Thanks for the breakdown. Ali was supposed to join a panel we held at our film festival last fall, but couldn't due to a film schedule. I guess it was this one! :P Very curious on the film, especially how well it's going to resonate. I would also draw parallell to another film and it was Oliver Stone's "W.", which many people put into their predictions for the Oscars. Controversial president, but a film-maker that has done well at the Academy before, and star cast. It also came out in an election year (2008, although contrary to this film, this was the last year of the Bush presidency since he wasn't going to be elected again). But the film faded away and was forgotten by the time we got to the Oscars. I can imagine this happening to this film, unless Abbasi gives us a slam dunk. Also I just realized, we've followed each other on Letterboxd for years!

This movie is gonna get a crazy amount of attention and be hotly debated whatever its quality (which I believe is going to be great because of the talent involved). For whatever reason, Americans go insane whenever Donald Trump is mentioned, and normal rational conversation is rarely possible (whether it's his worshippers or those who see him as the Antichrist and spend all the time mocking everything about him from his looks to his speech to his kids), the way it is not the case with George W. Bush. for instance.

I'm glad that the title of the episode was misleading and that you did address Abassi's style and previous work. And finally a bit more info on the movie! What you describe is exactly what I expected, that sounds like Abassi.
