Hey there Grampie. I know the grief in changing handle grips. I changed handle grips on my cycle and the old grips must have been super glued. The old grips were kind of firm so it was a little easier to remove compared to what you encountered but there was glue on the metal to affix those grips. Man, it was a booger to remove all the glue. Fortunately, the new grips didn't need as much glue to reapply but I know your frustration removing the old grips. Glad you were able to get the old grips off without blowing a fuse. Hope the heated grips keep your hands nice and warm. I bought a pair of heated gloves that were powered by the battery. Nice and toasty. Man, before purchasing the heated gloves, my fingers were extremely cold like frozen french fries. Enjoyed a full-view and hope to see your new install. Have a good week. Don 👍🏽🙂 3/15/22

And oh, just another tidbit for ya, which you can easily monitor with your skills. I installed heated grips on my Polaris atv which I use for plowing. Electric winch raises and lowers the plow. Grips wired into a circuit which is live only in run. I found using headlights, winch a fair amount, and heated grips, the charging system was a little taxed, causing the battery to run down…..but then again we are all over taxed!!! Lol. Again, good luck and keep us posted👍. Springs a coming.
@GrampiesWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
How's she goin'? Thanks for this tidbit too!!! I have a winch, but don't use it very much. That is a concern though for the amount of power that the bike can make. I expect the Can Am can handle this load. There was a '12 vdc option' wire provided at the factory for connecting add ons, but you still have to watch the amount of current you are using. No one likes to be 'over taxed' eh!!! Thanks for the reminder!! Take care!!!

HEY MIKE, Your always up to something ole son. Living in the hi arctic when folks stared seeing hand warmers we all went crazy for them. I found a hot,wet towel wrapped around them worked well but at the same time like with chainsaw grips who would want to reuse the old grips so yup, Cut them off eh, LOL. For the really stubborn glue they make a product called "Goo gone" I get it at our local CoOp in the grocery part. Works great and paint friendly stuff too. Just spray it on and it will amaze you at how well it works. a bit of Vaseline when you are ready to push the new grips on and your set. The having them slip won't happen. Vaseline by nature is water soluble so just warm up that cloth again and it will draw the slippery stuff out with no need to use any glue to seat them in place my dear friend. Great to see you here this fine almost spring day eh.

Good job! Just add my experience for what it worth. I have had air pressure work sometimes. It appears your new grips have a smaller hole in the end…which may help to seal the air pressure, and expand the grips enough to get them on. Although I did not try it, some folks recommend hair spray…lubricant when it’s wet and sticky when it’s dry. I have a ski-doo work shop manual, in which they say to use a “special tool” placed over the grip to “drive” the grip onto the bar. These skidoo grips do have a plastic sleeve inside the rubber grip. Last thing you would want to do is damage the heating element…I do believe I used a block of wood and plain old water once to drive them on. Last tip I might suggest…make sure you orient the wires coming out of the new grip, where you want them, before pushing and installing the grip to the bar, because you probably won’t be able to rotate the grip once it’s in place. Looking forward to the next Grampies workshop! Good luck with the install!👍

On installing your new grips. Try using your air gun again. This time block the hole at the end of the grip with electrical tape and then inject air at the other end while shoving the grip on. The heat gun was a great idea and I thought it would work. Then the compressed air. I thought that would work. Then I realized the mistake: When you inserted the air nozzle under the rubber you were just blowing Hot Air, and everybody knows that blowing hot air never solves anything. LOL (I should know. I blow a lot of hot air with my comments most all the time! haha) Then I thought that breaking off the screwdriver was going to work, but that didn't do it either:) Sorry to see the knife come out but sometimes that's the only way. Now if you could only get your hands on some of the glue they used you'd be all set. That stuff seems like it would glue an elephant to the ceiling (but don't try that. I'd worry about your back!). Yes, Mike, you'll wonder how you got along without these warm grips after you use these for a while. I seem to remember something about using a lot of WD40 sprayed into the new grips and soaking there before putting poring out the excess, then you'll find that they will push on the tube much easier. Then when set up, the new grips will stick as good as the originals. My brother was a Mechanic at a Bombardier dealership for quite a few years, and he installed these very ones on my Can Am this way. How's she goin'? It was a battle the whole way to get those grips off. Even when I cut them, the remains of the grips and the glue was some hard to get cleaned up. I hope the new grips are worth it!! Thanks for the visit and take 'er easy!!!

Well that's interesting. I didn't know they made those heated grips. See you on the next one. :)

How's she goin'? Yes sir, heated grips are your friend around here. I think I must be getting old though as in past years I didn't mind the cold on my hands near as much as this year. Not any more though!! Thanks for the watch and take care!!!

I was hoping that you would have found the magic solution to taking the old grips off but I think you have confirmed that it is a waste of time trying. I am looking forward to seeing how you get the new grips on and fixed. As they are so tight I guess they need to be lined up before pushing them on
@GrampiesWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Hey there Joseph. The old grips sure were well glued and cutting them was what I should have done right from the start. Oh well, live and learn eh!!! I have the heated grips installed now and I don't want to spoil the next video but it was a challenge to get them on too. Thanks for tuning in and have a great day!!!

@@GrampiesWorkshop I am pleased you have them on, I always worry about getting things like that half on and not being able to get them off again. Looking forward to the next part

Quite the fight there getting those grips off and the bars cleaned up! I agree with someone else, try some "Goof Off" cleaner? Good luck with the rest of this project!
@GrampiesWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
How's she goin'? The Goof Off may have worked but I didn't have any. So I resorted to man's best friend, the Olfa knife!!! LOL When all else fails, cut it off. I was bummed to destroy the old grips as they were just like knew, but they had to go. Thanks for watching Brian and take care!!!

🤣🤣🤣 woopsy,,, knife straight down the length of the grip Mike, usually useless once off no matter how yo get them off. Out with the old, in with the new. The carb cleaner trick usually works too. That was some good glue!

How's she goin'? Yeah that poor screwdriver, I had it for a long time and now it's in the trash with the almost new grips I had to cut off. This was a bad day eh!!! LOL But the grips needed to go on and so that's what happens in the heat of battle. Thanks for dropping by the shop Steve and take care!!!

Hey Mike, This sure beats drinking hot Big J's Prune juice before going out riding! Boy those gave you some trouble getting them off. I think cutting them was the only choice. Looking forward to seeing them working. Take care

How's she goin'? Yes John, the grips couldn't be saved. They sure didn't want to come off!! But now it's onward and upward. Getting the new grips on will be a bit of a gong show too I expect, but I don't want to ruin the next video for you!! I never tried the hot Big J's Prune Juice. I should have tried it because it may have saved me a lot of work!!! LOL Thanks for the tip and thanks for tuning John. Take care!!!

I didn't have any acetone for getting the glue to release, so I used the old Olfa knife!! It took a lot longer but it worked. I was thinking of contact cement to glue them on, but I was afraid I would get the grip half way on and the glue would set up and there I would be with half a grip on the bar!!! LOL Merci d'avoir regarde Dave. Je vous souhaite une tres bonne semaine!! A la prochaine!!!
