sly 4 didn't give a motivation to Le Paradox until the final 2 levels. Also, the episode villians in Sly 3 weren't really connected to each other and it was never explained why the villians in Sly 4 were helping Le Paradox. Although Sly 4 had its weak points, I still rate it as a good game overall. As you mentioned, the gameplay early on was amazing. One thing I love about Sly is the cartoony environments and Sly 4 did a great job with the settings. It's a shame it will probably never be given a proper ending. It there ever was a Sly 5 or Sly Egypt DLC I would get it

While the Penelope “plot twist” is an asspull I personally think the plot started to go down hill when by sheer luck Murray’s necklace took them to exactly when they needed to go, but maybe the guru had a vision of where they needed to go so he gave Murray the necklace in sly 3? Art design wise I liked all but two things, carmelitas face (because it was wide and flat so it looked kinda off) and penelopes redesign, like in canon did she and Bentley invent a machine to give her that body? Or was it that she was young and hadnt fully gone through puberty yet? Or was her first stop in her time machine the 1950’s where she almost hooks up with a younger version of her mum but instead teaches her father confidence thereby making her hot in the future? Like she seriously looks like the fake picture she sent Bentley in sly 3 Despite these gripes I do really like the game and would buy sly 5 in a heartbeat

I love the sly cooper series with a burning passion. To say I hate the fourth game would be an understatement. It feels like a bastardization of the series, forgetting everything that made it great. Sharp, concise humour, competent writing, decent graphics(for 2002-2005) and the stylized cutscenes made it one of the best platformer series of all time. Plus it was also fun to play, with an easy moveset, and great controls. Sly 4, probably because it was made by different developers, is such a far cry from the series. The story and writing is terrible, the characters just don't feel right as opposed to where the series left off, and the need for artifacts to take you to different time periods is just a complete mcguffin. However, I can tell love and passion was put into the game, so i don't hate sanzaru. And graphically it's the best in the series bar-none. So honestly, I hate the game, and the writing is bad, but the game itself isn't godawful.

I guess I'm the oddball again, because Sly 4 seems equal to 3 and superior to 2. See, 2 kind of... plods at times? The pace is slow, basically. 3 didn't have that issue, but it DID abandon all of the explorative elements from 2 by dropping the clue bottles (which, to be fair, they weren't done well in 2 to begin with). 4 does this part exquisitely, and keeps the snappiness of 3's pace. It would for sure be the best... if it weren't for the twist/cliffhanger combo. Gameplay is the best, story is the worst, and while Gameplay is King to me, story still does matter. So better than 2, and close enough to 3 that I can't decide who's on top. And 1 is basically a Crash game, done about as well as Crash 2.

Honestly, I don't get why people think the Penelope reveal was an asspull. It fits her character pretty well, if you ask me. Penelope was never a nice person, in fact she was pretty much the opposite. Remember, she WAS the black baron. That wasn't a persona she was forced to play so, ever crime the baron committed, and there were quiet a few, was her own free doing. She served for years as a a cruel, ruthless crime lord, without anyone forcing her to do so. With that in mind is it so surprising that she might have grown tired of sly`s honorable thief thing and that she betrayed them like that? The only reason she joined the crew in the first place was her attraction to Bently, and the idea she could win him over by getting rid of his "bad" influence is a very real and human thing to do. So no, not an asspull at all, if you actually think about it.

Gameplay wise, Thieves in Time is amazing, and very much in touch with the original trilogy. Story wise, I agree it's much weaker than the other games, especially with what became of Penelope and how the game ended. Sanzaru could've avoided this game having such a backlash by giving a more conclusive ending instead of a cliffhanger. When trying to revive a franchise, the 'last' thing you want to do is leave a cliffhanger after one film/season/game, because you can't predict the success or failure of such a revival, and this game failed big time. But if you take away Penelope and the cliffhanger, the story is pretty good, if a bit weaker than the earlier games. I definitely enjoyed "Go West Young Raccoon", I admit.

Some bosses used nicely the stuff that you got on that place that other games always didn't use as all extra was pretty much making things easier or mandatory to buy. Extra stuff was fun to find and bottles came back as they really listened fans. Even last fight was really pushing buttons right time was really meh but before that they were really fun. Story is big meh but I don't play this game so much for story that it really didn't ruin my experience even it damage it (especially end). I loved it. My only issue was I was expecting La Paradox to turn out that he would become Clockwerk as both have a deep hatred of Sly's family and La Paradox could build an owl mech suit to disguise himself that progressively becomes more mechanical and fused to Paradox by the time of Sly 1. It could've been one of those "hero created their worst enemy" things. They could potentially still go that route in a sequel if Paradox has an artifact that could allow Bentley and Murray to reach Sly in Ancient Egypt and would trade it for his freedom, which Paradox uses to build another time machine/steal Bentley's and get his plan on track without needing a crew, i.e. Becoming Clockwerk. The story would focus initially on saving Sly then catching up with Paradox. Paradox is able to escape to become Clockwerk but the final fight cements his hatred into the blackness the Cooper family fears later in time.

I played Sky 4 and I thought the change was ok until I realized there were so many weird changes that made Carmelita not like the original trilogy one, the animation was strange because I liked the comic clips that explained the storyline. The ancestors were cool from the beginning and then it went down hill. The Black Knight story why Penelope she left had plot holes everywhere. The end left me hanging for more but the Egypt thing should’ve been resolved with a 5th game or this game shouldn’t have been developed in the first place. If the fifth game does get done, and I hope it does so I can see how it ends for good, let’s give it a proper send off.

I've only seen walkthroughs of the games, but I do feel that there's some potential wasted. Caveman "Bob" Cooper - To be honest, not exactly the sneaky sort (no pickpocketing), but I could see him sharing Murry's "Lift 'em and Shake em'" move. Carmelita - She could have more missions, which would let the player use her more. Now, while I don't see her pickpocketing, as she's a law enforcement officer, I could see her "searching for evidence" after apprehending a target with a "Detain" move. Also, maybe run into a couple of *her* relations, with her relations having their own odd relationships with Sly's counterparts - some are friends, some are worthy/honorable enemies, and maybe a few that make Sly and Carmelita blush, as they can read between the lines where the pair is concerned.

I’ve been a huge Sly fan since the original trilogy, so I can give my thoughts. It’s true that Sly 2 and 3 were better games, but Sly 4 was still a great game for a sly fan. I have so much fun playing that game and I even put it as my game of the decade (it’s not the best game of the decade, but it’s my favorite game). The biggest issue I have with it is the length of it. I thought because the game came out a long time after the originals and it was on a newer system, that we would get a massive game, but they had to make it small so it would fit on the Vita and I hate that decision. I would say this game is shorter than both 2 and 3 and that’s inexcusable. Also I agree with the last 3 ancestors not having any interesting game play. The first two were fun to run around the over world and play with their unique styles, but the last three weren’t. After you get some power ups for Sly, it’s actually less fun to play those last 3 ancestors. Their gimmicks were only made to work with certain obstacles that were put in the world, where the first two ancestors could be used anywhere at anytime. When you get the slow down time ability for Sly, you can climb those robes made for Salim, making him useless. Another minor complaint is I felt like Murray and Bentley were put to the side. I understand they wanted to focus on the new characters but Murray and Bentley barely had any missions. I think that extending the game could have helped that. Overall, I do love this game, and I’m hoping that the PS5 will be able to play it.

Something about the movement felt off in Sly 4 and it felt wrong to me. In the earlier games it was much smoother and it really made you/Sly Cooper feel like a master thief, but it felt a lot more rough in the fourth game to me and that turned me off.

I definitely agree your point about Sly 4. While recently played through levels, it feels the game is quite mixed. I need to talk about it’s pros: The cutscenes were very well-animated, graphics look very phenomenal As for the cons: Penelope becomes too out-of-character Writing becomes lackluster
