Dr. Yasmin Hurd is the Director of the Addiction Institute within the Mount Sinai Behavioral Health System as well as the Ward Coleman Chair of Translational Neuroscience and Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. Dr. Hurd is an internationally renowned neuroscientist whose translational research examines the neurobiology of drug abuse and related psychiatric disorders. Her research exploring the neurobiological effects of cannabis and heroin has significantly shaped the field. Using multidisciplinary research approaches, her research has provided unique insights into the impact of developmental cannabis exposure and epigenetic mechanisms underlying the drug’s protracted effects into adulthood and even across generations. Dr. Hurd’s basic science research is complemented by clinical laboratory investigations evaluating the therapeutic potential of novel science-based strategies for the treatment of opioid addiction and related psychiatric disorders including pioneering work with cannabidiol.
Today on the show we discuss: how cannabis changes the brain, why it messes with your ability to manage stress, why cannabis is more dangerous today, what must happen to prevent kids from abusing cannabis, what cannabis does to mental health, whether or not it’s a gateway drug, how recover from cannabis addiction and more.

10th day for me. Luckily I am blessed with a loving supportive family. I was a heavy user for 20 years, I quit because I finally grew up. finally realized I was living a life that wasn't real. Quit to see how improvements in my physically training and sports will be. the first several days were brutal, insomnia, migraines , nausea and really pissed off. These days I'm feeling much better, thinking clearly and my workouts are actually much improved. The DREAMS are unreal. getting better sleep and my energy is through the roof. Mentally its a long road, but i feel unstoppable and much more confident in who I am. My family notices the difference and that's the important thing to me!! Stay the course, you can do it. Videos like these help me out so much! Aloha from Hawaii!!!!

@@kathleenking47 you are right. I think canibus helps identify things like paranoia. Not everyone gets it when they consume it. Also, different strains do different things. Sativa is more high energy and a mind high- or cerebral. Indica is more of a couch lock and will make you less inclined to do things or it makes you lazy. Personally I use it to calm down and settle in after work. I still function and get things done but with the edge dulled.

Several "Oh crap" moments for me while watching this. Thank you, Doug and Dr. Hurd. I have pickled my body with THC (every form) for the past 15 years. I am a 46F (never used pot as a kid) and I am so over this addiction! I hate it! I quit cold turkey several years ago, had horrible mental side effects, insomnia, chills, etc for SEVERAL MONTHS. I tested hot 4 months after quitting, got all discouraged and went right back to the THC. Now, for the past 4 weeks, I am using CBD (0% THC) wax & CBD flower mixed with measured out THC flower and SLOWLY tapering off THC. I want to be quit so bad and I will! So far the tapering is helping HUGELY. Still having some discomfort mentally but one day at a time!

Very shortly after watching this video, I smoked a few CBD flower joints for appx 4 weeks off and on whenever I had cravings or was hanging with friends who smoked. AFTER 4 weeks I just lost motivation to smoke CBD, lost motivation for a lot of things. I am now 60 days quit. My official quit date was March 28th. That is when I quit THC flower, edibles, dabbing and vaping. Depression has been very bad. Zero energy. Insomnia and nightmares every night. I don't have cravings because I feel so gross. I know it is from 15+ years of heavy abuse. I choose each day to fight knowing someday I will feel normal again. I am very anti THC nowadays. Hardest 'drug' I've ever quit.

This is some real talk. I would encourage open discussion about cannabis and other drugs. My parents never had any talk at all with me and just tolerated my smoking pot from Jr High into college and beyond. I agree that the potency today is worlds stronger than the 90s. That’s one reason I quit in my mid 40s. It wasn’t even fun anymore. I totally grew out of it when I got sick of the other 40 somethings who were going nowhere in life. Mediocrity at its finest. But how they love their pot and defend their right to smoke. It’s a mentality that can be nipped in the bud (no pun intended) when a parent or guardian fosters an open environment where a kid (and friends) are comfortable talking about their experiences outside the home and they are able to have discussions that allow young people to come to healthy and beneficial conclusions on their own.

its different for everyone. Ive smoked weed for 35 years. I am in a 16 year relationship, I have owned a successful restaurant for 20 years. I am trying to retire early. Weed has helped me to manage stress, mood and sleep. I dont drink or do drugs. Alcohol is the worst. I switched to edibles in the last few years so I could eliminate the health risks of smoking. Its not all bad for every person like youre saying. Snoop dog seems to have done alright for himself and so have I. As far as the kids , Im not advocating it for them. They need to be focused and creating their futures. This did not appear to be a kids show. This is an adult talk about it.

Led vs hps/mh. Led gives a more pointed high because it's lacking compared to a full spectrum light such as high pressure sodium or metal halide. This is all a cash grab from what I'm gathering. It's not marijuana. It is industrial hemp. THCA does not get you high like THC does - it gets you a 'buzz' but it is not the same. If you don't believe me do this: put some hemp buds on a cookie sheet. Cover with foil. Bake at 290f for 7 minutes. Smoke it. Flavor is reduced but you actually get high and don't get a headache. Smoke the THCA bud without baking and the carboxyl groups become smog which quickly gives a headache especially if smoked fast and hard.

I worry about the legalization of cannabis and the effect on young people since the bain doesn’t stop developing until age 25. I started smoking at age 14 and didn’t really stop until age 60- last year (with gaps in between). I was born in 1962 and believed the false notion that it was only psychologically addictive! Wrong. Thankfully we raised a wonderful daughter in spite of my (“controlled”) use when she was small. I was lucky to be mostly a stay at home mom (we didn’t have smart phones then) and totally dedicated my life to her- I love being a mom. I stopped drinking 10 years ago, but then relapsed with pot during covid. It was a nightmare withdrawing from it! I was really shocked. So grateful to be sober, thanks to 12 step programs!

To my understanding this could be primary causes of newer cases of Schizophrenia and Psychosis without necessarily having genetic vulnerability or a disease that was laid dormant, which means everyone who uses this for 'medical purposes only' will have one disqualification, which is the mental health, this in the longer term raises a risk of psychiatric illnesses than other substances, combined with psilocybin mushrooms, but as a psychoactive derivative it is the mildest but it's consequences are harsh. Only in the last years i'm realizing that i have believed in a myth that weed is absolutely harmless and has been banned for wrong reasons, but no, when a law makes a draft and enforces a law it's there for a reason, unreasonable laws aren't enforced, it may of have been banned due to political interest, but public health wasn't concern here, i as well thought that 'hey they ban it because we can't tax it and don't need' but no, public health is something else.

Whatever the substance, when it stops serving you, and you become a slave to it, it's time to quit. I would add that the legalization of marijuana makes it much more difficult to abstain. Depending on the state/town/city you live in, there might very well be an almost surreal density of pot shops. I wonder how they all even stay in business... One thing is for sure, the industry depends on the recruitment of new users. IMO it is on it's way to becoming just a dangerous (and insidious) as the tobacco industry ever was.

It's strange how they're pushing weed these days like it's some healthy supplement. I've known people who went from smoking weed in the 70s and early 80s to being on crack during the crack era.

While good for you, your testimony is not good for those in denial. THC has variability by person, and some percentage of people are like you, but that's not the case for far too many who will not recognize the frogs water getting boiled untill it's highly problematic, as they've used the rare cases of less addiction and less sensitivity (perhaps in your case) as if it applies to them as well, when it doesn't.

Freedom of choice. It is beneficial for some. There are times when it is helpful. It is a tool. I've seen it stop someone from suicide. It helps my brother with his MS and a friend with Parkinson's. There is no one size fits all. Prison and fines for using it only hurts people and unnecessarily puts folks in Jail. Work on your own body and don't legislate mine.

Your personal experience means nothing. MADD give a presentation on the dangers of drinking and driving. I say “we’ll I’ve been drinking and driving every day for 40 years and I’ve never hurt so much as a squirrel. You’re(not your) wrong.” My experience may be a data point but it’s not the data on the dangers of drinking and driving.

So do a side by side of alcohol no one seems to be worried about the long term effects nor the lives lost from over doses. I am pro cannabis, why you can choose to drink or not, THC is much safer. As a veteran that is offered big pharma death cocktails as well as the ability to drink alcohol at will because it's legal. My chances of death just due to meds alone is higher. Who has died from THC??? Do the study and compare to other schedule drugs and alcohol. No one thinks that this is the weed of the 70's and 80's.

The problem is that people are starting to smoke 24/7 and that’s NOT healthy. Hence why there’s a surge of more people suffering from these withdrawals. I’m NOT against weed, I partake all the time, but I do respect and understand how it affects people and if people are saying they’re having a hard time with it, then it’s our job to look into it.

I don't understand why I don't like it, then... Especially what you get these days, is far too strong and debilitating. I don't understand why people call it a "soft drug", (whatever that conceptualise)... I think it's foolish to demonise the use of any drug, however. Not evangelise them, either way. Cannabis is useful in a medical context, just like the other old "natural" drugs we still use. Like opiates etc. But, I think adults should have their own choice, but it's best to be careful and honest with yourself... (Btw. some of the strongest and most nasty toxins we know, are natural products from other organisms.)

I agree with this At the same time it’s not for everyone. Some people say it makes them more relaxed while others it gives them bad anxiety…I think it’s just a base to base case. I started using it for pain because I had a messed up hand and it definitely helped with the pain. I noticed my anxiety got worse and it sucked because I liked marijuana for pain relief. I wish I was one of those people who got the relaxation benefits 😅

before I even waste any time watching this. does this Lady or gentleman demonize cannabis? just curious. if not I'll watch. I can't stand it when people with no actual experience using the herb demonize the plant. it could literally save the planet. makes better clothes, better shoes, better oil, better money. we literally could stop cutting down trees, and use hemp for paper. it's a huge cash crop that could save the farmers of America. I'm in the middle of a 30 day detox. but the plant has been nothing but good to me. hemp for victory!! it is good to take a few months off here and there. and I wouldn't do anything everyday. moderation is key.

Weed is dependent on the smoker , some can handle it and some can't and that's with everything in life . I've smoked for 35 years and I don't have any issues . What a load of rubbish , why don't they talk about pharmaceutical drugs that people take for anxiety. There are those in our communities who have underlying mental health issues and when they smoke weed oh! It's the weed that's the problem , no it's the person . If its not for you and you have mental health problems then give it up or don't start .

This was a boring podcast with little to no new details, science is lacking on THC, one important thing to note is that as she speaks she lumps small doses and huge doses together which is beyond silly as most things will make a U curve if you take too much. Don't be run out by fear folks, if you have heightened anxiety try lowering the dose/ taking a break for a few days and returning with a lower dose. It's nice to throw the word expert in here but for people who have done their due diligence and looked over the studies this is mostly useless as their is very little good science that really says THC is harmful.

There are NO benefits to marijuana.
@emersiv5631
@emersiv5631 9 күн бұрын
It should just be treated the same as alcohol. Obviously nobody should be drinking alcohol all day everyday same with Marijuana. Weed may last longer in the system but I do believe the impairment isn’t the same. Alcohol makes it extremely hard to do motor functions and marijuana is similar but marijuana also increases focus. Don’t get me wrong it’s still hard to do things that require balance,depth perception,awareness….but marijuana can help in certain situations that require focus. Alcohol just impairs everything with no benefit. I’m not saying marijuana is a better option…it just has some use cases where it’s beneficial. I do agree that marijuana can affect stress & anxiety. That’s why I think it should be used just like alcohol. It should be used occasionally just for “fun”. I just figured out all this recently. I noticed smoking weed was just making my anxiety worse yet it was still better than alcohol for me. I still like using it occasionally but only as a relaxing substance or when at a party hanging out with friends. I feel like it mainly has to do with the environment your in as it just exacerbates feelings & situations in your environment. It’s still enjoyable just used correctly in certain environments. Both Alcohol & weed are still bad for your body overall just use both sparingly. ( I originally used Marijuana for pain which YES it helped a lot) that said it still has some benefits.
