Agreed. And as time goes on more and more I appreciate that Quasimodo didn't end up with Esmerelda in the end as that would have undercut the whole theme. Both Frollo and Quasimodo desired her and eventually had to face the fact that she didn't want them back (at least not romantically in Quasi's case). But where Frollo just loses his mind over that, Quasi accepts it and let's her go. It's the ultimate evidence in who is really the monster and who is actually a good man.
@AlexplainshowАй бұрын
@@George_M_ errr she got pair with the good looking one. I rather Qus being portrayed more villainous and being chosen
@dumpsterhagАй бұрын
@@ariwl1This! The more mature stage musical explores it even further because in that version, Frollo actually assaults Esmeralda in an attempt to make her love him, and it's super traumatic. On the flip side, when Esmeralda dies, she tells Quasimodo that he's such a good friend in a very cliche friendzone. But he affirms the title of friend instead of being outraged like many "nice guys." He recognizes that even though she never loved him in a romantic way, she was still always a kind and good friend to him, and that's still love. This is why he's so angry when Frollo says that he might have loved Esmeralda - Quasi sees that what Frollo did to Esmeralda could never have been out of love, and through that, he sees that what Frollo did to him wasn't love either. So Quasi kills Frollo, and the voices of the saints urge him on because this is not a monster killing a man, it's a man killing a monster.
@thecosmickid8025Ай бұрын
@@Alexplainshow She explicitly views Quasimodo as a boy. Which he is; he's sixteen. He's a student with a crush on the teacher, basically. He's got a good heart, of course, but if you compare how Quasi interacts with her versus how Phoebus interacts with her, Quasi idolizes her as an angel whereas Phoebus actually connects with her as a person. So the final result is a payoff of this setup throughout the movie, and doesn't have anything to do with appearances. It's really very well done on Disney's part; they could have easily screwed this up.

For people who like musicals, there is a Hunchback of Notre Dame musical that uses the music from the Disney movie and also adds some more songs that are very good. It also incorporates more elements from the book, like Frollo's brother, Jehan, and Quasimodo's deafness. It's like a more mature version of the animated movie, but in a way that does not lean into talking too much about sex and cursing. I highly recommend it.

Back when I was doing HEMA, we'd often get people complaining that "you couldn't grab a sharp sowrd by the blade! This only works because these are dull!" So the instructor would get a sharp sword, demonstrate that it was sharp enough to slice a loose sheet of paper (which calls for a pretty fine edge, really), and then grab it, bare-handed, by the blade and give the handle to the largest person around and tell him to pull. And of course he was fine. Swords aren't razor-sharp *anywhere* along their length, you have to slice if you want to cut with them. So as long as you don't shift your grip or slide your hand, you can totally hold a sword by the blade.

Possibly. He was found / left at the Cathedral on Quasimodo Sunday, known by some as the First Sunday after Easter; the name of that Sunday comes from the Latin text of 1 Peter 2:2. From Hugo's translated text, found on Wikipedia: He baptized his adopted child and called him Quasimodo, either because he wanted to indicate thereby the day on which he had found him, or because he wanted the name to typify just how incomplete and half-finished the poor little creature was.

I'd say Disney's Hunchback _contains_ a good movie. The awkward tonal shifts to the shenanigans of the comic relief characters is just... bad. They clearly added it in when they thought "Oh crap, this is supposed to be a kids' movie. Uhh, quick! Let's follow up the beautifully juxtaposed Heaven's Light / Hellfire sequence with a few minutes of the gargoyles clowning about." I'm all for family-friendly entertainment, but that's not what this movie is. It's a mature story (by which I mean it has themes that children just won't understand) that they crammed some mindless children's entertainment into because they were scared to commit to it.

It is interesting to compare this scene with the Snow White fight you did a while back as both have an inexperienced female fighting a far more experienced and skilled male opponent who isn't necessarily taking the fight as seriously. I much prefer this one for multiple reasons. For one you aren't supposed to think that Esmerelda is this guys equal in a fight and when she lands hits it is because she is fighting dirty and with assistance which we have seen is her preferred method of dealing with sticky situations. Second is while the guy is being cocky he still seems to understand that his foe could hurt him and he gets punished when he goes too far.

I always forget how much I love this movie when I haven't seen it in a while, and its always such a joy to come back to. I wanted to be Esmeralda so badly as a kid. I had a doll of her and she was the best because she was fully articulated, supposedly because she was a dancer, but that just meant she was the doll who could go on the best action adventures!

I love this!! Have you ever considered doing analysis of the 1982 Scarlet Pimpernel? I love that movie and it seems like it would very much suit your comic/character-development-heavy taste in material for analysis!

Can we really appreciate how strong Esmerelda is? That candelabra would likely be solid iron and weigh ~50lbs (22.7kg). Even if she were a trained combatant weilding that thing would be a pretty epic endeavor.

No wonder Esmerelda gets tired swinging that candlestick around - it looks very heavy and unwieldy. She may not be a trained fighter, but it seems that she is clever in how she uses it.

I didn't realize that Jill has been on KZbin for that long; and that stage fighting wasn't always her niche on KZbin.

Just reaching the climax of your book, and it would have been really useful to know Captain Collins looks just like this guy so my brain could imagine it all a little bit better lol

So, Quasimodo is getting on and decides he really needs to hire an assistant to help ring the bells. He places an ad in the market square and goes back to his tower to go about his normal day to day business. Next day to his surprise he hears a knock on the door. So down he goes where he is surprised to find this man who no arms standing there. "Ummm... Hi?" "Quasimodo? I am here about the job as assistant bell ringer that you listed in the market square." "You what?" "Quasimodo. I am here about the job as assistant bell ringer..." "You've got no arms!" "Not a problem. Allow me to join you in the bell chamber and demonstrate my skill." So Quasimodo shrugs and leads the man up the stairs. They go up each and every flight until they reach the bell chamber at the top of the bell tower. Quasimodo, still bemused, stands back and allows his guest to perform his audition. The man looks at the bell, carefully paces up a run up and then turns and launches himself at the bell, headbutting into side of the bronze mass. The bell chimes, pure and loud and swings away. Quasimodo is impressed but before he can comment the heavy bell swings back, strikes the man and knocks him off the bell tower. "Bugger!" says Quasimodo as he looks over the edge to the street below. "Best get down there." So Quasimodo runs down the stairs, pausing briefly for breath and then out onto the street. Outside a crowd has gathered and a police man spies Quasimodo and approaches him. "Quasimodo? This man has just fallen from your bell tower. He is unfortunately dead. Do you know his name so we can contact his next of kin?" "His name?" says Quasimodo, "No, I don't know his name, but his face rings a bell!" . . . I'll get my coat.

I've never felt so seen as when you said you have to deliberately hold back from saying "said the Archdeacon" every time you say "stop."

For a sassy fight, there's also the opening scene of Roxanne. That was fun.

Wonder if Jill will do a review of Diablo 1 to 4 games armour - there was/still is? A great review from a player of the games reviewing the amour as a fashion designer or reviewer etc it is very funny and informative and scathing about the different colours especially

That shot when you demonstrated 5a was very cinematic. The way your face was framed between the blade and your arm, and the way you were staring directly into the camera made it look like you had just rebuffed your enemy/love interest, and were right about to spring into the fight! Very dramatic.

I would like to recommend Scaramouche with Stewart Granger. Three major sword fights, three levels of skill on the main character's part, and the third fight is almost seven minutes long.
