The story of Neale Boyle and his life-saving donor, Trey Freeman, has inspired many from West Chester, PA, and all the way to Mississippi College. Back in 2014, the West Chester community was devastated to hear the news that their coach, friend, and colleague was diagnosed with AML. His family and friends came together to support him in his journey. After a few years of battling AML, it was concluded that Boyle would need a transplant. Boyle was in search of a very specific donor for his blood type and knew it was going to be difficult to find a match. Carol Barnes, a teacher all the way from Mississippi College, offered extra credit points to any student who would test for a match, and Trey Freeman, Barnes’ student, willingly decided to test for himself. As soon as Freeman heard he was a match, he willingly sacrificed months of painful surgeries and recovery to save the life of someone 1,100 miles away. His heroic actions saved Boyle’s life, yet a mis-communication prevented them from ever meeting. Almost three years later, Neale had the chance to meet his donor. Neale’s friends and family put together a surprise party, with the biggest surprise of all, Trey. Neale was told he was entering a March Madness Party, but soon after he entered the room realized this party was for him. Trey made his way to the front and the two were able to meet face to face for the first time. It was an emotional day for all, and to top it off, a video from Carol Barnes was played for them both to see. She explained how happy she is that her small suggestion to the class turned into an inspiring story and a bond between the two that will never be broken.

@@FarajiCouncil Honestly, I think there's FAR MORE loving your neighbors than anything negative--it's just that you never hear about that. Only the bad news sells. We are all brothers/sisters, and the vast majority of us act that way. Maybe some day, the only news we'll hear or read will be of the positive things in our lives. Peace!

Stop the BS, not many people would donate to a random person they don't know. Personally I wouldn't sorry. The only people I would ever donate anything are my siblings, parents, wife and kids if I have some one day. That's it. I would also donate to my sibling's kids but other than that, I'm sorry...

You asked "Aren't we all supposed to be like this?" and my response is: we live in a society where aborting a child is seen as a "choice"... so many, many members of our society don't agree with those words.

As an ED/ER doctor, I'd like to wholeheartedly "second" this comment. I couldn't treat some of my sickest patients without the incredible donors out there who give their blood to save others. Donors also help almost every medical specialty - from oncology (cancer care) to renal (kidneys), from gynae (women's health) to GI (bowels), & many, many more. Donors are an incredibly important part of medical care and most hospitals treat hundreds, if not thousands, of patients every year who would die if they were unable to receive a blood transfusion. So a huge "thank you" to all who donate (or have done so in the past). If you're able to donate, please consider it. It really does save lives.

I have heard that companies or hospitals who do these transplants don't want the donor and the receptor to ever meet.. Is this true? if so, why? my guess is that most receptors would like to thank the donor face to face.

Am I the only one bothered that extra credit was offered? I highly doubt that's why he did it, but that just felt icky to me. The desire to give should be the incentive in something so painful and personal as giving of your own body. Such a wonderful gift Trey has given Neale. May they both be blessed with many long, joyful years to come.

Can you not take the gesture for what is worth. These were young kids in school. I'm sure the student didn't want the extra school credit. There's always one (1) to bad mouth people who did good.

@@annbreen1910 It is weird though. "I'll give you extra credit if you get yourself tested to see if you're the right match for this person so that you'll go through tons of painful surgeries to save them". It doesn't bother me as much as the way she speaks, trying to use the man's generosity and kind spirit to advertise her college and make herself seem like she deserves any credit for the man's incredible character.
@mrspokitstheriot477

I'm pretty sure this was bone marrow transplant (which is an incredibly painful process) but this would absolutely not be allowed with organ donation. Any added incentive is a disqualifier for live donors.

Trey just so happens to be a high school friend of mine. Knowing him, he didn’t need the extra credit because he’s a very intelligent man. He’s one who would voluntarily do something like this because he’s a good compassionate man. I’m very proud of what he did so someone could have the chance to live.
