The cruising industry has produced some really amazing architectural marvels. However something was being developed in 2004 unlike any other ship ever built. A true rivalry between Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean to see could build the biggest. Carnival's concept was truly incredible... this is Project Pinnacle.

As a Carnival Engineer i must say this is actually interesting. Some things, let me say, would have been left on the blueprints and would have never seen the caribbean light; I'm referring to the rail car elevating from the lifeboat deck all the way to the sun deck and aligning to the rail track in order to roll all around the deck itself. Clearly too expensive to be skookum enough. The lido features are quite interesting and it could have been easily one of the best in the fleet. The overall design resembles (and actually anticipates) what RCL did with the Oasis Class (vaguely the stern cabins arrangement and design) and MSC (overall design). The funnel itself is a curious divertissement of the snubby short funnel introduced after the Spirit Class came in (Highly recognizable from the glasses grid which, on the spirit class, provide some natural light in the David's Stakehouse). On a more technical side what this ship would have anticipated is the lifeboat arrangement which was introduced this way only with the Carnival Dream in 2009 (using basically no moving davits, gravity nor hydraulic). Really interesting, i really didn't know they were up to something like this but it is obvious this would have been a 1Billion+ investment. P.s. Buddy: Great video.

Carnival’s original mardi gras ship was a little ship built in 1960 and was originally named RMS Empress of Canada and my grandma sailed on her in 1964. it was sold to carnival and became carnival’s first ship. they renamed her mardi gras, and later was sold to three other lines, and renamed lucky star, star of texas, olympic, apollo and finally apollon. she was scrapped in 2003.

You need to be on a much smaller boat if you want it to feel like you're on the ocean. The cruise ships are designed to feel like floating cities of things for guests to do while taking them from port to port. They have stabilizers to prevent guests from feeling the impact of the waves as much. They design the ship so that it's lighted from the outside as much as possible, but without the impact of the elements. None of this is designed to give you an authentic feeling of being on the ocean. The best for this would be smaller ships without the stabilizers and more designed for a sailing experience (rather than floating city).

I'm wondering if Carnival was smart in their decision to just create simple ships. I'm guessing it makes sense because they're the mainstream cheap cruise line, and if they created a major luxury ship like the Pinnacle, especially nowadays, it probably wouldn't have been successful. Prices would skyrocket and Carnival would risk losing its place in the cruise line market.

@mk202 6 жыл бұрын
I think they were smart to be conservative- if not intuitive at the least. The economy hadn't even seriously tanked yet at the time they priced the Pinnacle. By 2008- the industry would be speculating about the stability of Carnival with over a billion dollars spent on such a risky project, and ostracizing the company for not knowing better- which would have affected the launch of the ship. I seriously do hope to see a ship so spectacular launched at some point though. It seems like a floating, luxury hotel!
@basscadet75
@basscadet75 6 жыл бұрын
It's smart because of the fact that they own all these other cruise lines. They keep Carnival as kind of the Wal-Mart of cruise lines while letting their other lines specialize in different demographics. That said, they don't really have a line that Project Pinnacle would have really fit, and that's something that they're missing. They probably could use a line that competes against Royal Caribbean in sheer boldness of size and design. They could have redefined one of their lines (if not Carnival itself) as that type of line with Project Pinnacle, but instead they chose to maintain the status quo. At some point, that may come back to bite them. RCL is currently the fastest grown cruise company.

@@basscadet75 I'm a fan of both CCL and RCL, really wish Carnival went through with this, while Oasis class is great, they have flaws (very small buffet for capacity, no people mover system for size of ship, bad pool deck with way too small pools, too small solorum area, use of salt water instead of fresh in pools), would've been nice to see if carnival did these things better. RCL did fix the buffet size on the new Wonder of the Seas by moving it down to deck 15 although I haven't been on wonder yet so I can't personally attest to it being "fixed"

Hey man, I've been binging ur videos, defo earned a sub these are amazing. You made this 4.5 yrs ago. Now, the Carnival Mardi Gras haas launched, looking stirkingly similar to the new Celebrity Cruises ships, while also still having some elements of pinnacle. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the new Carnival ships and new cruise ships in general... like a video of what the future of the. cruising industry would look like, maybe it'll turn into a video idea lol. But hey these are excellent videos man, you. take care. Keep it up

These ships are just too large. I even think that the Disney fantasy might be a tad to large. They just have too many people on board. You most likely will never get to do any of the most popular attractions on the boat because of the thousands on board. You want to be on vacation with your family not with 5000 other people you're rubbing elbows with

Adam Gonzales I think the Disney Fantasy is right on the edge of being too large. The only problems that ship ever has with passenger crowding is the family pool deck. I think it does a great job everywhere else though.

I went on HAL last April on their Eurodam ship and I fell in love with the size of it. Completely different experience than the massive (not even the biggest) Independence of the Seas in terms of crowds. Never felt crowded on the Eurodam. It's HAL of course dedicated to the elderly, but as a teen bringing my best friends, it was actually a fantastic cruise. We loved it more than the Independence. The Eurodam's docked next to the Indy in Port Everglades and it's crazy seeing the size difference.

Ended up reaching out to Mr. Farcus after watching this interview last month and was pleasantly surprised to hear back. I can attest that he is an absolute gem of a man and a master of his craft. Whether you're a fan like myself of the elaborate and vividly colorful charm or find it a bit overwhelming like some do, there is no denying that it immediately engages a reaction. That connection of creation to sense and emotion is, at the very definition, art. When life gives you a boat you gotta rock it sometimes. Joe has a book out called Design on the High Seas which is a fantastic read about the person,, art and history all bound together with wit and wisdom.
