No wonder I got strange blood test of my kidney working overload when I ate big portions of rice once a day, damn dude.... It seems like potatoes and whole wheat pasta is the only starches along with beans that I'm going to eat. Just happy to know that rice isn't healthy even though I thought it was. John Mcdougal is still downplaying the arsenic of rice but this is a serious issue. He should probally look at it more seriously but he is right in the fact that tuna and poultry along with other things has it more concentrated.

I love Dr. Greger's videos very completely and easy to understand my criticism would be regarding providing options or solutions not just pointing to the problem. At this point we know our food and water supply is tainted, we know ultra processed high caloric, nutrient depleted foods are at the core of our health crisis. knowing rice and seaweed are toxic in Arsenic is great information but what is the solution? If you are an Asian American who's base of diet is rice I doubt simply stating this would make them change this habit. What are the options Wild rice? what about consuming foods that provide us with the heavy metal detoxification elements? What if you are and athlete or an elderly person how would this affect you?

Rice, and kelp/seaweed, are part of my family's daily dish. Is it safe if I buy rice produced in Asia (ie: China, Thai), and buy kelp and seaweed from Canada?
@coyleopard12307 жыл бұрын
This is quite irresponsible misrepresentation of the current scientific consensus on the safety profile of frequent rice consumption. Pretty much every scientific research points to the fact that regular whole grain intake (including brown rice) reduces all-cause mortality. If you are really concerned about arsenic, then you should go for white rice over the brown ones, but it is quite clear that white rice is worse than brown rice in terms of overall effects on our health, which means arsenic is not the thing we should focus here. Also, Asians - especially the Japanese - who on average consume rice much more than the typical Westerners have fewer incidences of cancer and live longer. Hispanics and Mexicans also frequently enjoy rice and they too are on average healthier (ever heard of Latino paradox?) I don't know what motivated Dr.Greger to suddenly change his tune with regard to this subject, because I specifically remember him downplaying the potential dangers of rice consumption just a few years ago, and he certainly isn't telling you the whole truth now.
@sable937 жыл бұрын
As I recall from one of Dr.Greger's earlier videos the reason Hispanics live that little bit longer is because they eat more beans. Less bowel inflammation and better digestion. Something like that. I would also like to know why Japanese people have fewer incidences of illness if sushi is such a large portion of their diet. Perhaps the catechin antioxidants found in tea play a role in cleansing arsenic from our bodies?
@coyleopard12307 жыл бұрын
White rice has neutral health benefits outside of some minor risk factors for diabetes. Brown rice and other whole grains, on the other hand, are well documented to promote longevity for those who consume them regularly. So the fact that Asians eat a lot of White rice and don't suffer from major health crisis doesn't prove anything other than that White rice is just fine for our body (but probably Brown rice is even better, which directly contradicts Greger's argument.) And if eating beans easily cancels out potential negative effects of arsenic in rice, what is this fuss about in the first place? Because if this was that much of a serious problem, simply eating a lot of beans or veggies will still not be enough, as evidenced by shortened lifespan of those who consume a lot of meat, regardless of their legume intake.

If rice is used to extract arsenic out of the ground (arsenic phytoremediation) because it absorbs it so well haven't we already pulled all the arsenic out of the ground? I couldn't care less about rice anyways I'm just curious...

In my family it's usually strokes and heart disease that kills them, so basically the same blissfull ignorance about diet. Stokes and heart disease still count as "natural" causes, they don't call it dietary suicide...
@OZSA877 жыл бұрын
You're not alone, I've been telling my family for years, after they tried out plant based diet they even felt the difference, they know it's better but still, they are too lazy and sometimes even say "you gotta die of something and at least I'm living my life" (compared to vegans who obviously are just in limbo, motionless waiting to die). For example my grandma is terribly sick every time she eats meat (can't digest properly anymore) but after a week of avoiding animal products, she gets back to meat, again a week pause and repeat.. when you see how senseless they are, after every attempt to help, you got to let them go.

I'm not a big fan of rice anyway mainly because of its' high glycemic load, but I suspect there are some areas of the world, like maybe Madagascar or parts of Africa, or maybe Indonesia where they couldn't afford to purchase the pesticides containing arsenic compounds, and the soils are pretty much free of arsenic. For people who love rice, it seems it would be worthwhile for rice samples from the more impoverished and remote areas of the world tested for their arsenic content. There are probably some that have little or none.
@someguy21355 жыл бұрын
As this video points out, rice increases your chance of cancer and other diseases. It does not increase it to 100 percent. I am just one person. Statistically, any one person eating rice will be unlikely to get cancer. Some of us want to reduce the risk. I eat rice, but I take the precautions that Dr. Greger advises. One exception, is that I do eat rice at restaurants. When given the choice, I ask for white rice, because it contains less inorganic arsenic than does brown rice.
@popeyegordon5 жыл бұрын
Rice does not increase cancer; alcohol, beef and bleached white flour does. White rice and white bread are stupid things to eat in 2019 when we know so much about how all the nutrition is lost when we remove the husks. You are fooling yourself.
