Screening tests are the source of quite a lot of confusion and controversy - mostly as a result of a widespread misunderstanding of exactly how they work and what their limitations are.
This video aims to explain what exactly is a screening test, the major issues surrounding screening tests and the list of criteria that define what a good or acceptable screening test, as described by Wilson and Junger in 1968.

hi there, How do you screen for Lung Cancers?

Hi Jack, thanks for the question! At present, in the UK (where I practice) there is no screening programme for lung cancers. This is because we've yet to have found a test that fulfils all the criteria that I've mentioned in the video. There is currently research into whether a type of low dose CT scan could be used to pick up cancers in selected patients who are at high risk (these are older patients with a significant cigarette smoking history). Ct scans come with risks however - one being that radiation from CT scans is a risk factor for developing cancers itself. Those with abnormalities will need biopsies - which also come with significant risks. Plus some of the abnormalities seen on CT may prove to not be cancer on biopsy. Also there may be an issue with over diagnosis - some cancers that are found and later treated may have never been cancers that would never have been life threatening, if they were never found. Low dose CT is being used increasingly in the USA for lung cancer screening in high risk groups, and there is some promising data, but at present not quite enough to justify widespread use here in the UK. Hope that helps!

Thank you. Well, recently i have had a CT- Scan and 4 Nodules showed in my Lungs; 9mm, 6mm,5mm, and 4mm. 3 Nodules in my right lung and the smaller one in my left lung. So i went to my Pneumologist and she just told me to repeat the CT- Scan after 3 months.... But am worried, i feel that my Doctors should be more active.... Thanks a lot and God bless you. Jack
