A wonderful rifle. I just bought a Mauser Gewehr 71, got it 2 days ago in the mail. It's made in 1879 in Amberg, all matching numbers. Even the screws match. Everything is numbered. The rifle is in good condition with a good barrel. I have been looking for a Gewehr 71 for many years, finally found one. A great addition to my collection of Mauser's and other guns from pre-WW1 to WW2.

I absolutely love your coverage of the lesser known pieces of the war, such as this 70s classic. Guns like the '98 Mauser and the SMLE might have been very common at the front, these older designs show not only the real development of firearms technology in the last decades of the 19th century, but also the sheer desperation of a war on the scale of WWI. While all of your deep dives are interesting, letting even experienced gun enthusiasts learn more about the history, these videos are perhaps my favorites, and really highlight just how great C&Rsenal is.

I had a Mauser 1871/84; the second version featuring the under barrel tube magazine (Alfred Von Kropatschek, designer) I believe. As it happens, the store at which I found it also sold me what I suspect were the last two boxes (20 count) of ammunition (made by a Canadian company) loose in Christendom. Fired a few, it worked and shot well. Sold it off later in what I now recognize as a fit of stupid.

I have watched each rifle show up to this one (so far) and a few out of order before going back to the beginning. My wife thinks I am a little nutty - but she gets it. I love that it is so accessible. I love that there is no politics. I especially love that Mae is such a good sport as well as a competent marks(wo)man. The technology description is awesome - I understand riles so much better now. When I was making the CAD model, I noted a few additional alterations to the gun in the blueprints that you didn't mention; figured I'd put them here for completeness' sake: 1. Coil springs were added to the rear (flip-up) battle sight, straddling its screw, to apply a bit more friction and keep it from moving as much under recoil. This can be seen at 37:53 in the video. 2. There's a left-side lug on the striker which partially works to keep that piece aligned, and also keeps the firing pin from rotating. In the later models, this is a threaded piece with a hole that lines up with another hole on the striker; I'm unclear on what it was changed *from* but it seems to have been an integral part in the earlier version. 3. Some of the thicknesses seem to have been changed on the trigger/sear spring, not sure if it was made thicker or thinner. While the gas-deflection flange on the rear of the firing-pin nut *looks* like an add-on, and it definitely was on the Gewehr 88, it actually is original to the system on the 71, as far as I can tell.

Damn... othias gave ya the hard truth lol. Seriously guys, these guys are doing what we wish we could do... or atleast that's the truth for myself, these rifles and all rifles give you a feel, and as a collector that likes too use his collection, I understand what he means. I like handling older rifles, the new budget rifles of today are more accurate, lighter, and alot cheaper, but todays rifles dont give you the impression these do, and older rifles do, and that impression can be powerful. I'd much rather handle, shoot and talk about the older stuff than todays stuff.. well... for the most part. I would rather have 1of these rifles than 10 of todays sub $500 rifles... todays Winchester model 70, Sako 85 and rifles alike.. well thats a different thing. Truth be had I love all rifles, but I feel that rifles like the Savage Axis, Ruger American, Remington 783 or the 700ADL sold at Walmart and alike guns are great, but rifles like the ones mentioned above (win 70, sako 85 ) are just doing a better job at funtioning at what my idea is of what my perfect rifle shoud be.. but they have their place. I however own both, but i find myself shooting my sako, than i do my Ruger American, but i do like too use my Ruger for load development and then fine tune it too any of firearms of same caliber/cartridge. If im going hunting i find myself grabbing my model 70 or my sako, then my ruger or Remington 783. Not because they dont serve the purpose but because the 70 and 85 have a nicer feel. Every gun has a "feel" of it and some "feel" superior too others, but im a sucker for wood and blued steel
Mid night for me when this was posted, Sadly have to wait until tomorrow to watch it.

IIRC that was a problem with early smokeless rifles, not BP like this gun. Not saying it didn't happen, as a matter of fact it's mentioned in this video that the Mauser 1871 did have a few features to protect the user in the event of a ruptured case.
