Whether you live in Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or America we have a shared history, culture and language. Elizabeth II was living history and the tie that binds. The extent of good will she engendered and the outpouring of love was so overwhelming that it completely drowned out the leftist haters. We should all be thankful that we lived in the time of Elizabeth.

Your comment was beautifully expressed and absolutely right. Elizabeth the Great was our last link with our past and the last embodiment of previous generations' honour and duty. Losing her has hurt more than we expected, not least because it seemed somehow she was immortal.

Yes, I agree completely. Well written. Queen Elizabeth was living history, a part of who we were and remain. On hearing of her passing and like many others, dazed yet knew that it would happen due to sadly her years. I felt personally I'd lost someone who I'd known all my live but never knew, if that makes sense. I cried tears. She represented more to each of us than we ever imagined. That to me is the power of her reign and how she conducted herself within that. I am so glad I witnessed the eternal Queen Elizabeth.

indeed we are all “powerfully in need of ritual” - I’m a Diaconal Minister (Christian Educator) in the PCCnd and yet when I can I am in a pew at the nearest Anglican Cathedral for the rituals - this has gone back to my seminary days in early mid eighties - I would be at a Presbyterian Church so somewhere across Toronto, Cnd Sunday mornings and in any number of other denominations churches Sunday night - besides faith rituals there are also families rituals which have severely been interrupted by the pandemic - I come from large farm family - the table was always set for 75 for Christmas dinner - while growing up (am a true child of sixties - am 63 yrs old) Sunday dinners began with sung grace (tune of Old One Hundredth) as a child I was mesmerized by the harmonies and truly felt we had invoked God’s blessings - I could go on but I won’t except to say many many thnx for this incredible conversation with Lawrence - regards 🙏🇨🇦

Very interested by Starkey’s commentary on the institutions and formation of Britain vs America and France. As a Canadian whose ancestors were Loyalists who were forced to leave after the revolution and later fought the Americans in the War of 1812, I truly hope that these institutions and the Monarchy will continue in Canada as well. God save the King.

I admired HM King Charles for his honesty and courage in speaking against the worst atrocities of modern architecture, years ago. Modern architecture can be designed elegantly, like the beautiful gherkin building (20? Mary Axe), but much of it is just so downright ugly, it feels like a sarcastic joke against the community. It’s important economically, if for no other reason, for Britain to maintain its architectural and historical heritage. We can see hideous 1950-1960s apartment buildings and malls anywhere on earth, so why go to visit Britain for that? I think the new king has made a terrific start and will continue to do a great job for his country. His new role will bring out his best and he certainly had a long apprenticeship. I was touched that he mentioned love in his speeches, I do think he truly loves his country and that’s the most important thing of all.

Crystallising the origin of Our language to the 'construction' of monarchy and disassembly of Wokery, Blair and Mrs T and parliament in a way that explains my instincts in a far more cohesive and rational way! Asking each child to reinvent the educational wheel, as elucidated, touched a nerve acutely because I regularly cannot understand what modern writers are trying to convey, or perhaps it's just my advancing years! Thank-you, Mr Starkey, for the explanation of now from the only knowledgeable vantage point, the past. E&OE

And what is so wrong with that when to to be 'woke' in my opinion is to have common decency. Its a very small consolation though because I do think the Royal Family is out of place in today's modern society and needs to be got rid of. Their wealth and various properties and palaces also sicken me and need to be destroyed. This country desperately needs a Revolution. It needs a Socialist Republic in fact.

Goodness, even this ignorant American knows the difference between the Lord Chamberlain and the Lord Chancellor! I do think the BBC did an excellent job on the production of the funeral, it was flawless. I had hoped to hear the traditional Anglican service, but otherwise it was, yes, a great show. I was sorry that Her Late Majesty, whom I admired, died, but she did have a magnificent funeral.

I should like to hear your comments on the late Queen's legacy in the United States and the favorable impression her funeral left on the former colonies. We have had only two State Funerals in our history, Lincoln's and Kennedy's, so the Queen's was something relatively new for most of us.

American here. So,actually we don’t believe that all are “born equal and free”, but “created equal” & “endowed by our creator with…”. This is not a linguistic nothing. It’s an essential distinction in the way human rights are understood to be derived-that said rights do not rely on the whims of government whether of Kings or others. We have never been anti Monarchy but anti tyranny as it is understood in the Anglo-Christian tradition. It is why we have “separation” between Church and State which simply means that rights come from God directly to men from Christ whose teaching authority is wholly apart from and independent of the controversial ambitions of men wearing hollow crowns.

The most poignant moment for me was the return of the regalia to the Archbishop of Canterbury. It must have been so difficult for King Charles especially, knowing that they were borne by his mother almost all his life and putting them away means what it means. We'll see them again only when he's coronated. I was very moved.

My belief is the BBC did a great job with much of the cinematography, however they deliberately avoided telling the viewers who people were and their (and their actions) historical significance. This was to give the whole event a superficial theatrical appearance. One other point, is that there were far too many police and not enough guards - all 2,500 ought to have been there (or maybe they just exist on paper), and why do our troops need to be escorted by a mounted WPCs through closed off streets?

A quick review of Starkey's bio reveals that he was born in Kendall in Cumbria which is where I assume he was living at the time of the coronation. (an event I also can well remember) One would have to wonder at the rank hypocrisy of his mother who 'deeply disapproved' of Mrs. Sarginson and thought that the purchase of the TV set was 'the product of immoral earnings' was able to swallow her indignation long enough to take advantage of her generous neighbour's invitation to watch the great event on their TV set. Given that genealogical research shows that my family, the Sarginsons, have lived in the Cumbria area since the 1500s. In fact I have approximately 45 direct relatives living in that area as of 20 years ago. My grandparents immigrated to Canada before the Great War but the family remained in contact up to this very day. It would appear that the Starkeys were simply parvenus and nasty ones as well. LOL.

This is a dare to comment. What I've seen through the thousands of filters over what is reported, why is it not noted how humbly, tirelessly and confidently Queen Consort Camilla attends details, unruffling ruffled feathers, holding what must be a 'crowning moment' together in a seriously domestic sense. Does not the wish of QE II (that she be known as Queen Consort) 💐suggest an amazing trust in Camilla as Queen Consort? This is sent in full heart, rather jaded, distant (West Coast of Canada - 👋), and oddly dispassionately. I find it hard to convey the 'sympathy' with which I am filled to entrust you with this 'old prairie boy's take'. Were any king more blessed when times bring financial chaos to his people?

I'm a huge fan of David Starkey... but this video needs a different title. There's almost nothing here about the late Queen's legacy. Some informative and occasionally fascinating insights into the history of royal ceremonies and the office of PoW that quickly degenerate into diatribes against what he terms "wokery." I actually wanted to hear what Starkey has to say about QE2's legacy, and I didn't get it.

With all due respect for the late Queen as a human being, I think a bit rich to call all those prime ministers lined up for her funeral, "failed politicians" as opposed to Elizabeth being not that. Well, you cannot fail if you never do anything. It is that "King can do no wrong" illusion. Also, she didn't "admirably keep" what die inherited but rather lost the few remaining rights, especially the right to pick her keeper, resulting in the dysfunctional fact that is totally unclear who puts the most powerful person in the country in power. It leads to suggestions like in 2010 that the Queen could only pick a new PM on the advice of the old PM. A bit earlier, she had to endure ten years of a PM lauding the practice of "chopping monarchs' heads off".

David, you make a historical mistake toward the end. At 56:25 or so, you state that the American Revolution pretends to be the French Revolution. Forgive me if I am wrong, but the American preceded the French by about 20 or more years. It was the French copying the American, and then proceeding to radicalize it. The US had the experience of the British system to draw on, and thus did not go too far.

I suppose my problem with 'woke' is that, in order to be kind to 'minorities' (I use quote marks because some of these groups, such as women, and the sum of these groups together, are not minorities, and because every minority necessarily has within it further minorities, who are not encompassed by 'woke') the woke practices are, first of all, to adopt the views, however problematic, of the 'right', the identitarians, within each minority group, and secondly, to punish anyone who dissents from the up-to-date 'woke' viewpoint. There's NOTHING wrong with calling Starkey a dinosaur who speaks a load of old tosh, or calling him worse, but there is something wrong with a public shaming and public ostracism, with making him persona non grata on tv, with taking away his largely symbolic emeritus positions at university, with dumping him from every organisation in which he had a role. That's poisonous. For the individual, it encourages depression and suicide. For the society, it restricts speech, and restricts thought (of course this is entirely the point). That's my view, anyway.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I certainly was not in favour of banning Starkey, who I have always found very interesting so long as he sticks to history and doesn’t start propagating his unpleasant right-wing views on current affairs. You will tell that I am not taking an extreme position when I say that in spite of everything I still watch any history videos which he creates. I really don’t like Laurence Fox, but again I wouldn’t want him to be banned in anyway. I actually think that it is best if unpleasant views come out openly, rather than being driven underground.

@@uhtredragnorson9930 Yay! An exchange on social media where each party is happy with the things said by the other! It's great to know that we don't simply have 2 mutually hostile camps, that in a sense we all belong to a great infinity of "camps", eg., we might disagree about trade policy but agree on free speech, or disagree on free speech but agree on statues. I hope you have a great day.

Why? At least he's trying to stand up for our culture and heritage. He's pushing back against the woke lefty mob and has paid a very high price for it. I'm sure that most people listening to this found it to be very interesting.

In what way, in what sense. Do you simply mean you disagree with what each of them have said/stand for . In which case, why have you been watching this, a masochist perhaps? Or just desperate to tell the rest of us how you feel about them . Newsflash, the rest of us are interested in what they have to say. In turn, you are free to go elsewhere and find an echo chamber that suits.

@@oliverapex7924 Another who believes his opinion, like that of his fellow lefty losers, is somehow more valid, and enough to make the rest of us ignore an individual who has more intellectual capacity and knowledge than exists in your tiny, closed mind. And no doubt your own superior moral character allows you to pass absolute judgement, "no decent person" wants anything to do with him you say, decent by whose standards?. Because some of those who were desperate to condemn him have been revealed by their own nasty, spiteful behaviour and comments, to be anything but decent. Frankly, the way you lot piled in on him, all eager to throw your own stones, says more about your character than it does about his. Keep chewing on your spite and envy, it obviously gives your sad little life some meaning.

E&OE
