This video just saved me. I purchased a CD from Japan and used DHL as the courier, they charged me additional $25 CAD for the import/taxes and I decided to try the self-clearance. DHL has a page for self-clerance and they responded within 24 hours, provided me all the documents I need to submit at the CBSA. DHL informed me that I need to self-clear my shipment within 48hours. Went to CBSA in Vancouver and I just paid $3.33 CAD for my $27.78 CAD item, there was no line when I got there and it was a quick transaction. Took a picture of the document from CBSA and sent it to DHL then they got back to me within a couple of hours telling me that they will deliver my shipment. Thanks a bunch!

Great video. This week I had a delivery coming in from the UK. DHL wanted to charge me the tax and a $17 brokerage fee. On top of that they also wanted to charge me $56 because there was more than 5 lines in the invoice. In total they wanted $141, after searching the web I found out I could self clear. I’m also in Canada and have done the same process as this video describes. Super easy to do and my $141 DHL charge turned into $24 clearing the package myself, CBSA where super helpful and told me to spread the word about this process. We are basically being held to ransom by these courier companies because people are not aware that they can self clear.

Hello! This video was super helpful. I help run a small company (USA) to where we ship via FedEx to customers in Canada pretty regularly, and to be honest, I had no idea that customs fee were so high! After shipping a package, we would get bills/customs fees in the mail that would get bounced to us if the customer did not pay duties on their packages. Is there a better way to serve our customers without FedEx charging so much? Or do we need to tell each of our customers that they should fill out the form in your video? Any advise would help!

Being upfront about the shipping company's "clearance fees" would be a good start. Notifying customers that they can self clear and providing them with access to the info they need would also help. The best thing is to make sure that shipping with USPS (not UPS) is an option. USPS will hand stuff off to Canada Post, Canada Post will clear the package and only charge the applicable duty and tax.

I live in Texas and I have an etsy shop and occasionally ship to Canada. I must say shipping to Canada is so incredibly frustrating. The first time I shipped something to Canada the website I use for shipping gave me notice regarding fees I never heard of and if I wanted to use the global advantage program, I didn’t have a clue what that was either. What I did know was if I shipped a package to Vermont via USPS it would cost me about $18. The same package would cost $46 + whatever fees by simply crossing the boarder into Quebec. All I could think of was, is this disfunction normal? Apparently so! Thanks for your help understanding how shipping in Canada works, I feel for y’all! I also understand now why the first package I shipped to Canada got hung up in customs and took forever to make it to the customer. As a seller in the US what can I do to make receiving the package easier for my Canadian customers?

FedEx once sent me a bill of $680 for $800 package. That was about 5 years ago in Ukraine, I was restocking inventory. Mind you, I have already paid ~$200 for shipping. Duty in Ukraine is 10%. You shouldn't have to pick it up from their warehouse in most cases. Once you get the documents from them, and you send them your B15, they should make another delivery attempt. I would call back and be very direct that you're still waiting for the documents and that it is time sensitive.

Most marketplace now should charge import fees - Australian order things from overseas, if it's less than $1k it will just charge 10% on the purchase on either eBay/Amazon. This way anything less than $1000 will just pass through custom without checking and directly to customer. Canada should do the same. Europe does the same already but sometimes hiccups does happen.

Good video, thanks for posting. May I suggest opening a mail box in the US if practical. It costs nothing. You pay merely a few bucks to receive a parcel. Then declare at the border. I found that on only 1 in 3 occasions did I pay duty or tax. It boils down to how much it costs CBSA to collect. Also, fill up your tank, buy groceries and a 12 pack of beer or 750 ml bottle of wine on each trip. CBSA will know about the gas etc. Again it's not worth its while to bother you.

Brokerage fees are not a scam. Brokers use the tariff code provided by the CBSA from the CBSA website to determine how much duty you need to pay. The problem is the agent choosing that tariff code is wrong the majority of the time. This is why duty is lower when you go directly to a CBSA officer, they’re picking the correct code for you. Clothing and shoes items are mostly 18% duty when they’re not under CUSMA aka NAFTA. Also, yes personal shipments have a lot of duty exemptions.

After some arguing I finally learned I literally had a CBSA office 10 minute walk from me that I could get the proper stamps. The kicker? I was below the threshold for any taxes/duty. So didn't have to pay an extra dime. But now UPS is saying it's late because I didn't use their broker service. In other words, the 4 day delivery I paid for became 6 days because I wouldn't fork over an additional $30!?? Talk about scheming!!! 🖕

I’m so mad at myself. I ended up paying $31 in fees for an order that I already paid $25 in shipping. And than I realized that under the price breakdown GST was only about $3 and duty was 0. So they scammed out an extra $28 from me.

I was just charged another 30 dollars for a 120 dollar poster. This is absurd, DHL is literally charging me 30 dollars to clear a POSTER through customs. Unbelievable.

Thanks so much for this video ! I have a few high priced items coming in from Japan and I’m also in Edmonton. Do you think I could just go straight to the dhl service point to give them the b15 and pick up my package since it’s also by the airport ?

I paid $51 USD to ship $120 USD paper manual by UPS-USA with the "International Worldwide Expedited" and it said "These services include the Brokerage Fee in the label cost". My understanding is I paid the brokerage with that $51 USD, so I'll just need to pay the customs fee when it arrives. So it arrived and UPS charged me $44 CDN and their invoice/paperwork shows $21 CDN for customs, But the rest is outright thief as a fake "C.O.D. brokerage fees" charge. And UPS-Canada does Not want to discuss how they just robbed me and won't refund the brokerage I already paid to UPS-USA. This is the 5th time UPS-Canada tried to double-bill but I wasn't home to refuse the package.

On the last step which is waiting for package 😂, how long did it take for them to release or process it and deliver the package. I am 3 days in now after I got confirmation that they got my B15. And thanks for all this info, saved me $200.

I have Canadians bought my products and I'm tempting to just declare it lower than $20 and as gift to help out the parcel receiving process. Should I? Real value is around CAD 27-81. The type of postage I use - Australia Post should get handled by Canadian post but I see they still charge you CAD 10 for brokerage fees.

Thank you for your helpful video. In my case, FedEx already left me the package at the door, and two weeks later, I got an invoice in the mail asking me to pay more than $100 for a $350 package. What’s your advice?

What if you're shipping to an address that's not your own? What do you need CBSA wise? I live rural and have most of my shipping sent to my mother's house.

I recently received a package from FedEx and a couple weeks later I got a invoice from FedEx saying they covered the customs fees on my behalf, plus extra fees that they charge. This must be a new strategy to get me to pay them. Because it's too late for me to declare it on my own. So I guess I have to pay them an extra 20 plus 30 for the taxes and entry fee

Was it during covid? I think there may have been a drop package and collect later policy, but either way, fedex is the best, they charge a reasonable flat rate.

It’s funny, I’ve had the opposite experience with UPS and DHL. DHL has a self-clearance option right on their website. You put in your waybill number and email address and they’ll send you the appropriate documentation. UPS is not so streamlined.

Do you have any idea how to ship a package from the US to Canada in an affordable way. I'm talking about a somewhat heavy package like 40lb and for an item that's gonna cost me a couple hundred dollars I got quotes for 400-600$ just for the shipping which is insanely ridiculous. If you happen to have a solution I would highly appreciate it.

Instead of shipping couriers like FedEx, UPS, etc., have you looked into USPS? I asked a US seller to ship an item to Canada for me, I still had to pay the import custom duty fees but USPS' shipping cost was lower than the other. Let me know if it helps, or if you find an even cheaper way to ship.

Great video on a topic no one seems to know anything about in Canada. Just to clarify, when you contact the courier company you are asking for the waybill and commercial invoice or is a regular invoice sufficient? Also who completes the BSF715 Casual Goods Accounting Document, is it the CBSA based upon the waybill/invoice you provide or do you complete this?
@ItsStuder

You need all the stuff I mentioned in the video. Invoice, and also paperwork from the shipper that shows the invoice matches what's actually in the shipment. The B15 form is filled out by the CBSA and given to you after payment
