Tony Todd, the guy who played Candyman (well, the real Candyman) was really iffy about shooting the scene where he's covered in bees. He was able to negotiate it that he got $1000 for every bee sting, ending up with a $23,000 bonus by the end of the shoot.

Candyman was setting Helen up to be an infamous killer so that she's remembered and talked about, living forever like he does. If he wanted her dead like the others he'd have just killed her and been done with it. He was in love with her because she could be a descendant of the woman he died for in the 1800s

It's amazing how much a good score can add to a movie. The pipe organ, piano, and operatic voices give Candyman that classic, creepy, old gothic feel that stays with you long after the credits roll. And Trevor deserved exactly what he got!

Saw this in the theater in 92. Walking out to my car, I saw a couple in their car looking in the rearview mirror chanting "Candyman, candyman, candyman..." When they said it the fifth time, I slammed my fists down on the trunk lid and shouted "Whatta you want?" They both jumped, the guy got out of the car and hollered at me. I just threw him the devil's horns and kept walking.

I saw this in a flea pit cinema, alone, on a mid afternoon showing. I was the only person in the room and I sat centre front row for the leg room. Tony Todd's voice coming out of a buzzy, cheap-assed dolby surround system, with one speaker directly over my head... I swear I could feel his breath on my neck everytime he spoke. It was fucking awesome. The male toilets in the cinema weren't too different from the ones on Cabrini Green, either. Added to the experience. Still one of my favourite films. The near constant musical score, the romance, the horror. Magical movie.

I grew up in the projects in Detroit and there is no way I would have crawled through that hole in the bathroom wall for on reason only COCKROACHES. Those bugs give me the creeps. This movie was better than I remembered. I think the last time I saw it was when it came out. Any time I see Tony Todd in a movie though I think of Candyman. I watched a movie last night for about the fifteenth time and thought of J, the movie was Se7en. I am going to end my comment with this "Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew, cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two?"

....You are one sick puppy. But on a side note, if they do another sequel they'd add a scene where one of the side characters is hiding out in a movie theater. But he realized too late that it was a showing of "Willy Wonka" and everyone is singing along to that song.

What was the most terrifying thing in this movie was the moment Helen saw the video of herself a screaming “Murderer” while tied to the gurney. She saw him and of course he wasn’t on the video. It was at that moment I finally really understood what mentally ill people actually go through.

I remember trying to watch this back in 92 at the age 9. It took me at least three tries in 2 years to get through the whole movie. When I finally watched the whole thing I felt like I went through hell and back. Even though I had seen Chucky and Freddy, this felt like a whole new level of scary. To this day it creeps me out. Even the recent one that came out last year doesn't come close to the original. Love this movie!

Crazy to think that the story the two custodian ladies tell at the beginning of the movie was a true story you can look up - the real woman's name was Ruthie May McCoy and someone entered her apartment through the medicine cabinet and murdered her right there. This movie is fantastic, the Philip Glass score alone is worth the price of admission, but the tragic/gothic feel managing to update and bring it into modern America and its use of race and class, all just perfect. Candyman is a tragic character, a good man tortured and murdered simply for being in love with someone from a different race, who comes back to exact his revenge and becomes a mythical boogeyman for modern folks.

He wasn't killed for being with a different rays. He was killed for fuycking with a virgin. Rayp was invented as a property crime. Virginity was (still is) an asset with value. in the past, the woe-mayn could not consent to give up her virginity, only the parents could. So the whole concept of rayp was a woe-mayn having secs with someone for the first time, unwillingly or willingly, without her parents permission. And yes, lynchings would happen over this, in America or Europe or Asia or middle east, they'd kill over this property crime. Which is why the crime today is still so over-embellished as it is. Could rays have been a factor? Sure because it was clearly part of the history of this story being set in the time of social-raycial turmoil. That being said, rays needn't be a factor. PLENTY of guys have been killed by territorial fathers for stealing his daughter's virginity, and the color of skin had no factor in 99.999% of them.

A truly frightening movie! A real fear factor to add is to this movie is the area in where the majority of filming took place, which was actually a really dangerous part of Chicago, Cabrini Greens to be precise. The only way the cast and crew were able to safely film there was to pay off the local criminals and gangs and to merely use them as extras in the background of the movie for certain scenes. Another fear factor were the bees. The scenes with the bees were done with the help of entomology professor Norman Gary, so all the scenes with the Bees are 100% real, remember this movie was made in the 90’s so CGI wasn’t at that level of believability yet.

🐝 "I am the writing on the wall, the whisper in the classroom. Without these things, I am nothing. So now, I must shed innocent blood. Come with me." 🐝 Fun Fact: Director Bernard Rose had Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd take ballroom dancing classes together so they would have more of a romantic connection when playing their characters. The Letter Bee Fact: The bees were bred specifically for this movie. They needed to make sure that the bees were only twelve hours old, so that they looked like mature bees, but their stinger wouldn't be powerful enough to do any real damage. Bold And Brave Fact: In addition to allowing the filmmakers to cover his face with bees, Tony Todd actually agreed to film a scene in which he had a mouthful of bees--and that, too, was all real. He told TMZ that he wore a dental dam to prevent any bees from sliding into his throat--which doesn't mean that he didn't suffer a sting or two or 23, to be exact, over the course of three Candyman movies. Tony Todd negotiated a bonus of $1,000 for every bee sting he suffered during filming.

Great reaction! I feel this movie is important. Candyman makes damn sure that the community never forgets their roots, their pain, and their story. It can also function as a reminder of the horrors and struggles for people of color, especially those in impoverished communities. While Helen IS sticking her nose into stuff that should probably be left alone, she is at least looking to document the actual voices and stories of an ignored group of people. The other academic and her husband focused only on the origin story of the past, and the series of brutal Cabrini Green murders, as a way to make a broad generalization and exploit and showcase the culture, with regard to those instances of brutality ( in that judgy, condescending way that many white academics do, either intentionally or completely by accident) and thereby creating the generalized false narrative of a whole community being brutal... ......but SHE wants to know how this impacts the lives of * these* living breathing, working people in the community.....right now. Does it frighten them? How does it impact their lives day to day? She isn't afraid to go to the places that smell and are physically dangerous in order to make the point that we all have myth, and this is what unites us. She is sitting and LISTENING to people that others ignore due to poverty or race. While her initial reaction is to feel it is "myth" and as such not true, she learns better (obviously) and becomes a part of that myth....and she becomes an important and respected part of said myth. We know this given that the ENTIRE community shows up to her funeral. Additionally she is seen haunting her own, very white, building, as, like Candyman, she was innocent and persecuted for things that she shouldn't have been. In this lifetime she is the one who is burned, balancing the sort of soul dept/soul karma (I am trying to figure out how to say this in a way that makes sense). The film is beautiful. The Glass score is amazing. Tony Todd is ethereal.....and as toxic as he might be (lol) it has a sort of weird romantic gothic elegance. Unfortunately, the overall themes are still relevant today. It is a timeless classic and a diamond among horror films (be they "white" or "black" horror films). The Peele remake missed the mark entirely.

If the people are ignored, they're ignored by their own. This sort of rhetoric is what leads to self-oppression. It's not whyt peole's job to represent, document, record, or represent blayck history or culture or voices. No one was left to suffer or ignored, unless they did it to themselves. You're seeing what you want to see. Notice how you didn't mention that the people in the ghetto were suffering more at the hands of their own culture/peers than whtyes or the candyman combined? In fact, it was the culture of endless violence and disregard for standards that allowed Candyman the spiritual serial killer to exist unseen by society because it was virtually identical in its degeneracy and barbarity as the culture around it. Take Candyman and put him in a convent or a non-crime-tolerated community and the ghostbusters are there before his ghostly ass is 2 years old. This type of skewed self-reaffirming victimhood nonsense IS the institutionalized oppression American blaycks have selfishly foisted upon their own children. More than enough lohser tokens in movies/books/tv shows written by whytes but forced by raysyst quotas to represent a group of people too lazy to write their own books/shows/media (a few rare gems exempted, and kudos to them for rising above their cultural standards). If it weren't for whytes, American blaycks wouldn't even know their own history beyond 60 years ago except what's graffitied on slum walls. Quit blaming and learn to take personal accountability. Quit making excuses. People far more oppressed AND far more violently devastated than American blaycks have risen out of their past troubles within 50 years or less (which the first 2-3 generations after American salyvery did, rising like a comet of strong blayk fahthers, until the lohser self-oppression culture of single blayk mohthers took over). Whole empires can and have risen from broken origins in a span of a century or less. You are where you are because of YOU, your parents, and your grandparents being losers/winners which all led to where you where born and raised and where you are presently. Maybe you should hate the culture that teaches youths to only care about their own urges/wants/interests and not seek the approval of their parents/grandparents, which also means they're so selfish they only care about themselves and not they're children/grandchildren (if you don't care about the past, you don't really care about the future either). You can't be selfish and selfless simultaneously. Either you give up yours for your family, or you give up your family for yourself. The cultures that put family first set up generational wealth and think about the welfare of descendants yet unborn, and their descendants, and so on, and strategize and plan accordingly. Selfish victim-obsessed scapegoating lohsers think only about their own position/condition/wants/desires instead of doing only what would improve the lives of family (both present and children to come in next generations). Quit insulting the strong blayk meyn and woe-meyn of slayvery and post-slayvery times by comparing them to the pathetic mess of perpetual victims that exists today, the majority of whom can't be bothered to maintain the lowest standard of employment at the same place for a year or longer because (insert self-serving reason) - clearly they're thinking of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren every time they decide to quit their "unfair" job within 90 days (after all, being happy now is more important than moving to a better environment/culture before the next generation is born) This movie was excellent in comparing cultures. In one culture, violence, barbarity, and lack of standards is so scarce that a monstrous ghostly serial killer from ages past fits right and can barely be discerned from the modern inhabitants. In the other culture, it is immediately a stark violation of decency and standards and the whyte culture and its systems immediately set to work to find the culprit and sort out the problem, even though it's not their culture, their neighborhood, or their problem - they work to fix it anyway (because: standards of tolerance). Unfortunately because it is a supernatural story, the systems of the whyte culture (police, academia, hospitals, etc.) make mistakes and misjudgments in their attempts at intervention. The story doesn't delve too far into the other (non-ghetto) cultures because the story's setting revolves around urban decay. This comparison of modern reality to fictional mostrosity is best demosntrated by the public bathroom scene where violent raysyst thugs literally emulate the candyman legend to terrorize and savage people "in their territory," including the whyte "outsider." The young kid who knew the story of the bathroom butchery could have witnessed a very real act of non-supernatural barbarism by local residents, or it could have been the monster actually manifesting - the fact that it could go either way is a VERY poignant critique of the culture of humans living around the monster. While this is a great horror film, the greater horror is the culture that is not fiction but very real, and the selfish humans who perpetuate it upon their children by accepting the unhealthy ways of their own cultural rearing. Like the thuhgs and gayngbayngers plaguing modern urban cesspools, The Candyman epitomizes barbarity and random violence and mayhem. There is no logic to his villainy, just villainy for the sake of self-indulgence and self-gratification. He attacks meyn, woe-meyn, dogs, babies, whytes, blaycks. Doesn't matter. Savage, socially archaic, selfish, opportunistic, violent. Modern urban decoy epitomized in a ghost story.

I'm an atheist. I don't believe in God. I don't believe in magic. I don't believe in ghosts. And yet, to this day, I'm 51 years old and I will never look in a mirror and say Candyman 5 times in a row. That's how fkin' good this movie is. The scene with Tony Todd in the parking garage was so powerful. He literally paralized that bitch with just his presence and voice. Slickback ain't got sh!t on Candyman. The remake is an abomination and the ultimate disrespect to this perfect horror film. If I could find a sliver lining I'd say watching it only makes one appreciate the original even more.

The man that wrote the original piece this film is based on is named Clive Barker (one of my favorite authors). I'm new to your channel so I'm not sure if you have seen it or not, but another one of his works you should check out is Hellraiser. A reboot is being released on Hulu a few days from now (October 7th). Barker not only directed the original, but wrote the screenplay and the novella it was based on (The Hellbound Heart). The special effects are dated by today's standards, but in many ways Hellraiser revolutionized horror. It along with another film he wrote and directed (Nightbreed) are my favorite films. I highly suggest giving them a watch.

Candyman, in death, be came a legend. And urban ghost story. So long as people whisper his stories and believe in some small way that they are true, he continues. Immortal. But, if people begin to doubt, if they stop the whispers, he will be forgotten. And then truly die. And so, if that happens, he must perform horrific acts. He must shed blood, to make them fear again. To make them *believe* again.
