David Casella, Earth Works Jax palm specialist discusses Phoenix canariensis, the Canary Island Date Palm, and its specific watering and fertilization needs for North Florida. Native to the Canary Islands and a Meditteranean climate these beautiful specimen plants are drought and moderately salt-tolerant although they need extra magnesium and potassium in North Florida due to our soil deficiencies. No irrigation is necessary for these beautiful conversational specimens.
Earth Works operates a retail Garden Center in Jacksonville and provides landscaping, hardscaping, water features, lawn care service, lawn spraying, and drainage solutions.
Proudly serving clients in Northeast Florida including Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, Ponte Vedra Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Nocatee, St. Johns, Amelia Island, Fernandina and St. Augustine.

I bought a one gallon two years ago. And now it’s bigger than the ones in your video. I live in Las Vegas. I use a EZ Flo fertigation in ground tank. And so it gets fertilizer every time I water. I also feed it Magnesium during the growing season. My neighbors complained about it being too small when I planted the tree. Now they walk by and say nothing because it’s huge. And all my neighbors planted them and spent more money on them. Where my palm cost $12.00. Love to send a picture.

Excellent aesthetic for the palm on your hand, oval trunk mass is almost symmetric. They are abundant here in Jordan, the Middle East. Great palm

I own about 15 of these trees in Jordan that are 8 to 10 feet high (Trunk Only). They are difficult to survive if they are removed from the original area where they were planted. I lost 8 to 10 trees out of 25 I bought. They were big though smallest was 8 feet

@@subeih Hello Murad, In reality they are not that difficult to transplant. The problem is ignorance, laziness, and greed of agri and landscape professionals ( hardly professionals..) in Jordan. They would sell it to you in the heat of August summer with a big yellow smile. Too lazy; hence they don't bother scooping a large enough rootball with the tree. 30 feet canary palms can be successfully moved with proper care. Regards

These palms are among the most dramatic and prestigious. Traditionally, if a property had one of these on it, the value would go up. Sadly, these majestic palms are under threat of Fusarium Wilt.

David, your suggestion on eliminating irrigation once established is key. 8-2-12 quarterly as well. What are your thoughts on dressing (staining) the trunk?

David. I have talked with you on comments of other videos a few times. Hopefully will get to come in and meet you soon. In the meantime.... These are very, very costly palms when you get the larger sizes. Are there warranties against diseases like fusarium wilt? I mentioned to you in another videos comments that I bought 2 small ones from a big box store and just over a year after getting them the wilt showed its ugly face on both palms. They were never pruned by anyone other than me and my tools were disinfected. So it was either in the palms when I got them or I have heard some bugs can transport it. Which COULD have happened but I never saw any palms near me with it.

When large Field Grown palms, like the Canary Island Date Palm and Sabal palmetto (Cabbage Palm) are transplanted and prunned they release an odor that attracts the Palmetto Weevil. If these palms are not sprayed/treated by the grower, the weevils can potentially harm the palm!

Wait, it grows in pots? How do you keep it from getting tall? I live in the tropics and sprouted some dates from seeds (no one commercially sell seedlings). Apparently dates can grow here despite all the water, I saw a vid of a farm here that have trees fruiting. They did grew the trees from seeds donated from abroad though, since no one really sells proper seedlings.

we have a lot of underground utilities here, are these roots on CIDP considered invasive?
@davidcasella2934
@davidcasella2934 3 жыл бұрын
Palm roots are not classified as invasive! Palms have a fibrous root system. The diameter of the roots are no larger than the diameter of a pencil. Most palms can be planted next to walkways, driveways, foundations of structures, next to pipes and wires without causing any damage or disruption.

Good evening, which palm is more cold hardy the Cid or the Sylvester palm? Also does the Cid grow faster than a pindo and the Sylvester? Thank you
@davidcasella2934
@davidcasella2934 3 жыл бұрын
The Phoenix sylvestris grows at a faster rate, given the ample conditions versus the Phoenix canariensis! I would say the Canary Island Date and Pindo Palm grow close to the same rate! Butia capitata (Pindo Palm) is the most Cold Hardy, then second would be the Phoenix sylvestris and lastly the Phoenix canariensis! Typically palms that have the glaucous fronds (powdery silver wax) tend to be more cold tolerant than the green versions!
