Definitely strong influence of Black Sabbath, the fathers of metal, whose first albums' genre is sometimes called proto-doom. Candlemass openly stated them being one of their main influences. Nice reaction, keep it up!

by today's standards they are the grandfathers of doom metal, still awesome regardless.

Very much a Black Sabbath vibe. In fact, around the time of "Nightfall" they would perform a Sabbath medley live. The whole Doom genre thrives on the Tritone, which has been described as "Diabolus in Musica" (The Devil in Music). I won't go into the technical aspects, but it is often used in Horror music filmscore. It is there to give a natural chilling or foreboding atmosphere, which you obviously felt when listening to this number 😉

Messiah Marcolin in those albums sometimes sounds like he is representing humanity and singing from the top of mount Olympus or something. The band itself actually capitalised on that and there is an amazing song you can react/listen to from Candlemass called "Tales of Creation" which is the epitomy of that concept both from Marcolin and the band itself. Enjoy. :) The best version for that on YT is titled "Candlemass - Dawn / A Tale Of Creation (Studio Version)" since it includes "Dawn" which is the narrator getting you into the song. That stuff is chilling. Always makes my spine tingle in a good way.

Candlemass are from Sweden and they have a solid catalog of music and you could spend months going through it. And I highly recommend it all. They are still active too. But if you are looking for more doom, try Solitude Aeternus - Beyond the Crimson Veil album, try the song Black Castle, or any song on the album, they all slay.

@@SaeedReacts. The vocalist of Solitude Aeturnus, Rob Lowe, actually was the singer with Candlemass also from 2007 - 2012 and recorded 3 albums with them. Messiah sang with the band from 1987-1991 and then again from 2002-2006. Current Candlemass vocalist is Johan Längqvist, who came back after singing as a session musician on the band's 1st album "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" in 1986.

The base of this is a parable from the Bible - Luke 10:25-37 - where Jesus tells to the gathering about a man from Samaria who gives succour to a man who was attacked by robbers on the way to Jericho and left for dead. Samaritans & Jews were not ordinarily friendly to each other, but he pays for his upkeep at an inn whilst the Priest & Levite had just walked by. The Samaritans is a charity formed here in the UK in 1953. Anyone feeling suicidal, or are in need of someone to talk to, can call the Samaritan phoneline and speak to someone in confidence about their problem.

Love it. First time I heard Candlemass was with the Black Candles music video from the same album back in the 80s. Thought the video was badass then, not so much now 😂 Music still good though and it was one of the bands which lead me into more metal. Candlemass, Metallica, Bathory, Slayer. Have to thank them for a lot! Doom metal can be a lot heavier than this by the way, as the early 90s came bands like My Dying Bride, Anathema and Paradise Lost emerged from the UK and brought even more melancholy along with some growls on top. Oh, and Funeral from Norway. They have clean vocals these days and are top notch (From these wounds, Oratorium, etc) but started out extremely slow and heavy. Most are kinda angry at the heavens but the band Parameceium (sp?) are outspoken Christians and their first album from the 90s is very good.
