thank you ! this is the video that i was looking for, specially coming from you, just because i know you have plenty experience with this business. Thanks so much! I just started to test some soy wax and wicks, but thanks to all your videos im so motivated to start my small business, we are doing this more for a extra income that will help with the kids education payments and of course other thing is because i love candles. I should start this long time ago but having kids didnt let me have a lot of time and plus working as a cardiac nurse that cut my time, i save all my kits for about 1 year and now i am in to everything , researching , reading ect... i have the name for my business but not sure yet to do my LLC , lic, insurance ect... yet , i want to wait and feel comfortable with the results, but yes this video answer all my questions. This is what I need! People don't understand that anyone can so for anything. They may not win but nothing stops them from filling the paper work and taking you to court especially if they think you have money cause most people settle. I saw a new story of someone who sued nearly every business in the same block thought they never step inside or interacted with any of their products because they get money for the insurance when they settle and they all do because it costs more to go to court.

Your videos are so helpful, had a few issues, where candles are tunnelling due to too much dye to sweating candles from too much fragrance 😅 currently trying to work out if the wicks are to big, because my tins are getting hot and melt quite fast, I thought candle making was going to be super easier, but I was wrong 😂 that's for making your videos they are such a big help 😊

Yikes! I can't imagine not having insurance. In today's world people are much to quick to pawn their problems on someone else. Sorry that sounds harsh, but is totally true. If someone can fluff off and blame someone else they will. Our neighbor lady burnt her house down by leaving a burning candle at home with a cat in the house. The cat knocked it off into a basket of laundry and poof, up went her house. She came to me knowing I make candles and skin care. I told her it was her fault to deal with it! She turned it in to her insurance, they paid. No it wasn't one of my candles, it was a large well known candle company. I want about to tell her we carry insurance, because she was looking for an out. She left the candle burning. The company had nothing to do with her ignorance, so why should they bear the burden? It's sad that people just can't be honest. It would be a better world! Great video Jeff on a very important subject!

I actually bought alot of candles as a practicioner of magick/santeria which aided in my spiritual healing and manifestations. I switched to making my own candles bc im one of those hippie types lol and wanted to burn cleaner (soy wax). You've taught me almost everything! Thanks, Jeff! Appreciate your review of all the insurance types and the honest angle of realism in insurance. I always say "the real world won't reward your relentless optimism" haha. If you're primarily selling online I think Product Liability Insurance is the absolute minimum coverage you should carry given it handles the damage once the candle is in someone's home. In your followup I think it might be helpful to talk about the boundary between an LLC and insurance and why you'd need both. Looking forward to a potential part 2!

LLC limits the personal liability for the owners for situations where customers might hold the business responsible for some damage. Insurance is still needed for an LLC to cover the same instances where a person might be liable for defective product or negligence (not blowing out a candle at a candle party when you're showing them off). While the owners are not personal liable, meaning who's ever coming after the biz cant go after personal assets, the LLC is liable meaning it would have to pay for whatever damages if it was the lawsuit was successful.

One caveat. You stated around 10:00 that a customer wouldn't be able to come after you personally, that your insurance is going to cover everything for you. Depending on the circumstances, it might be possible that an insurance policy would not cover all damages. You would hope that a million dollar policy would be adequate, but a lot of homes are worth more than that and then there is the question of the contents of the home, lives lost (human or animal), medical bills, damaged vehicles, costs for relocation and temporary housing, whether pain and suffering is awarded, etc. Of course local laws and the specifics of your policy leave a wide range of possibilities, but in some jurisdictions it might be totally possible for someone to sue for additional damages above and beyond what the insurance policy covers and you might be liable for them. That's where having an LLC might come into play, for example. Just a word of caution though in relying strictly on an insurance policy, as important as it may be.

I think the LLC protects your personal assets and keeps your candle business separate. It is a good idea to have an LLC and it is pretty easy to get.

The Soap Guild DOES cover candles and offers General Liability and good coverage at a very reasonable rate. I have been doing abusive burn testing based on your advice, thank you for that suggestion! I noticed you didn't have NEXT insurance on your list but I get A LOT of FB ads for this company. Did you not list it because it is literally impossible to list every insurance carrier? I checked with insureon and they do not provide coverage for home-based businesses - maybe once we get big enough to have our own space :-).

I just called Insureon and NEXT today. Insureon seems a little more pricey and also limits what you can sell if you come out with new products. NEXT was incredibly great to me, I did have to call a real person and make sure i was doing everything correctly but they cover you whether you do online OR in person sales. ANY product you offer. Also very inexpensive. Signed up immediately. I hope this helps someone!

You’d want to have your business or LLC before having insurance. The insurance policy needs to be written in the correct name.

Thimble quoted over $1000... for what though? “Work NOT Covered Commercial property is not included in this policy (so if your house or apartment burns down while you’re creating your candles, the claim would not be covered) Products liability is excluded from our policies (e.g. if you were sued due to a fire caused by a defect in your candle, we would not cover the claim)”

Defamation can only happen when you make incorrect statements about a company and it costs them business. Writing an honest review about your experience, is not defamation. If that were the case, my local McDonalds would make millions in lawsuits.

For insurance purposes, yes, as they become hot molten wax which is highly flammmable.

Sad that you need insurance for something someone else buys something..common sense says its their responsibility. Unless a candle maker does something truly stupid to make another persons house down then you go after that person if you can prove it. But the reality is you buy something that deals with fire...be careful. Its not that difficult. Just my rant..nothing to do with you just the way people can be is my issue. That being said.. Guess ill get insurance because of that reason
