At first, I thought Sunset Shimmer's split-second change from bad to good was a little awkward and random, but now I see why. In the first movie, she was driven by greed and power so much that she was blind to see that there was another way to having a great life. She thought she was deserving of power, but she was wrong. Even after she finally retrieved the crown, gained some evil powers and tried to attack Twilight, she was still no match. She learned that friendship was stronger than her greed and manipulation to power and that's when she finally opened her eyes.

ArreisNevar OR Sunset was using her tactics to survive. Tell your enemies what they want to hear, until you can manipulate them. Telling Twilight she'd changed and only wanted friends played on Twilight's pity and friendship-missionary status, allowing Sunset to survive. Sunset's problem came when she started living the "lie" she'd set up... and discovered she liked friendship. That's why she was hesitant in Rainbow Rocks- she wasn't ready to genuinely admit that she had changed until the end.

Augh, both sides to this argument made my blood boil. One side, that of Loathing's, is the side that loves all the bad and none of the good. He prefers to shut out tons of potential growth for her character, tons of reasonable growth for her character, just because he adores the evil side of her. Canned's position isn't any better. It seems, bad is bland and good is glorious. If I gotta be blunt, it seems a lot of people see new Sunset rather simplistically, just as simplistically as they claim the first film made Sunset. The focus seems to be on how Sunset is sooo nice and relatable, how Sunset is trying to redeem herself, and how timid and adorable she is. To so many of these folks, Sunset Shimmer is essentially a cutsy wootsy shy kind character. GAHHHHH!!! BOTH SIDES IGNORE SO MUCH OF WHO SHE IS! SHE'S A MIX OF BOTH! Yeah, she was a really mean villian in EqG1, but it was a result of Celestia's training. Why did she seem so bland? I DON'T KNOW! But doesn't that intrigue people? I mean Sunset hardly mentioned Celestia throughout EqG1, she had tons of "high school bitch" characteristics, but people have never been curious as to why. They just focus all on the surface and ignore the tremendous character complexity those characteristics bring to Sunset's overall character. Breaking off from Celestia wouldn't automatically make her into a high school bitch. And thanks to the three high school pictures of Sunset winning previous fall formals, we know she's been there for a while. In it she looks to get progressively more corrupt. But no.. She just was always corrupt, she just is this evil evil character. WAY TO SIMPLIFY! With EqG2, it's now the reverse. So many people want to re-contextualize Sunset as just this shy kind character and NOTHING of EqG1 showcases elements of Sunset's personality. HEY! GUYS! LOOK AT THE KITCHEN SCENE IN EQG2! LOOK AT THE SCENE WHERE RARITY NOMINATES TWILIGHT INSTEAD OF SUNSET! Through both those scenes, it's clear Sunset shows a jealousy towards Twilight being looked to for people's problems and she wants to be looked at for solving others problems. SHE WANTS THAT LEADERSHIP/RESPONSIBILITY! SHE WANTS TO HAVE THE POWER TO HELP OTHERS! Buuuuu noooo... noooo.. Sunset wanting leadership and being goal-oriented is a sign of bad Sunset. We no want bad Sunset. We want good Sunset. Her being just shy and kind with nothing else to her personality is better. HEY! BOTH OF YOU! SUNSET IS AWESOME BECAUSE SHE'S GOT BOTH TO HER! SHE'S BEEN A COMPLEX CHARACTER IN EQG1 AND SHE'S AN EVEN MORE NOW BECAUSE OF BOTH EQG1 and EQG2! Both sides merely like good or bad, they don't actually care for the character that is Sunset Shimmer. (I know Loathing was a joke and all, but honestly, both arguments just ticked me off so much.)

thw thing is, noone really cares too much about why she was evil or why she's not celestia's student anymroe cause, frankly, the movie doesn't care either. It ignores pretty much any possibility of ehr backstory just to build her up as a foil to Twilight, but unlike msot good Evil Counterparts the similarities are only briefly mentioned and superficial, and that side of ehr goes nowhere. by the end of the movie, she's no longer a villain anymroe for compeltely contrived reasons just so she cna be redeemed, so by that point why she turned evil no longer matters (not to mention, there are a ton of other backstory elements in the show's myhtology that are far more interesting) I think the mreason people like sunset shimmer more in Rainbow Rocks is partly her woobieness, and partly cause she's mroe of a character who stands out, and her redemption arc is different from discord's cause frankly, discord is still rpetty villainous most of the time anyway. not helping matters is that the only backstory we egt for her is from a comic of questionable canon. (seriosuly people, don't use the comics as basis for arguements)

You let the movie control whether you should question, which is pretty stupid. In you're first paragraph, you talk about how little the movie doesn't care. I'd agree that the movie doesn't care, but that's not what one should set as their marker for curiosity and creativity. People, such as yourself, are looking so much at the meta aspect of, "look there and there and there, the writers don't care a damn, so why should I?" If people took that approach to works, then there'd be a lot less creative works in this world. There is such a thing as someone making something they don't care about and happening to create something that sparks other peoples' curiosity and creativity. I'm arguing that you should base your curiosity and creativity off of what's there. Not, the writers' cares. I also think you make some pretty silly points. The plot didn't show her backstory, but if you actually think on it, you'd get something. It does reveal that she left Celestia. Now, think.. Why would the student of Celestia do that? Hmm.. Sunset seems pretty egotistical throughout the movie. Oh, here's a simple idea that came to me back then. What if Celestia greatly contributed to that ego of Sunset's and was the leading cause for Sunset leaving? (condescending tone) Ohhhh.. that makes a ton of sense. I only wish people thought on that stuff, instead of saying "DIS IS RIDICULOUS. THAT'S NOTHING." and not thinking at all. Second, in what way is Sunset and Twilight's differences and similarities in the first film superficial? That doesn't make a lick of sense and is just an uncritical reason to dislike Sunset in the first film. Ohh, Sunset is the egotistical one, who Celestia didn't watch her ego, and she ended up failing. In addition, she wanted to have control of Equestria. Meanwhile, Twilight is a very humble character, faces confidence issues, and succeed to became a princess of Equestria without wanting the power or knowing what to do with it. Also, Celestia has to stop Twilight from worrying all the time, giving her the self-assurance that everything will end up fine. Meanwhile, Sunset doesn't have an ounce of that problem. She doesn't waver in her conviction. Thanks for saying all these things are superficial, but think again. Sunset was the best foil ever for the series by EqG1 and that only increased by EqG2, Characters such as Trixie are shitty foils in comparison. Lastly, Did Sunset's redemption come out of no where? Yes, that's why I'm curious. That's why you should be curious. Also, my reaction to her being evil would be... NOOOOOO! ARE YOU FREAKING MENTAL?! JUST BECAUSE A CHARACTER WAS REDEEMED DOESN'T MEAN WE SHOULD IGNORE WHY HE OR SHE BECAME ONE! WHERE'S YOUR HISTORICAL CURIOSITY?! Actually the reason I enjoy sunset as a character is because of the second movie where she had to earn everyone's forgiveness, trust and her own redemption which is a refreshing sight to behold considering this is the show where villains who nearly caused the ruin of equestria get forgiven rather easily. Reasons why I love Sunset so much, is I myself have gone through a personal reformation due to the influence of an amazing person I didn't realize I cared for so much, that changed me into a much better person, but that's a looooong story... but I still kept my signature leather jacket. All seriousness aside, it's one of the minor things that made me cling to Sunset. Despite becoming a better person, she still kept the, what would be generally considered, "bad girl" item of clothing.

Look...Cream...I do like Sunset as a reformed villain...but bland? I don't think so. Unlike a lot of MLP villains, she had standards she knew she couldn't cross. She never assaulted someone, just snide remarks and insults. She also likely didn't do the picture thing. She told snips and snails to frame her, so it's more likely they did that. And also with her transformation, she CRIED during the metamorphosis. So while nasty, she was FAR from irredeemable.

A good counter-argument, to me for Sunset's lack of involvement in Rainbow Rocks. She said she didn't say or do anything because due to still becoming accustomed to friendship. She never thought it was her place to get involved with the 6's drama. When you're that uncertain in your abilities, of course you're going to stand aside most of the time. I'm just VERY pleased by how strong Sunset became, throughout the movie. Maybe not as a villain anymore but as a good person

There was once a time I thought of annihilating Sunset Shimmer, but Rainbow Rocks made me see that her 180 change from good to bad was more than just Hasbro's usual "We reform because we don't kill" thing. Sunset as a "protagonist" actually worked for her in the movie and made her more likable and relatable. Now I only wish to annihilate Tirek and The Dazzlings, because I'm a dragon with magic and I can do that if I wanted to.
