Cancer, Alzheimer's & Protein Origami | David Pincus | TEDxBeaconStreet

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The two diseases most likely to afflict us as we age - cancer and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's - may both have an Achilles' heel. David Pincus will argue that the two are fundamentally linked by the vital cellular process of "protein folding". This provocative talk posits that protein folding is the key to unlocking all cancers - not just for treating specific cancers, like breast cancer or lung cancer - and for all neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS.
David Pincus, a Fellow at the Whitehead Institute and recipient of the NIH Director's Early Independence Award, is a molecular and cell biologist given the rare opportunity to direct an independent research laboratory and pursue his scientific ideas immediately following completion of his PhD. His studies on how cells respond to stress point to an underlying connection between cancer and neurodegenerative diseases that he hopes to exploit through research to potentially solve both.

@@batroll1 basically your interpretation of it. Yes. It’s a better way to set ourselves up for success yet it only scratches the surface. What’s in the air you breathe? Are you closer to a city, the suburbs or the sticks? What’s in the water you drink? What do you think about on a daily basis? French fries and beer are vegan. Is that a good start?

Here's a thought, eliminate the excessive burden we place on chaperon's by reducing our consumption of complex proteins. The china study and other similar findings have shown this to be the case. I for one prefer the vegan approach. It's where all the science and clinical findings are pointing.

Hundreds of millions of dollars have been donated to cancer and other diseases, where is the money going? Why is the progress so slow? We have three main techniques or treatments if you will for cancer- chemotherapy, radiation, and slowly emerging, immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is in my opinion the most effective/promising, so why did it take so long?

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe there are any animal models for immunotherapy which is why it is difficult to test. And there have been great strides in cancer research...but cancer is one of the ways that our bodies react to aging. I expect we will never fully be rid of it.

The audience laughing was so out of place. There’s nothing funny about cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. This guys research appears to be a major breakthrough and I hope by 2050 there will be a way to deal with these “chaperones” at just the right levels. It’s interesting that he said “people who have had cancer will probably never get Alzheimer’s-cancer is in my family and there’s been no history of Alzheimer’s disease -I truly believe he’s on the right track!
