I have to say Othias, May, and the gang at +C&Rsenal this was by far my favorite episode of the series. I love how you’ve set the stage up for the up and coming Mauser rifles and how you took Peter Paul Mauser from a name in a book and really made him human. I’m currently saving up to go to college with the hopes of becoming a history teacher. I have often said that history should be taught as the life experiences of men and women in the past instead of just names and dates. I believe that shows like yours, +TheGreatWar, +ForgottenWeapons, +BritishMuzzleloaders, +Capandball, etc... truly inspire people my age to really revolutionize the way we look at, learn about, and share history. I am from Turkey and we call every bolt action rifle, no matter what company or what nation made it, mavzer, Turkish pronunciation of Mauser and we have folk songs about the gun.

Sweet, a dedicated Ottoman rifle episode. If only they were more common and worth way less, I'd jump on an Ottoman 1887, Peabody, or even a Snider. Plus, I learned that the Ottoman Empiee made Snider breech-loading rifles out of Springfield percussion rifles that they bought from the Germans, who captured them from the French during the Franco-Prussian War, who bought them from the US, who also sold a bunch directly to the Ottoman Empire. And the Snider actions were either bought directly from Britain or locally made. And this was just an emergency rifle meant to make sure that every soldier had something to fight with.

Not perhaps as difficult as you may think. 9.5 is far better known in the US and Britain as a .375 caliber. There are a lot of .375 based cartridges still out there. I don't have case dimensions handy, but something might be close enough to modify.

@@ringding1000 hum, I actually try to remaque this cartridge and its not easy. 9.5 turkish is .374 caliber not .375. And very hard to find a mold for this bullet :)

@@Contribuablevener Well, bullet molds can be made for not much money. But, I would slug the barrel before doing anything. That way you will know what the true bore diameter is. And while I can't know the exact condition of your specific gun, pure lead cast bullets over light to moderate powder charges offer little over pressure risks to a suitable shooter gun. I wouldn't sweat .001"/.00254mm difference all that much.

I already check my bore 66mm from bolt heat to twists and F 9.45 Z 9.74 I think bought a .375 mold for 38/55 caliber, drill grease place (sorry for my english, I m french) and add paper. For a bullet + paper at 9.70mm like original ammo (I have one). What do you think ?

@@Contribuablevener I think I would try it myself with light charges with dead soft lead bullets and inspect cases closely for pressure signs. I run my muzzle loading rifles with cloth patches at .005" to .010,(.127mm-.254mm), over bore size with no problem. But you can also get a swaging die to reduce the diameter if the lead bullets also. If a custom mold isn't for you. But it's your gun and your health. You must weigh the risk and judge for yourself.

Hi, watched this episode a few times know. I really love the "boring history lesson" othias telling us here... This time I wonder for the first time about the pronunciation of "Huber" as "hu-bee"... in Germany and esp. It did actually injure Paul Mauser's pride so much that just before the 98 was ever commissioned, he made a test rifle and it blew up in his face which caused him to lose an eye which was was always salty about till the day he died.

Also, I notice the battle sight blade shown in May's segment is marked for 300, not sure it that's Meters or Yards, but there it is. I'd wager a guess that the express leaf is marked for 400, and the beginning of the ladder is 500 and up.

Can't help but think that in a low gravity setting, the kropatschek based rifles, like other open top, might have cartridges flying from the lift, limiting it to single shot. In a retro space combat ( or rather low grav breathable planet) setting, an enclosed mechanism like a winchester might be superior. Listening to a C&Rsenal episode when not fully woken up has its hazards. Got a question though: does the rifle get clogged more easily because of the smaller caliber ?

canicheenrage Fun fact, the 71/84 is a controlled feed. What do I mean? The lifter encircles the base of the case enough that it CAN'T fall out, and if loaded with proper bullets, the cartridge overall length is long enough that the tip of the bullet is within the receiver, when the cartridge is in the lifter. You can cycle a 71/84 upside down just fine. The ONLY way the cartridge can get out of the lifter is forward, which is the direction you want it to go.

This episode arrived at an insanely coincidental time. I'm listening to a lecture series on the Ottoman Empire and yesterday it covered Sultan Abdul Hamid II's effort to modernize the empire. The lecture introduced me to Colmar von der Goltz and his efforts (along with many other German and European officers) to help modernize the Ottoman army. The way the Germans hock that rifle at the Ottomans is very indicative of Germany's benign contempt for the failing Ottoman Empire. Sadly, it looks like those Ottoman rifles were outclassed real soon. Also, regarding finances of the Ottoman Empire, they had defaulted on their international debt in 1875, so I'm pretty certain that no one was gonna loan them money while they were still sorting out that mess. By world war I, that debt was eating up 30% of the Ottoman budget.

I am not sure, but I doubt we had any good rifles that were proper for the needs of an empire to adopt as standard issue for a foreign nation at that particular moment. I feel like it was mainly our handguns and a few automatic or semiautomatic fire arms that we had anything worthy of using. I mean, around that time they just then realized bolt actions were the way to go, and were most suited for a manually operated weapon best suited to endure whatever the military would experience in war. This was all in a relatively short amount of time too. To me that just feels like there is no way in hell for companies and any inventors to have gotten proficient and knowledgeable enough in what makes a good bolt action yet. To me it feels like they were like halfway there (They were getting there), and only certain companies and individuals that might've known enough to what makes a bolt action, and what type of things work best. I think most of the companies and inventors by that point were catering to a market that was not into the bolt actions, too. I surmise it was literally the semi-automatic rifles and lever action rifles was where you might find a good place to adopt, or begin working with the developer to improve and modify their weapon where it finally becomes "perfect." ("perfect" being a completely subjective term. "Perfect" is really referring to what kind of product you might get as a finished result depending on who's the potential buyer willing to spend enough cash and time on it, and while whatever crap along the way that could come a long and act like a wrench thrown into the cog during the process.)

I was waiting to see if it'd be mentioned, but how does fouling work with this gun? I was always under the impression that small bore blackpowder cartridges foul too quickly to be practical, though maybe thats more in the 6-8mm range. You'd think after a magazine fired that you'd start having issues. I'd think it would also be an issue with the 71 and 71/84. Was there a specific cleaning method/procedure/tools that was implemented with these guns?

Were you able to gather some reference about the Serbian Mauser 1880/07 converted to 7mm? Information seems to be scarce just like the 1887 converted to 7.65mm. But it had a protruding single-stack magazine unlike the converted 1887, with an added pseudo-locking lug of some sorts at the bolt rail.

You need to wear a Helmet, in period, with a beard rescape to include a twisty mustachio, and a monocle, maybe a pipe like Sherlock.. Othias can dress up too, if he wants ..
