Phil Collins brought a new dimension to the band. Maybe it was that dimension Anthony Phillips fell into and disappeared.

Yes those 3 epic songs are epic Hackett and Collins are a revelation to the band, this started their great run of 5 star albums, you should hear the remised versions from 2007 which greatly improved the production

Nursery Cryme is certainly a contender for being my favourite Genesis album

I like the first two Genesis albums, but this album takes things to a whole new level with the addition of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett! Great review Larry, I would give it an A- as well.

For me Nursery Cryme is an absolute MASTERPIECE. From the attacking mellotron chords and haunting Peter Gabriel vocals of the musical box all th way to the final crescendo of the fountain of silmacis. Harold the Barrel is a overlook clever song It IS about a mans suicide but the track still has a fun sound to it wich is kind of disturbing in a way. Seven Stones is has some of Gabriels best singing. Top 3 songs: 3. Seven Stones 2. The fountain... 1. The musical box Won't spoil my rating yet, but I will say that this album has grown on me and it has probably Steve Hacketts best guitar work. This record is close to my heart.

Hey Larry, great video! My ranking: 1 - Nursery Cryme (A-) 2 - Trespass (B+) 3 - From Genesis to Revelation (B-) PRODUCTION: B MUSICIANSHIP: A- COMPOSITION: A- LYRICS: A COVER: C+ (because the shadow and the strange perspectives) This is the first classic Genesis album imo. The addition of Steve Hackett and Phil Collins who replaced Phillips and Mayhew, was a great decision because these members suite the music and the attitude of Genesis very well. The band enlarges their complex longtracks and put in shorter, more catchy tracks as a counterbalance. The mellotron takes in a more important role, especially in "The Fountain of Salmacis" where the Mellotron strings symbolize water which would become a trademark for Genesis. Peter Gabriel´s lyrics become more and more intellectual. As a negative aspect I would add the immaturity and some weeknesses in the longtracks - especially in comparison to later albums. My three favourite songs: - The Fountain of Salmacis - what a killer track, A+ - The Musical Box - a bit overrated imo but still a great track - Harold the Barrel - underrated gem

Their first really good album, it's where they found their sound. (There is songs in the title instead of albums.)

Another great review! This album is one of my favourites by Genesis along with Selling England By The Pound and A Trick Of The Tail. The two new guys brought as Mr. Wikipedia says a new dimension to the group. I love all the songs but my favourite songs are The Musical Box of course, and The Fountain Of Salmacis with a stunning guitar solo by Steve Hackett. I think Seven Stones is the underrated gem on this album. The mellotron section at the end of it is beautiful!

My absolute favorites on this album are 1. THE Musical Box 2. Seven Stones 3. The Fountain of Salmacis . But like you said they are all great! A solid A for me! Parts of the Musical Box is pretty darn heavy musicallyl, don't you agree?.

Its strange in that my favourite Genesis albums have yellow colouring in their covers - Trick of the Tail, Selling England and Nursery Cryme. Salmacis is sung at around 1.45 though its difficult to clearly make out - its where the narrator's part is sung in unison with Salmacis' part - I only found that out by looking at the lyrics in the booklet and playing it through a few times. Totally agree that Genesis lost a huge part of their sound when Steve Hackett left, though for them that will have helped in their transition into the more streamlined, pop sensibilitied and wealth creator of Genesis of the 1980's. For those of us who grew up with them, Phil Collins was always a drummer first then a vocalist. I used to get annoyed with him when through the 80's and 90's he'd dismiss Prog, as did the other two to some degree as well, but I suppose that was just part of the overall marketing - distance yourself from that difficult and totally uncool style that was out of favour at the time. And as someone else said in the comments- if in any doubt about Collins' drumming just check out those Brand X albums he was on - he also did a fun big band live in Paris album in the late 90's.

I'm not a huge fan of Genesis but am trying to give them another chance by following the series. I own The Lamb and with the exception of like a half dozen songs, still can't fully get into it. I also have Selling England By The Pound, which I dig more. I do like several songs from the Phil Collins-led Era, even a song or two from Invisible Touch. Maybe I'll learn what I've been missing over the years

I'm impressed that you are a fan from the beginning. I've been one for a long time, but about 7 years later. It's hard to argue with your top 3, but I might put Harold the Barrel at no. 3 instead of Salmacis.

Just a great prog rock album. This where Genesis really came into their own. The musicianship is incredible, especially with the addition of Steve Hackett and Phil Collins to the band. And of course Peter Gabriel’s vocals are just iconic. I enjoy it from front to back.

Now this is the real Genesis with Collins and Hackett on board. The cover reminds me of Lew Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" with the croquet only darker. For me Tony Banks will always be the key player of the band. The entire Gabriel era is prime Genesis for me and I love Hackett's solo work as well. He kept on with the progressive genre, his solo albums are worth listening to. Loving this series.

Genesis really came into its own with this one. Hackett and Collins solidified Genesis as one of the greatest bands of all time. The Musical Box is one of the best openers. Production is a bit weak. I've always l Iiked the cover. Hogweed and Fountain are perfect. Nursery is my 5th favorite.

Great album. Like you I was hooked straight away. The cover is intentionally odd and unsettling I think, a bit like the Charisma label itself. Also the actual proper full sized, full fat record cover is much more impressive than the tiny CD covers.
