Play the recording at 0.90 speed and you will better hear what the tempo SHOULD be. Once again, we have crazy Americans who think that "tearing off to the Races" is somehow more virtuous than playing at a tempo where one can actually hear the articulation and the GRAND MAJESTY of the composition. Technically speaking though, an excellent performance aside from the tempo issue.

Written for the "entrance of the Matron of the ball and other important people" (!) at the Vienna Phil's first benefit ball for the retired musician's pension fund (1924); has been played every year since then at Vienna Phil's balls. mb
