That you had nothing from Garage Project was a surprise. They are always high on my 'what do I want to try today' list. Tuatara and Panhead are my go-to's when out at dinner, etc., with Moa being my 'dozen to take to a barbie', mostly because it's good value. I don't mind a ParrotDog, either. They've surprised me and disappointed before, but more on the surprising than disappointing BRB is swill, as is Monteiths and anything from Macs. Their 'Green Beret IPA' is like craft beer for those without any taste or discernment.

You can get the brewers test beers at the bar in the Dunedin brewery and it’s always something very interesting. The Boundary Road brewery was built in Papakura in the early 90's, later that decade the towns water supply was the first in the country to be privatised by the now defunct council and still owned by the french multinational that originally brought it. The water wasn't great but now its poisonous to young children and myself, I got seriously ill from drinking Papakura tap water 18 months ago after moving back from Taranaki after 20 years where the local tap water is sourced from the local mountain. From the early 2000's Papakura tapwater is sourced from NZ's longest river the Waikato which every small town and dairy farm along the river dumps both raw and treated effluent into, also collects a lot of dead animals mainly the 4 legged farm kind but the odd 2 legged human kind and in certain areas the river is the most popular way of disposing cars usually stolen. The tap water is poorly dosed with chlorine, usually overdosed, on a chlorine scale 1 to 10 it's between 9 and Spinal Tap 11. The tap water isn't suitable for swimming pools, getting a truck that usually fills peoples rainwater tanks during summer to fill your pool is far superior. Bottled water is staple for low income families in Papakura, I also can't believe they have the gall to charge for it when most of NZ its free -well included with your rates/local taxes for you NA's. So if BRB is using the town water it could be the reason the beer tastes metallic.

This was a fun follow-up. Panhead, Tuatara and Emerson's were 'proper' respected craft breweries before being sold to Lion and Heineken. Generally the main reason these craft breweries sell to the big players is because of distribution; with most bars being aligned to the big beer companies (and only able to sell their beers), the only way to see real expansion and growth is to somehow get into those bars and restaurants, and the only way to do that is to be owned by them. BTW, your tasting notes for the Boundary Road (which is not a great beer, TBH) left me thinking that the beer was actually contaminated by iron, possibly from pipes in the brewery.
@donovankelly1210 ай бұрын
Thanks, Matt! Yeah I’ve been working on doing a deep dive into why breweries sell out and your absolutely right; money and distribution. Seems like it’s really competitive trying to get your beer on tap down here because of the amount of branded bars like Speights, Monteiths, etc. As for the boundary road beer I don’t think it was contaminated(I hope not lol), I’ve drank 2 more since filming this and the majority of the metallic flavour went away after 3 or 4 good sips. I’ve definitely had beers like that before so cheers to hoping I don’t get sick 😂 Thanks for watching and leaving this awesome comment 🍻

Re Mac's Gold - it was big like Monteiths back in the day and both ended up getting sold off to the bigger conglomerates. When Stoke brewery started back up I think they had some connection to the OG brewers of Mac's and so their beer was pretty close to how Mac's Gold used to be. But looking at their range now, maybe its a sign that NZ Craft Lager's just aren't that popular as they only have the Mid now and im not sure how well it compares to back in the day.

Out of the faux craft brews, Monteith's Golden Lager is my go to, but if its a scorching hot Far North day like today, a Monteith's Summer Ale slides down an absolute treat. I've had the Mac's Gold in the past and didn't mind it but I'd sooner pick up my trusty Double Brown than buy a box of those. Boundary Road Brewing was just round the corner from where I used to live. Not a place you'd go for a brewery tour shall we say....The brewery they're based in is also responsible for the war crime known as Ranfurly Draught, Woodstock Bourbon and Cola (first hangover I ever had, that was a bad bad time, also known as the OG court order in a can until that mantle was claimed by the 11% William Cody's, which you can't get anymore) and Vodka Cruisers (lolly water with a hit of locally made potato water and more sugar than a bottle of Coca Cola; its garbage)

Re the faux craft beers: most of them start life as genuine micro brewery craft beers. The locals get a taste for them so they grow, they get a bigger market, and eventually they get on the radar of DB and Lion & one or both of them offer a stupid amount of money that the founders of said beer would be stupid to turn down, and another upstart little brewery gets swallowed up by the corporate behemoth. A sad progression that I have no doubt happens all over the world in in many different industries.
@donovankelly1210 ай бұрын
Ah you couldn’t have said it better. There’s definitely a good amount of breweries in Canada that have been picked up by ABinBev and Molson Coors and now their beers are sold country wide and there’s more options at sporting events and concerts, so it’s not a bad thing. You just hope they get a good payout and don’t mess up the good recipes.
