This is some amazing footage! I'd love to see your test rig set up! We have lots of pike here in Wisconsin and they are very aggressive in the summer months. They are definitely and canabalistic fish just like large mouth bass. Anything they can fit in their mouths is fair game. I agree as well they will evaluate a competitor and take them out as well regardless of if it's another pike.

Great video and very enjoyable to watch. To me there is only Pike fishing that is interrupted with seasonal forays for Perch. Of all fish the Pike is the Rock N Roll of fishing, swagger, attitude and always ready to rumble if you annoy it enough.

Great observation. If there were no weights on the front of the lures like you had them ,they would have had better action. If a lure has more action then the other then I think the lure with the better action would be struck first. But with your experiment they both had not much wobble in the lures. It was very interesting . Thank you for the video. Cheers from Canada.

Great video. Thanks for the translation. I get alot more pike on my local canal than every other fisherman. I use the fox replicant pike soft lures. They love to smash into its head. So much I had to put a hook on to catch them as they never swallowed it. Just a hit and run on the gills.

The pike seem to not attack the lure pike if the lure pike was behind the other lure, when the lures were side by side the real pike would attack the pike lure almost like saying "you look like friends and that is not allowed" just a coincidence but strange no the less. Great video.
@andyoreilly69194 жыл бұрын
Very interesting video. The 2 most popular lures seemed to be the pike and the trout, I wonder if when they strike the pike lure it is triggering a territorial response and the trout strikes are more of a feeding response due to that species hi fat/ caloric density. It reminded me of sharks that target hi fat species (seals) yet seem un-interested in other seemingly easier species to catch. The underwater film quality is great.

I would say that this was a very interesting video, informative as well. I truly enjoyed it. It was great watching the pike attack the lures in slow motion. Most interesting was how quickly they could determine the lures were not the soft bodies of real fish. I just watched your video for the first time. You did a great job and will be watching more of your videos. And yes pike are territorial, seeing as where there live is a narrow canal is not surprising they're all relatively the same size. I'm more surprised as how many you came across w your lures. Keep up the good work.... I understand this was four years ago and have yet to watch any of your other content. But none the less!, If you're still alive, good work ol chap.

We've found that bigger lures attract bigger pike. But to catch them you fish close to the prop wash the motor attacks them. If your after smaller pike use smaller lures a fish 100' or so behind the boat. The prop noise seems to spook them.

On a few different locations mostly in the Grand Canal but it was in 2015! You won't find those pike now :)
It looks like Mr Pike preferred Tommy the trout to some extent. I fly fish pike and I have a theory that blue, white and silver coloration initiate strikes vs the olive and brown more natural fish coloration. Pike and musky when observed near the surface on a sunny day in fact appear blue and white maybe because of light refraction or something but regardless I think color has a lot to do with pike strikes vs shape of the bait. I agree size has a lot to do with strikes as well but I'm not sure if they specifically target other pike. It could be they're predisposed to striking more slender baitfish like trout and other pike vs more "rounder" fish like perch and carp species. A very interesting experiment. Thanks for the cool video!

Your videos seem to show that they definately prefer a good trout dinner over a competitor. But the rest of the time, they were taking out future competition. It's interesting how much they examine the bait before making their decision to strike. One seemed very curious as to what the bait pike 'Mike' was chasing and should he go after the clicking thing Mike was chasing. I would like to see some video where 'Mike' suddenly sees his attacker and 'tries' to escspe.

I like to know about the paper clips on the lure the color difference were some silver uncoated I have a feeling this test shows either the color of the paper clips or the vibrations of the clips has as much to do with the striking then the choose of the lure. Pike here in Wisconsin are like sharks, eating anything they can grab. Ducks, fish, turtles, frogs, etc... I prefer live bait, especially where there is fishing pressure. I have pulled several pike at a time from a spot that gets hammered by fishermen daily using artificials. There are stories of local muskies ambushing squirrels by putting acorns on an emergent stump a few feet from shore and waiting for the squirrels to jump to the stump. I have heard the same story from multiple fishermen who did not know each other. I also know that chipmunks and small squirrels make awesome bait. ; )

i think they are genuine cannibals. I don't think that there is a clear reason for the pike to attack other pike, it's just beneficial in both ways - consuming and eliminating rivals at the same time. Why wouldn't natural selection reward such a behaviour? I think that for the pike itself, it don't understand the difference between cousin and baitfish. As long as it behaves like food it is food and the pike attacks on instinct.

Interesting footage and opinions. The real pike predators may appear to be "thick-heads", but are not stupid. Many appeared to pursue the lures but back off without attacking. They seemed to sense the lure was artificial. Have you or anybody tried adding scent of real fish to these lures? Rubbing the lure in fish oil, or similar?

It also looked like "Mike the Pike" had some 'paper clips' hanging on the underside that were clicking and attracting their attention. It almost looked like they were curious about the clips and not interested about the potential food after noticing the clips. It definitely looked as if they would attack the bait, until they noticed the clips and became curious about the clips. But, I've noticed that all fish are cannibalistic. Big fish will eat smaller fish. They have a very simple attitude about life. "Can I eat it or will it eat me?" I once saw a big Flathead Catfish (over 30 inches) with a Big Blue Catfish hanging out of it's mouth. The big Blue was only about 3 inches shorter than the Flathead. Personally, I don't know how he kept from choking.

The only thing I've noticed is that big pike prefer big lures. I've fished with live pike, perch and roach as bait and all attract strikes but size seem to be a big factor. I've seen a 2 kg pike attack a hooked 1 kg pike and I'm not sure if it's because of eliminating competition or just attacking something that behave in a distressed manner.

First we caught a Pike of 110 cm on a jig and released the fish. Two weaks later we retourned to the spot. We tried everything for half an hour but we didn´t caught anything. Then we chose a small 10 cm Pike wobbler and on the very first cast we hooked the same pike and identified him on fotos afterwards. I think, it speaks for itself.
