Great video, one little tip if you find you have extra space in a pressure canner stick in a couple ( or even one) pint jars filled with water. The sterilised water is great for emergency wound and eye cleaning for first aid or even just emergency pints in your pantry shelves in event of local disruption. ❤

An idea, strain broth from soup, put veggies and chicken in jars then fill with broth. Might be less messy. And would keep all of the jars consistent. Love your channel and how professional you are. ❤🌹❤️

From personal experience, when done, don't move the hot canner off the warm burner to another cold burner, especially on a glass top stove. You will have siphoning due to fast temperature change.

We raised meat chickens for the first time last year. I don’t think we’ll switch back to grocery store chicken as long as we are able to raise our own. Of course the hardest hurdle is the actual “dispatching”, but I try to keep in mind that our chickens had a better life than the commercially raised chickens. Good luck with yours!!

Can you pre measure each ingredient so that each jar basically has the same amount of each ingredient?
@abbeyverigin
@abbeyverigin Жыл бұрын
You’d still want those vegetables to be partially cooked and hot if following best canning practice. Raw vegetables will be denser which can impact heat penetration while canning. Soup recipes are tested based on hot packing, so if you were to cold pack the ingredients you’d be diverging from the tested recipe. After cooking you could ladle the solids into jars to try to get an even measurement and then add the remaining broth. Hope that makes sense!

I just ordered this same pressure canner!!! What is your preferred method to preserve carrots....vacuum sealed frozen or canned? Did you add any seasonings to the soup?

If I can meat/poultry and don't have enough jars to fill the canner and I have extra broth I usually make up the difference with dried beans and the extra broth. The beans and meat need the same time, and believe me, once you have tasted beans cooked with broth of any sort (wait till you try onion broth) you will never go back to plain beans.
@abbeyverigin
@abbeyverigin Жыл бұрын
I often do the same! I haven’t tried canning beans in broth though - will definitely try that next time around!

Love the look of your broth. When you put back in instapot, what all do you put in besides bones and water? And how long do you cook it? Just found your channel. Very impressed. Keep up good work!
@abbeyverigin
@abbeyverigin Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Often I do just the bones and water. I’ll keep a scrap bag in the freezer of onion, carrot and celery ends and add that in as well sometimes. I don’t salt mine until I’m using it. Then just top up to the max line in the instant pot and high pressure for 4 hours. Turns out great every time :)

Started canning last summer, and I am not a fan of the Ball canned meats recipes. Everything else is excellent, but the Herbed Chicken, as one example, was tasteless and stringy. Does your par cooking method for the chicken produce flavorful meat that doesn't require a good set of molars to chew? BTW your videos are really good and thanks for including recipe sources.
@abbeyverigin
@abbeyverigin Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I haven’t tried the Herbed Chicken recipe. We have found all the meat we have canned to be flavorful and tender. Flavor could just be our homemade broth we use and seasoning. I’d say raw pack makes for even more tender meat. If I par cook my chicken it’s just for ease, but we don’t find it to be tough at all. I’d be interested to know if you’ve tried raw packing? I posted a video with meal in a jar recipes and both the chicken and beef are incredibly flavorful and very tender.

favorite meals in a jar: raw pork in bbcue sauce you then just open and shred and put on buns later. Chili, beef stew and loaded baked potato soup.

Beef stew is a favorite of ours as well. Really looking forward to trying the pork once we get ours back from the butcher. Do you have a favorite recipe for the loaded baked potato soup? That’s on my to try list as well

The potato soup recipe is from Carolyn Thomas from "The Homesteading Family" in Idaho. I took her canning course many years ago and it was a recipe included in that course. She may have it on her blog. You could try and google it.

Did you defrost the whole chicken before putting it in the insta pot?
@abbeyverigin
@abbeyverigin Жыл бұрын
You can do either. 6 mins per pound for fresh or 13 mins per pound from frozen. Both with 15 min natural release

Hi - new subscriber here. How long do you cook your chicken in the Instapot? Is it fully cooked? Thank you.
@abbeyverigin
@abbeyverigin Жыл бұрын
Hello! I will cook in about 2/3 way through. For fully cooked chicken in the instant pot it’s about 6 minutes per pound for a thawed chicken or 13 minutes per pound for a frozen chicken. I’ll cook closer to 4-5 minutes per pound. 15 minute natural release either way :)
