Just some things I'd like to point out, seeing as it doesn't seem like anyone else did. 1:04-1:44, I think the fact that Nightmare Moon didn't try to outright kill the Mane 6 is because Luna was effectively fighting from the inside. Seeing as she clearly wasn't herself the moment she became Nightmare Moon. 2:37-2;49, it may be supplementary material, but the 4th issue of FIENDship is Magic does pretty much explain where Luna got that ability from. Granted, she learned it when she wasn't herself. But there's nothing wrong with application of a learned skill in a beneficial way. And as for my opinion as to whether Luna would make a good ruler or not, yeah. I believe she could too. It only seems to me that the only thing stopping from ruling full-time is the fact that, in her own spotlight comic, she pretty much says "How do you DO it?!!!" to Celestia towards the end of said comic. Meaning that she found ruling alone to be pretty stressful. But I don't think she'd not want to rule in Celestia's stead should something happen to Celestia. Whether such a thing is Celestia's death, rendered physically or mentally unfit to rule for a while, or even another "Nightmare Moon incident" happening with Celestia making the transformation herself in some way.

I think Luna could definitely make a good ruler if something happened to Celestia, because she's clearly learned her lesson from the Nightmare Moon incident, and she truly does care about her subjects, even if they do sleep through her night.

Another piece of evidence is on season 6 episode 1 part 2. Even though she is still Nightmare Moon and has band Celestila to the moon, Nightmare seems to get her people what she wants and when she says it and manages to rebuild her old castle.

Candid, I recommend you looking at the IDW comics to help round out your Luna ruling theory. They recently had her doing the day shift for her micro and it was an interesting romp to see how she fared when dealing with both the pleasurable "Fun"aspects of ruling during the day as well as the boring, drudged that also comes with it. As for Celes, I again point to the comics, since they already had a micro of her and seem to be having the Mane 6 interacting with her and Luna a lot more then the show. As for my own view. From everything I have seen, I think Luna makes for a good leader for the night, but for both, I think she is lacking in certain areas. Being as her elements as shown in PTS eps, she wielded Honesty, Loyalty, and Laughter, which is frankly a very interesting combo. She makes for someone who can listen and give a truthful opinion, sticks to her family and people that she cares for and wants to fun with her subjects. However, she lacks the patience to deal with things she doesn't want, (boring paper and meetings, come to mind), the ability to have tact when dealing with anything and anyone seems to be another of her short comings. Finally while she does work hard to please, she sadly has yet to learn how to control her feeling around the public. A leader must know when and how to show emotion and when not to. Luna has yet to learn this, she is far to honest with showing how she thinks and feels about things and would be easily manipulated by others if left to her own devices. I think given training, Luna could rule alone if she had to, but I don't think she would make for a better ruler then Celes nor do I think in the long run would she want to rule alone. Given Celes connection with Kindness, Gene and Magic, this boost her diplomatic potential, her empathy as well as ability to want to give and express all of her subjects potential, and holding herself as a leader, just as the other Magic barrier has done. Her major flaw is her lacking in the hard hoof approach that Luna would go about ruling in, thus making her look soft in front of others. However due to her powers with Magic, her ability to be diplomatic, she has been able to outsmart those who would see her for what she really is. A mother figure ruler. For what its worth, I think Cele is a better leader with Luna around and between the two, I think a better Equestria will bloom in a bigger and better place, from her return.

Ooh, a very nice reply! Yes, I do want to get into the comics soon. Not only do I agree that they'd help with analyzing topics like this one, but I've also just heard good things about them. And I don't actually disagree with any of your points, you in fact made very good and valid ones. I may be a Luna fanboy, but I do agree that with her as a solo ruler, things would not be perfect. However, I don't think Equestria would be any worse off with her, either. Likely, the problems would just be different. There's a very nice (but unfinished) fan fiction entitled Dear Princess Luna which retells the beginning of Friendship is Magic by swapping Luna and Celestia's places. Celestia is the one that turns evil, and Luna banishes her to the sun and takes over as the sole ruler. The author does a great job showing how things would have been changed under her rule, and they match up rather well with what you are suggesting. For example, magic has not advanced as far under Luna as they did with her sister, but Luna is also very much engaged in the day-to-day lives of her subjects, and often works right alongside them, so she is regarded less as ruler, and more as a motherly figure. And, like you suggested, she also does not have the patience or tact to play the same long gambits as Celestia. Rather than--for lack of a better term--tricking Twilight into learning friendship by making sure she would have to meet the rest of the Mane 6, Luna pretty much takes Twilight to them and says "Here, you HAVE to befriend these ponies". So, yeah, with training, Luna could be a good solo ruler, and I agree that she likely would not want to, she seems to enjoy being with her sister again, but as to whether or not she could if she ever HAD to? I believe Luna would be able to pull it off, despite the adversities.

cannedcream I can agree with your points, though with the long gambit, that dose bring an interesting question, Sunset Shimmer. Being as she was Celes, student before Twi, she could have been Luna, if we're replacing events one for one. I do wonder what type of relationship would Luna and her foster? Would she had ran rouge if her possible destiny had been told to her, would Luna have shut her down before she rose to power? Or better yet, the fan canon relationship of her and Trixie might be an interesting one. Illusions and charm magic like Trixie, would fall into some of the types of magic that Luna seems to practices more then Celes, so maybe Trixie could have at one time been a possible choice for one of the elements.

Luna might not be able to rule alone because she might not have as much power as Celestia, don't get me wrong Luna is my favourite princess but as Luna stated herself as nightmare moon she was quite surprised that Celestia was able to rise and set both the sun AND the moon suggesting Luna would not be able rule alone and rise and set the sun and moon. If you don't agree with me I'm fine with that everyone has their own opinion. Btw I'm part of the peace core I don't want war between the two sisters.

I think luna would be great at ruling alone. Even when possessed by the nightmare forces she still couldn't hurt anypony (with the exception of the cliff but keep in mind her being possessed) and she is the only princess that trys to be social with her subjects. Making sure that they know her for her personality and not her rank. Only a princess pure of heart would take the time and effort to connect with her subjects on a personal level. So my answer is yes, she would be a great ruler.

Also you have to take into account her power to protect her citizens. I do believe that Luna is stronger than Celestia. While Celestia has control over the sun, Luna has control over the moon, countless stars, and she can enter the dreams/nightmares of others. Yes Celestia controlled both the day and night for the 1000 years that Luna was sealed on the moon, but I think that ever since Lunas return the nights have been more beautiful.

Instead celestia takes over and makes twilight , a young pony princess do it anyway. This can show celestia doesnt listen to her sister like she should. Though I have already replied before about 10 mouths ago, I would just like to restate my thoughts. Could Luna rule alone? Sure, I don't see any reason she couldn't. A better question is 'Should Luna rule alone'? My answer to this is no, no she should not. There is no reason for Celestia to be 'dethroned' and Luna placed as the sole ruler of Equestria, it is pointless and I feel could actually leave Equesria worse then it was before. While Luna could do a good job ruling alone, she does not have that 1000 years experience Celestia has and thus is at a huge disadvantage since 'being out of the loop' as it were does make a difference. More, in having Luna be the sole ruler of Equestia it would alienate her from those that are loyal to Celestia yet would otherwise offer their support and appreciation for her. Thus the idea would defeat the very goal Luna wishes. Why? Because ponies in Equestria respect Celestia, and having Luna take her down would only lead to ponies turning against her or even hating her. Consider that and know the above is largely why I dislike the very idea behind the Solar Empire and Lunar Republic.

Zauth Arida There was one of the official MLP:FiM comics, in which a challenge was made where Luna said she believed that ruling the day would be easy compared to what she did during the night. So... Celestia would allow Luna to take over her duties for the day and she went off to the spa. Yet, Luna would soon realize her older sister's schedule was completely filled. There was paperwork to sign, letters to read, political related meetings, social events, exc... by the end of the day she was realized she didn't want Celestia 'job' and much preferred hers. Because of how everything ended Luna was also left to take back her own duties, meaning she didn't have any sleep for a night to a day to a night. Laughs, leaves you to wonder how Celestia was able to do everything for a 1000 years. All in all though, if you are willing to consider the comics... Luna would not enjoy a full week of taking over for her older sister.

Perhaps so, but if we were to assume that Luna was able to travel the dreams of her subjects 1000 years ago... it arguably puts something of a plot hole in her backstory in becoming Nightmare Moon. This has been discussed elsewhere, and is perhaps something of old news so I wont go fully into it here but the question can be asked how Luna could have felt so alone and appreciated if she was helping ponies with their nightmares and troubles while they slept. Also, while Celestia may not be able to travel the realms of dreams she did for a 1000 years control the moon and watch over the night... to yah technically she did do Luna's job. A large part of it at least, all things considered. Especially since we don't know for certain if dream guardianship was one of Luna's responsibilities a 1000 years ago.

I think that there was an episode in doctor whooves adventures by squeak anon discussing about how Luna while in banishment did in fact have a kingdom of her own on the moon, but in order to protect her people she was forced to turn into the nightmare moon we see in season one by weird alien shadow things.

I think she would at least be better than Celestia. No offense to fans of her but 1/2 the time I feel that, and I think most fans will agree, she does things just to mess with people. There is no need for her to be cryptic 1/2 the time. Her "test" revolve around screwing with the lives of Twilight and her friends (albeit with (supposedly) the intention of bettering Twilight) when it seems like the same thing could be accomplished in a less over-complicated or risky way.

Did you see the way Luna looked after she was "un-corrupted", she was so guilty, she loves her sister with all her heart - and Celestia revealed to Twilight that every sun celebration was painful for her, she had to pretend to be happy when she was breaking her heart every year for 1000 years - there's no way either of them are going to let that happen again. They care too much for each other and for their people. If they had a disagreement, they would talk it over, and compromise.

Bud Charles I guess they want some division between the two. I notice a lot of people like Luna because they know the feeling of being un-loved by many or being in her situation or something. Celestia is not evil in anyway and has concerns to her subjects. Her action is questioning but I think its more of a build-of-character thing she does. Just like luna is able to go into peoples dreams I think Celestia has some special ability almost like that, maybe seeing the feather or something.

i think luna is like me when it come to learning social behaviour: pretty fast learner, which could also explain why she isnt cofused by technology, but when she is alone or there is under a special number of ponies around her, in the episode the one time only twilight was near her, she just dont uses the learned stuff. i didnt learn social behaviour like any other boy around, mostly because of my autism, well, instead i learned english, but when i was asked to learn it, i got the stuff people learn in some years all in a month. but when im alone or there are under three people who can hear me, i do stuff noone would dare to even think about in public. weird stuff...

My reasoning if she could rule alone: I don't think she could. No, I KNOW she couldn't. In the mini comic packs ( By hasbro themselves) Luna acts very full of herself, saying that she could rule both the day AND the night. Princess Celestia accepts that challenge, but warns Luna about how hard her job is. Luna still goes on with it and Celstia takes a day off, and in the end Luna begs Celestia to only rule the night again.

The way I look at it is this: even 'if' Luna could rule by herself I wouldn't want her too. Equestria was mean to be a diarchy, a duality of day and night/sun and moon. Sure Celestia ruled for 1000 years, but she didn't have any choice when she lost her sister to the darkness that was Nightmare Moon and forced to banished what was established as a great evil. Lauren Faust said the danger of Nightmare Moon was not just because of Eternal Night, but because she would have ushered in an era of evil. The comics also expand by showing Nightmare Moon to be something of a possessed Luna, a dark being from the moon that manipulates others into letting it take control. For me, it is either for the royal sisters to rule together... or not at all.

A play is a play though and it doesn't always show everything as well as the truth. Many things could have been changed due to time (and I mean as the centuries pass) Yes Celestia can correct things but who knows what goes on in her head. Luna was also gone for an entire season more than enough for her to become familiar with certain terms but still keeping the thee and thous. My proof she had communication problems is the second episode. Yes, obviously scared about what the ponies would think of her but she looks to Celestia for confirmation perhaps to make sure this was a good gesture or sign of some sort. I could just be grasping though but she didn't speak except for that few lines to Celestia. Even then it was kind of universal type thing. How many ways are there to say sorry? Moving on, taking time to learn things will take a long time, she may not have that long a time to learn something should something happen to Celestia. The olden days were also much harsher, though we can't assume that there were executions like how everyone writes about but Luna probably has a harsher way of dealing with things because at that time most of politics was bam! I'm the Princess, I'm immortal I know whats good for you so just take it! Like a force fed medicine. Now in the kingdom she has to develop a silver tongue like Celestia. The press and other media are basically waiting for some meat from her like a hungry hound. Just waiting for her to mess up. A silver tongue would be hard for her considering she was connected to honesty at one point and we have seen her be painstakingly blunt to a fault. Don't get me wrong! Luna is my all time fav too! But I think it will be a while yet before she can rule by herself. Perhaps with Twilight as an advisor. I see Twilight helping out Luna a whole lot by doing that. She doesn't care for royal duties but she loves learning and knows a lot. A perfect choice! Maybe...anyway those are my thoughts. Luna perhaps in a thousand years but not now.

Hi CC! I think that Luna WOULD make a good and fair ruler for all of Equestria, but how exactly do you think her subjects would adjust? Also, what if her stepping up to the throne was at the beginning of a major conflict/catastrophe? This is sort of the background for what (in my belief) is the best MLP fanfiction (that I have read). It is called Fallout Equestria and it is simply beautifully written. I highly suggest that you at least read the introduction. Anyway, have fun!

I suppose there isn't much chance to find out now that Princess Twilight is around to fill in if something should happen to Celestia. So far in season 4 we really haven't seen Twilight doing anything princess-y, and watching your video it occurs to me that her primary function might be simply hanging around as a backup. Considering Celestia's tendency to be defeated or imprisoned by every big villain that comes along, having a spare is probably a prudent policy. :)

You make a good point. Where as before Luna could step in her sisters shoes--er, hooves--It'll likely be Twilight now. So anyone hoping for that scenario will likely be out of luck. Still, I hope we see more of her. Both seeing her added into the intro, as well as the return of fan-favorite Derpy gives me hope that they know how popular Luna is and will be giving her an episode or two in the future.

YOu got onto the key point for Nightmare Moon's existence. Eternal night was not the goal but a means to an end. She wanted love an adoration but ponies feared her night thus fear her. By showing the night is not really fearful they would come to love the night and love her. While Celestia is a good ruler she always seems aloof. heck see the size differnce between the average pony and her and yeah she comes of as intimidating. She also seems to be the symbol of the nobility of the country. However Luna is more inline with the common pony. She did the voice because she thought it was expected of her and seems to relate easier than Celestia with them. heck i think her size is a deliberate choice so she has better realtions with the common pony. We know she can be as large as her sister if she wanted but her current size makes her more relatable.

Eternal night would eventually kill everyone. Ponies are herbivores, and 1000 years ago was pony medieval times. The sun was their warmth, their life, their existence. Without it, they couldn't grow food. Everyone starves and dies. Luna would have committed mass homicide.

Doing research on My Little Pony you see that in episode 1 and 2 Nightmare Moon's (Luna's) challenges bring the Mane Six closer. In Fall of the Crystal Empire, Luna is trapped and seeing Celestia hurt she is put in a pressure where she must change to protect her sister. You are not taking shame to anything but going on the side that is more loyal to the other.

cannedcream please do not diminish luna's character development. luna made a conscious decision to not lower the moon. then, and only then, was she attacked by the nightmare forces and became nightmare moon.

Brent Ramsten I would argue that the influence was already there beforehand, and the decision to not lower the moon was simply the final act that allowed the transformation to complete. And even if that were not the case, as you said, Luna has undergone development, and should be judged based upon how she is now, rather than how she was a thousand years ago.

While I think Luna would be a good ruler here's the question can she raise the sun along with the moon. Balance out the heat of the sun with the chill of the moon. I think if she can raise both the sun and the moon then everything would be set for her to be a solo ruler.

I think she could in time but she was imprisoned in the moon for a thousand years which also means she has a thousand years less experience ruling than Celestia and there's the fact that in order for Luna to rule alone something must have to happen to Celestia maybe even her death as I don't think Luna would ever willingly try to take control after what happened with Nightmare Moon

I do agree that she could make a great ruler, but that would be sometime in the future. I honestly think that she would need alot of help from her guards and Twilight to rule now. Sure, she's willing to jump in and help ponies, but I dont really think she's that aware of everything yet... idk how to put it... she would give in to the ponies really fast i think is what im trying to say, and subjects dont always knows whats best. they could for example ask her to get rid of, or ask her for permition to get rid of some kind of animal, then it turns out later that this animal was important for alot of stuff, like keeping away harmfull insect for example...??

Her main advantage as Royalty is in her being out and among the Ponies in person. the dark past doesn't give me anything. Luna can take up that role if and when it is required, for as long as required.

Luna's style allows her to intervene more personally in others' dilemmas than Celestia. This has a possible drawback: she could get bogged down by a problem, preventing her from addressing anypony else's other problems. She needs to know how to prioritize, and we don't know if she has those skills. Meh. Luna seems to have caught up by 'A Canterlot Wedding.' Luna has never raised or lowered the sun, however if Twilight can do it, so can Luna, who could learn to rule if Celestia was ever... out of the country. And why not? Diplomatics can't always come to Canterlot or Crystal City.

well I would say no because we don't know the effect nightmare moon had on the rest of the world and could lead other nations to think she is still evil (the fallout equestria effect if you will) and on top of that most of the government is most likely based around what celestia can and can't do so having to rework the entire government to fix a new monarch wile the old one is still kicking seems like a wast or resources to me.

Personally I think Luna would, on porpoise or accidentally create a ponfied version of Sparta. It may be more comfortable version just because ponies. but Luna seems Very protective of her ponies so she would take the slightest threat very personally. Without Celestia to hold her back I believe she would be quick to wage war to protect her ponies, on the basis of few for the many and all. As a brony who has the heart of a chivalrous gent. I would offer my service to either one of the Princesses. That being said, I side right with CC in loving Luna the most. Like her; people (at first glance) would find me intimidating, I have differing social views than that of the "norm" and all I want is for people to see the value I can bring. Also like Luna, I wish to share said value toward those I consider family as well. Being someone with learning disabilities living in a household of HIGHLY capable farmers and workers...you'd see where my ineptitude lies. I understand your position on the matter & agree with you on most every point you've made. However, you said something about how if there was an eternal night, then it's likely that the world as they knew it, would end. My question is, if Luna were to become the sole ruler of Equestria. Like say, if it had been Celestia who'd turned evil & Luna was forced to use the Elements to banish her to the sun, do you think that Luna would be able to learn to raise both the sun & moon to the same extent the Celestia we know was able to? Without giving away too many spoilers, I know that, in the Comics, in 1 of the most recent editions, something happens that makes it impossible for Celestia to raise the sun & thus, it fell upon Luna to do the job for a while. However, Luna is seen struggling to do so on her own. She was able to do it, mind you, but she had difficulties. Anyway, do you think that raising the sun would slowly become easier the more Luna did it & when Celestia 1st banished her sister, do you think that she also had the same difficulties raising the moon for a while? Just food for thought.
