In today's video I revisit a location in Canmore, Alberta, Canada that I scouted in winter. Using perspective blending to increase the size of background and foreground into relation to each other feels a little like cheating!

Thanks mate, I think it's a technique used more than we think! Super useful in that sort of situation.

With AI these days, I feel like we need to apply to photographs the same sort of analysis we used to save for movies -- was it captured in camera or was it generated by computer? Two perspectives captured in camera while you were on site, blended to match what your eye saw in real life, seems fair to me!

Got to use what tools we can to keep up I suppose!

Personally i don't consider it cheating (although some competitions don't allow it), especially in the situations when the photographer is open about it and when it's done "realistically" - and by that i mean you combine a 16mm with a 24 or 28mm shot, not a 16mm with a 150mm element captured. Nice video and good luck with the new tripod

Interesting it isn't allowed in some competitions. Doesn't seem all that different from using normal lens distortion to elongate a mountain on edge of frame.

Simon: Loved this video! Loved both of the shots you took too. I'm afraid to put my Really Right Stuff tripod ($$$) legs into the water. I ruined a tripod doing that. Got gritty sand inside the legs. Finally leaving for Canadian Rockies next week and spending a week in Canmore as our base for Banff,Louise, Moraine, Minnewanka, etc. then moving up to Jasper for another week). I wrote to you about location for Bow Lake turnout. Several questions! Please give me the location for this creek and view (2) I understand how to process focus stacking but not perspective blending. Can you point the way to a You Tube explanation? Dale (Miami)

Hey Dale, Thanks for watching! I'd honestly be processing these pretty much the same way as a focus stack. You're just masking out one layer to show the one underneath with the focused, more zommed in perspective. Head for the Three sisters creek trail in Canmore. Park in a street called hubman landing and you'll probably need to take a look at maps but as you can see from the video it's pretty easy to find if you head towards the stream that runs into mineral springs on a map. Love Canmore. Amazing how the same place can look so different in different seasons. Love the tiny waterfall with the mountains in the background. I also use a Leofoto as my travel tripod. Last year The Camera Store had a bunch of tripods on display. You're lucky to still have a brick and mortar camera store nearby. There was a nice camera store here where I live, but the internet put it out of business years ago. So, it's pretty much B&H for me now.

Hey Simon, FYI it is a private property and there is bunch of no trespassing signs in the area. Yes, locals just ride bikes and walk that area all the time. but there was even a time when TSMV had a security parked there at that little bridge down the creek. They didn’t let people come into the area. So I’m not sure if they were happy seeing the video promoting it online 🤨

I did hear it was a little contested. Apparently it's been set aside for development but no development has started yet or is due to start and as you say locals use it all the time. Also hard to tell what part is or isn't private property. From what I understand the locals aren't happy about it! Thanks for pointing it out though.

@@simoncennals from what I know Town of Canmore was ordered by the Provincional Tribunal to allow TSMV with the project last year but now Town wants to overturn approval. It is a long process I can tell. It is a massive piece of land in question, wildlife corridors are there. Some trails including Three sisters connector, Loki are on the TSMV land but they allow traffic on these trails. But again last year they had a barriers and signs for period of time saying no entrance. So “legally” we couldn’t get to very popular Highline trail from this side.

Excuse me, you mentioned in your film that there is a place where you can shoot the train, but I forgot which film it is, can you tell me?

Morants curve is probably what you mean. Not sure I've mentioned it in a video though!
