Interesting note about Alice Roosevelt: she used to sneak to the roof of the White House to smoke. This, along with her other escapades actually caused government officials to approach the President about his daughter. His wonderful reply was: "Gentlemen, I can either control Alice or run the country. I cannot possibly do both!" LOL!!!

Hi Bailey! I loved today's episode of dark history. I recently learned of the real life monsters inc and thought it would be a cool video idea. There was a power plant in Vermont that would build doors and break into peoples homes to steal electricity. Allegedly, people who were fired would be forced to walk through a door that led to the Himalayas and were never seen again. I'm not sure what the power plant was called but it's super shady. Hope you're doing well!

Gossip is definitely more accessible when the internet and social media began. At least most people with any logic knows now that you cannot always believe the information that is written and to take information with a grain of salt and research the facts before believing things they read or see on social media.

Did you know that the son of DeWolf and Hedda Hopper was actor William Hopper? He is best know as playing detective Paul Drake in the original Perry Mason series. Okay because I got hyperfixated on 'colonel' and had to look it up. Essentially we took the word from the French coronel (and we used to pronounce it that way). But in the 1580's they changed the spelling from r to l because it's originally a Latin/Italian word (collumna/colonnella), but the old pronunciation prevailed over the spelling with the L. Of course this was hundreds of years ago, so the pronunciation continued to change, but we never changed the spelling.

The classic movie Ziegfeld Girl, starring Lana Turner, Hedy Lamarr, James Stewart, and Judy Garland, has a gossip rag featured in it, the kind that doesn't specifically name anyone, but EVERYONE knows who it's talking about. If you haven't seen this movie, I super highly recommend it, it's a no-holds-barred look at the less glamorous reality of 1930s show business.
