Supper’s Ready. One of my all time favourite songs and Foxtrot is my favourite Genesis album!! Great video Larry 👍

Their first of three consecutive masterpieces. If anyone on this channel HASN'T heard "Supper's Ready," do yourself a favor and listen to it. One of my favorite Genesis songs is "Time Table," which I think gets short shrift sometimes. This is a total A+ album. It won't be my favorite, but for the time being: 1) Foxtrot 2) Nursery Cryme 3) From Genesis To Revelation 4) Trespass

Hi Larry, very nice review as always. So far I have the same ranking like you: 1 - Foxtrot (A) 2 - Nursery Cryme (A-) 3 - Trespass (B+) 4 - Revelation (B-) PRODUCTION: A MUSICIANSHIP: A- COMPOSITION: A- LYRICS: A+ COVER: B+ (again strange perspective / interesting elements, suit the content but not combined well) What an a amazing album ... their first masterpiece imo. The mellotron intro of "Watcher of the Skies" and "Supper´s Ready" were so influential and progressive but the album as a whole piece impresses even more. The mystical atmosphere is increased and the lyrics reach perfection. The musical interplay still convinces, the production reaches a new level and supports both the complexness of the music and the mystical touch. There are contrasts between more complex and simple parts but different to Nusery Cryme Genesis achieves a mix of both sides in all tracks here. The biggest contrast is between the calm, short guitar piece "Horizons" by Steve Hackett (based on the prelude of Bach´s Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007 for cello) and the disturbing epic "Supper´s Ready". Nevertheless this album isn´t perfect in every aspect imo. The musical abilities of the Genesis members are not on the same level as those of Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Gentle Giant and Co. There´s also a lack in composition as the single parts of "Can Utility" and "Supper´s Ready" sometimes seem to be nailed together instead of being a logical continuation to previous parts. But these are more minorities. Overall an excellent album - just not perfect. My three favourite tracks: - Supper´s Ready - Can-Uitlity and the Coastliners - Get ´Em out by Friday - great narration and vocals by Peter Gabriel, also nice integration of flute and accordion

My mind was like "Please God Let He Be Joking". And my prayer was answered, and I feel so relaxed now.

1. Supper's Ready 2. Get 'Em Out by Friday 3. Can Utility and the Coastliners Steve Hackett's Foxtrot at 50 has vaulted this to my no. 1 spot of all Genesis albums.

You almost got me with Supper's Ready being your least favorite but I remember your Genesis Top 10 Songs video and you had it at number 1#. Overall it's one of the best classic prog rock albums of all time.

I used to have a recurring dream, and the soundtrack to that dream was "Can Utility And The Coastliners" What a masterpiece!

I was SHOCKED when you said that you really dont like Suppers ready. I was already like: "Sad he doesent like IT, but i guess I just have to accept it tho it will be hard." Okay but this album is yet another MASTERPIECE. I guess thats not a suprise tho. I love the cover. Love the bright colours and love how weird it can get. At least an A for the cover alone. The instrument that starts out watcher of the skies is by the way a mellatron. A mellatron is an instrument that was used a lot in the seventies progressive rock scene. Before prog it was used only on rare occasions, the first one of I know being the intro to "Strawberry Fields Forever" from you know what band, I dont have to tell... Top 3 songs: 3. Can utility... 2. Watcher... 1. Horizons (jk its suppers ready) Won't spoil my ratings of songs nor the album yet again ;) (Also thank you for warning for the curse word. I had my 2 year old next to me...)

My favourite is the next album, but Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme are very close behind...and, like you said Larry, the Live album is fantastic too. The album covers, for me, are superb, they really fit the music and I love the fact that on the back of the Foxtrot gatefold you can see in the distance the croquet game from the Nursery Cryme cover, very clever!

My top from this is: (Note: 0 to 10) 1) Supper's Ready (10.5) 2) Can Utility and the Coastliners (9) 3) Watcher of the Skies (8.5) 4) Get'em Out by Fiday (8.5) 5) Time Table (8) 6) Horizons (7.5)

The Genesis albums just keep getting better from here. I have a tough time deciding between this and Lamb Lies Down on Broadway as my favorite Genesis albums. And not gonna lie, you really had me going when you talked about “Supper’s Ready.” 😅 But that song is definitely one of the all time great epics of prog rock.

My second favourite Genesis album . The next one that you’re reviewing is my favourite . I hear about 4 different songs in Supper’s Ready . Sometimes I wonder how the album would sound if they would’ve recorded them as separate tracks . Sometimes I think it might have made the album even stronger . At any rate , it is a great song . The hidden gem on Foxtrot is Time Table .

That isn't the fox costume on the live album it's the Apocalypse 9/8 'Magog/Pythagorus' from Supper's ready, yes I wish this was on the live album too, it was recorded as well. This album is an A+ for me too. All the band were on top form and Gabriel's voice was so much improved. You had me too with Time Table as your favourite instead of suppers ready.

I completely agree with an A+ rating for Foxtrot. It's my favorite prog album of all times. When I bought Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot in the early 70's I cracked for Genesis. All my brothers and sisters too. Unfortunately It was on Buddah records and the pressage was atrocious. Later I bought the albums from english importation on Charisma. Much better. Preffered song: Can Utility and the Coastliners. Indeed Phil Collins' work on percussions is amazing and very inventive. I like Phil Collins more as a drummer (and probable composer) than a frontman/vocalist. All the 5 musicians are extraordinary. And when Steve Hackett left, it did no good for the already depleted Genesis by Peter Gabriel's departure. Nursery Cryme just a litte notch under Foxtrot (I give N.C. an A). Both are hard to topple. And With a A+, Foxtrot can be matched but not toppled.

This is my favorite Genesis album. Watcher is a great opener. Had me hooked right away. I like the cover. Supper's Ready is, of course, the big draw but love Can Utility. There's not a bad song on this one.

You had me going there. Surprised that you are a bit lukewarm on Selling England by the Pound. That has always been my favourite until I recently got the vinyl of Trick in the Tail, and now they are joint favourite

Larry, play again and again Selling England By The Pound. You'll appreciate it. In my opinion it features Hackett's best guitar moments in Genesis. Steve is shining on Dancing With The Moonlit Knight and Firth Of Fifth!!!

Yes for me 'Supper's Ready' will always be the #1 progressive song, there's no dislodging it. I love watching music reactors listen to it for the 1st time such as NicknLex. And the next 2 albums only get better, also A+ for me.

Am I correct in thinking that after Phil Collins' vocals being so prominent on Nursery Cryme, they're almost non-existent on Foxtrot.

Not familiar with their first 3 albums. FOXTROT was the first Genesis album I listened to back in the 70's. "Watcher Of The Skies" has always been my favorite Genesis song. And "Supper's Ready" is epic. Also like "Can-Utility And The Coastliners". Some of Gabriel's best vocals on that one.

Supper’s Ready took me several years (20) to totally get into. I especially love the last few minutes if it. I still need to get into the song at the end of side one. Still want to know the whole story on what the album cover is about✨✨have a great day Bro ✌️😄

This is where I enter the Genesis catalog. I think "Watcher Of The Skies" and "Supper's Ready" are great, and I like the other songs as well. I give "Foxtrot" a "B+". A very good album, but not excellent.

I highly recommend some of the more obscure Canterbury based prog bands. Like Caravan, Soft Machine, Egg, Hatfield And The North, Gong, National Health etc. sooo much good prog out there😃

Marvelous Gothic rock. Great, slightly disturbing cover. Not, however, as disturbing as seeing Gabriel in his fox costume.

All members expressed disappointment with that cover whereas most of them don't mind the Nursery Cryme artwork. It's definitely a superior album to Nursery Cryme as you sagely point out. Not my number one Genesis album but definitely a strong contender for number two. Cheers.

Yeah Genesis Live should definitely have included Suppers Ready. They did record it. I got the reissue of GL and instead of adding Suppers Ready they added some live tracks from The Lamb for some weird reason. Quite annoying!
