That's because Blackmore found himself when he started playing medieval renaissance music. He was never happy playing rock because it wasn't him. When he was in Deep Purple and Rainbow he imitated everyone else. He'd try to sound like Page, Hendrix or any other guitarist at the time. He'd steal riffs because his heart wasn't in it. It was YoKo Ono who turned him on to the idea of playing renaissance music. Renaissance is what he was listening too during that time in his life, and it was his true passion, he just didn't know it. Ono opened him up to the idea. Richie was never really happy when it came to rock, that's why he always seems like he's brooding when the topic is brought up during interviews. For Pete's sake, Blackmore was into Wes Montgomery in the 60's. He had an affinity for jazz also. As for the Blues, it wasn't his thing even though he played it well.

Aber diese mittelalterlich angehauchte Musik, überhaupt mittelalterliche Musik, ist für mich der Rock des Mittelalters. Stupidest thing i've heard.. while a decidedly different route than "Deep Purple", it was still firmly in the heavy category of music, culminating in an even more "easy listening" variant of the band with the departure of Dio. Even the comeback album "Stranger in us all" in the 90's was firmly in the heavy category. Only after that did he quite radically change style. If he had "wanted to play" the kind of music he now plays (medieval style), he'd have started 20 years earlier than he did :)
