Standards of living are decreasing I'm an Civil Engineer by trade a specialist Sub contractor. My career has meant I've worked with every major house builder in Britain in most cities and towns. I've worked with all levels from the lowly ground labour man all the way up to the directors of these companies. I personally have designed at least 30 homes a week, over a year that's over a thousand. Everyone in the industry says the housing growth has never been so good. Building in quantity and also profits. The housing companies cannot grow/expand fast enough to meet the demand! Most marketing execs and salesman often sell the home before its even built, they go like hot cakes. Reading the housing industry articles we build on average 200,000 a year. All different types and sizes. And that's a lot. So the question has to be asked why is Demand so high? Where did I come from? And Why Now? Demand because the population is growing. In 2011 the last census counted 63.26million In 2022 it's projected at 67.44million. 4.18 million difference. For scale That's the size of four Birminghams in 10 years. Bloody hell! So the next logical question is why is the population growing. Is it due more children being born or immigration? The clearest way to assess this is to look at birth rates. For a constant/stable population without in or out migration requires 2.1 births per woman. This mean it takes two children to replace two parents in the statistics. 0.1, is a bit more because as it accounts for deaths in the long term. (Look up some videos on population demographics if need to know more). The UK birth across those 10yrs has been less than 2.1, now it's 1.64 children per woman. In conclusion we can blame politicians, companies, house builders, councils etc. But the fundamental reason. Immigration is causing the housing problem and why your children can't afford a home to start a family themselves. And I'm not going to lie. Building stuff is what I do. General construction everywhere is growing not just housing. All because of the larger population. Roads, sewers, telecoms, everything we have it's always more, more more. We don't know how live within our means. I truly think governments have been using immigration to reduce wages (the immediate standards of living) with the hope that home Equity values will increase. Because we like our homes to go up in value & we release equity to compensate for our awful state pensions. However this is at the expense of the youth and young families. All of our governments only do shortermism.

Bet you've been building all those houses outside the South East? I got PP and built 2 houses in Yorkshire and it was like falling off a log. 2 in Stevenage...much harder (2 appeals over 3 years, but won)..been trying to get PP for 8 flats on an infill in a Labour London borough for 10 (ten) years.. three pre applications ( all advice ignored in the decisions), three scheme's from three architects..One planning senior case office even wrote a full approval which was scrapped by his boss at the last minute before it went to committee. Planning department is a total basket case. Not a massive project but still £750,000 in CIL and affordable housing..they couldn't give a cra*p. They just lie. I'm giving up and it will stay as a car park.

The UN produced a document in about 2000 documenting replacement migration, their term, as a potential solution for the demographic changes that were already underway. They modelled a number of options, one was to maintain the population support ratio (PSR) at 3 or higher. In other words 3 or more workers required for every dependent member of society (kids and pensioners). The immigration numbers for the UK to maintain that figure at 3 or higher were net immigration of 250k a year.... which is roughly what Tony Blair achieved... other solutions, like having more kids, were not discussed much. Short term solution again....

Yes good teaching and lecturing skill arise from stage performance in my view. Not just academic knowledge. Although I grew up to be a scientist, my History teacher taught me more than anyone else. His blackboard had a bryllcream line along it where he rubbed his head and he often took off his shoes and socks to make points. We were enthralled. Iron age field systems had never seemed more interesting. He also trod grapes to demonstrate wine making. Truly an inspirational teacher as Sir are you. As I am your age I still learn more every day from your talks and you jog distant memories. You are not cancelled at all.

As an ex teacher, lecturer, trainer and presenter I could not agree more with David Starkey because I originally did not do well at school, was very much a show-off and wanted to be the centre of attention. In my mid 30s I retrained to be a teacher and finding my self in front of tough inner city kids that once being one of them i.e. a gang leader plus learning Tae Kwon Do in the RAF, I could scare them shitless, make them laugh and work bloody hard resulting in my groups getting good exam results. Having watched David in a Jamie Oliver series where he had to teach difficult kids, I was not surprise he did well, an 'absolute master' far better than I ever could be. Also, his point about most Lecturers still being scholars (and even though not saying so, could not find work else where) putting the emphasis on the subject topic as oppose the vehicle of delivering the topic being far more important - could not be more correct. Additionally, Ian Dale's point about the secret of being a good KZbinr, is that you stay with them to the end, is so true and is always the case with me. Going to shut up now and watch the 'master' in action.

We need a government in place which believes in looking after it's own people, restraint of market forces and which will nationalise sections of the economy. Aside from 3 terms of Labour during the post-war consensus of the last century - Atlee, Wilson and Calahghan - to which we owe practically all our social infrastructure, we've only ever had governments which look after the well-off (the share holders of energy companies) The use of the term 'cap' by the Tory government is Orwellian as it can be continually raised.

The description of Boris and KS, is fantasticly accurate. Both, setting up a country headed directly over the cliff in broad daylight. 😢 All the while telling everyone what they are seeing is a mirage. 😢😮😢

If you’re on basic state pension in the UK, nothing is cheap, for our state pension is one of the lowest in Europe.

The UK state pension is nigh on half of that of the original EU states, certainly Germany, France and even Spain.

@@drstrangelove4998 and lower than Poland, too. Its diabolically low. After 51 years of paying in, the rate is £190, then factor in the utilities hike, plus the everyday cost of living and the government should make euthanasia an option.

I teach human anatomy in a community college course in Michigan, U.S. I'm being cancelled by my college for some things I said in a presentation, to a class of adults, on things related to sex and sexuality and gender expression, and the biology behind it, in which I used the word "masturbate" (referring to some of the results of the landmark research into human sexuality by Masters and Johnson). This was meant to show how much people don't know on the subject of sexuality, especially the general public. I said that the scientists were shocked to find out that males weren't the only ones who masturbate. And that these were scientists who were shocked. I mentioned that when I was young, the priests and nuns still were telling young people not to do such things or you'll grow hairy palms and everyone will know what you've been up to. I then quoted subsequent research that showed that, if men don't have at least somewhat regular emissions, in one way or another, they are at a greater risk of developing prostatitis. And then other studies have shown, ironically, that one of the groups with the highest incidence of prostatitis is priests. Im 58, have been teaching for 32 years, have been teaching there for 25 years, and this doesn't seem to matter. Some student, possibly from one of the African countries of the Commonwealth, and very conservative, found all this talk about such things rather offensive. This complaint was then weaponized against me, a couple years prior to retirement. I was suddenly put on leave and taken out of all my classes in the middle of the semester, told not to talk to any students or colleagues, not to come to campus, etc. This student was just disgruntled and not doing well and just wanted their money back (not a policy), so took a ton of things I said out of context, said I sexualized everything, etc. I did discuss the biological basis if LGBTQ persons and the existence of people born sexually indeterminate gender, or mixed, or underdeveloped at the time, etc. I myself am gay, and disabled (I'm on dialysis), and very outspoken about changes they are trying to force on the course that I have the most experience with and have been teaching for more years than anyone currently employed. My supervisor has used this as an opportunity to get me out of the way so these changes could then be railroaded through without the major dissenting voice. However, I'm not very well-to-do (community college teacher salaries are not very high) - so this has been very anxiety -priducing for me, but I can relate to what happened to you. I've also been been mandated to attend therapy sessions and complete my "treatments", even though a medical diagnosis has not been made. I've been made out to be some mad raving sex fiend. Although I'm rather liberal and progressive socially, I'm actually rather shy and not particularly forward in my private social life about sexual things and probably would have had more "experiences" in my life if I had become a priest. Anyway, I know I'm rambling about all this, but if anyone wants to talk to me about all this, let me know. My home has just been destroyed, so I suddenly find myself under greater stress, so I probably don't sound as coherent as I normally would. I was just struck by the discussion of being cancelled over words.

We no longer want to hear the truth, be it just being borne bloody minded or going into the forces on leaving school have found this to be so true. Now retired and still loving my music of the 60s and the 70s, I took up learning to play the piano and thus have been studying music theory and David is absolutely spot on about the decline in music compared to the dross we now have. Ditto for so-called modern art which I also have taken up as well, no way is it comparable to the great artists before the 20th century, collections of empty cardboard boxes and crêpe paper. Having worked and visited most of the cities in Europe and spent many hours walking around them, again David is so right at the ugly concrete monstrosities we allowed so-called talented architects to impose on us. Starkey in truth is really the little boy who shouts out "The Emperor is wearing no clothes" because he simply states the truth but has the eloquence, wit, intelligence, incredible encyclopaedic knowledge to back up what he says - with actual evidence as proof.

David Starkey is the ambassador of all men past middle age. The eloquence and sophistication of his God Tier moaning is unparalleled. If only I had such a command over the King's! I rarely get past fuck this and fuck that which always lands me in the nick with the wife. A good old fashioned rant delivered with such devastating precision quenches the thirst of my hate filled old soul 😂

Seemed like a load of old tosh to me. I've never found Starkey charismatic enough to make his "wit" sound anything more than general unpleasantness. He's about as appealing to polite company as a watermelon stuffed with dog shit.

Last xmas I observed the homes on my common that had lavish lights and outside decorations. I often wondered what their elec bills would be? So, I propose these homes are identified by the local council (or the public) and then the 400 quid support is cancelled for them...
